The sea was her refuge. Every morning, Darcy Luezaga ran barefoot along the shoreline, her laughter carried by the wind. The waves seemed to answer her, rising and falling in rhythm with her joy.
βDarcy, anak, bilisan mo,β her motherβs voice called from the simple little house near the shore.
Darcy slowed, smiling. βMa, ang sarap sa pakiramdam. I feel like Iβm flying.β
Her mother, Althea, stepped out with a basket in her arms. βOo, anak. Pero tandaan mo, hindi lang kalayaan ang mahalaga. Huwag kang matakot sa pag-ibig.β
Darcyβs smile faded. βPag-ibig? Ma, I saw what it did to you. I donβt want that cage.β
Althea sighed, brushing her daughterβs hair back. βHindi lahat ng pag-ibig ay kulungan. May pag-ibig na nagpapalaya.β
Darcy turned to the horizon, her voice firm. βFor me, the sea is enough. I donβt need love.β
Her childhood memories were darker than the waves at night. She remembered her fatherβs voice, sharp and cruel.
βAlthea!β Daniel Luezaga would roar, slamming his fist on the table. "If you love me you will be only loyal to me". You must obey.β
Darcy, small and trembling, hid under her blanket. βMa, tama naβ¦β she whispered.
One night, her mother whispered back, βDarcy, aalis tayo.β
They fled under the moonlight, running until the ocean appeared before them. Darcy stood barefoot on the sand, heart pounding. βMa, malaya na tayo.β
Her motherβs tears fell. βOo, anak. Malaya na.β

Years passed, and Darcy became the spirit of the town. At the market, Mang Tomas waved. βDarcy! Hahabulin mo ang alon!?β
She laughed. βMang Tomas, baka naunahan ko na.β
Aling Rosa, arranging mangoes, called out, βAng saya ng ngiti mo, Darcy.β
βSalamat po, Aling Rosa,β she replied. βKailangan po kasi, para dumami ang suki.β
Her mother shook her head.
Darcy fell silent, her vow echoing: Hindi ako magpapaalipin sa pag-ibig.

One afternoon, a letter arrived. Darcy opened it, hands trembling.
βMaβ¦ nakapasok ako sa Celestia University. Full scholarship.β
Altheaβs tears brimmed. βAnak, ito na ang pagkakataon mo.β
Darcy hesitated. βPero Ma, ang layo ng Maynila. What about you? What about the sea?β
Her mother held her face. βDarcy, huwag kang matakot. Ang kalayaan, hindi lang dito. Nasa mga pagkakataon din.β
That night, Darcy stood at the shore, clutching the letter. βBabalik ako, dagat. Pero kailangan kong makita kung ano ang naghihintay sa akin sa mundong iyon.β
Darcyβs life was shaped by the sea, by freedom, and by a vow never to let love cage her. Yet destiny, like the tide, was already moving toward her, waiting for the moment when her heart would be tested.
