The Night Stars That Went Dark
The Last Light of Avinmore Preface There are stories born from light, and there are stories born from darkness. The Last Light of Avinmore is a tale about fear, hope, sacrifice, and the courage to stand when the world begins to fall apart. At its heart lies a question that has followed humanity for centuries: What happens when the light we depend on begins to disappear? In the kingdom of Avenmoor, the stars are more than distant lights in the sky — they are symbols of balance, memory, and life itself. Chapter 1 The Night the Stars Went Dark The village of Brier Glen had always been quiet. At sunset, smoke curled from stone chimneys while lanterns glowed softly beside narrow dirt roads. Farmers returned from the fields with tired shoulders, children laughed beside the riverbank, and the old bell tower echoed across the valley every evening before supper. But on the night the stars disappeared, the bell never rang. Elias Thorn stood alone on the hill beyond the village fences, staring at the sky. The wind moved gently through the tall grass around him, carrying the scent of rain and pine trees from the northern forest. He pulled his worn brown cloak tighter around his shoulders and looked upward. Something was wrong. For weeks, the stars had seemed dimmer. At first, nobody cared. The older villagers blamed clouds. Others claimed it was only winter approaching early. But Elias noticed things others ignored. He noticed the silence in the woods. He noticed how animals stopped wandering near the river after sunset. He noticed the cold. Every night, the air grew sharper, stranger, heavier. And tonight, for the first time in his life, fear crawled into his chest as he watched one of the stars vanish completely. Not fade. Disappear. The light blinked once and then dissolved into darkness. Elias stepped backward. “No...” he whispered. Another star flickered. Gone. His breathing quickened. The entire sky seemed to tremble. Far away, thunder rolled across the mountains. Then came the scream. It echoed from the forest below the hill. A terrible sound. Not human. Not animal. Something in between. Elias grabbed the lantern hanging from his belt and hurried down the path toward Briar Glen. His boots slipped against wet stones while branches scratched at his sleeves. The scream came again. Closer this time. The trees moved. Elias froze. Two pale eyes stared at him from the darkness. Then four more. Then dozens. Shapes crawled between the trees. Tall creatures with twisted limbs and skin like cracked ash. Their mouths opened too wide. Their fingers dragged across the ground like claws. Elias stumbled backward. The lantern dropped from his hands and shattered against the stones. Darkness swallowed the path. The creatures rushed forward. Elias tried to run. One of the creatures lunged toward him. Then a silver blur exploded from the trees. A massive wolf crashed into the creature and sent it flying into the undergrowth. The wolf growled fiercely. Its fur shimmered beneath the moonlight. Its eyes glowed blue. The creatures hissed and retreated into the shadows. The wolf turned toward Elias. For a moment, neither moved. Then the wolf walked closer. Elias could barely breathe. The animal was enormous. Its silver fur moved like flowing water. A strange symbol glowed faintly across its forehead. The wolf stared directly into Elias’s eyes. And somehow, impossibly, Elias understood. Run. The creatures screamed again. The wolf spun toward the trees. Elias ran. He sprinted down the hill toward Briar Glen while thunder shook the sky overhead. When he finally reached the village gates, people were already gathering in panic. “What happened?” shouted a blacksmith. “Something’s in the woods!” cried another villager. Children screamed. Dogs barked wildly. Elias pushed through the crowd, gasping for breath. “The forest...” he said. “There are creatures in the forest.” Some villagers laughed nervously. Others exchanged frightened glances. Old Mara, the village herbalist, stepped forward slowly. Her cloudy eyes narrowed. “Did you see the sky?” she asked. Elias nodded. Her face turned pale. “The darkness has begun.” A silence fell across the crowd. Then the ground shook. A loud crash echoed from the edge of the village. The creatures burst from the forest. Chaos erupted instantly. People ran in every direction. One creature leaped onto a wagon and tore through the wood with monstrous strength. Another smashed through a fence. Elias grabbed a fallen torch from the mud. Fear screamed through his body. But he could not run. Not while the village burned. He charged toward the nearest creature. The monster turned. Its pale face twisted into a grin. Elias swung the torch. Flames struck the creature’s shoulder. It shrieked and stumbled backward. Villagers rushed to safety. Another creature lunged from behind. Before Elias could react, the silver wolf appeared again. It slammed into the creature with terrifying force. The battle spread across the village square. Torches lit the darkness. Smoke rose into the air. The stars above continued disappearing one by one. Elias looked skyward. Only a few lights remained. Then he saw it. Far above the mountains. A glowing c***k splitting the sky. Blue light spilled through it like fire. Everyone stopped. Even the creatures froze. The c***k widened slowly. A deep voice echoed across the valley. “The gate has opened.” The sound shook the earth itself. The creatures fled instantly into the woods. The c***k vanished. Silence returned. Smoke drifted through Brier Glen. Elias stared at the sky, unable to move. Old Mara approached him carefully. “The stories were true,” she whispered. “What stories?” Elias asked. But the old woman only looked toward the northern mountains. Toward the darkness waiting beyond them. And for the first time in centuries, the kingdom of Avenmoor began to remember its forgotten fear. End of Chapter 1
