NATALIA
“Who’s that omega anyway? She’s troubling everyone.” Ivy asked while busy curling her hair, not even bothering to glance at me.
I was surprised by her remark. It was normal to ask about Lorelei, but to call her a nuisance when she knew that the woman was brought here in a critical condition… it isn’t like Ivy at all.
“Hello? Earth to Natalia?”
My shoulders jumped a bit, startled when she called me. I slightly shook my head off my thoughts. I might be overthinking again, but this is concerning.
“We’re not sure yet. She’s still unconscious at the moment. Hopefully, she’d get through it.” I answered a second later.
Ivy clicked her tongue and did the final touches to her hair before she got up and faced me. “Omegas are just so weak, aren’t they?”
“Ivy, it isn’t their fault that they are weaker than the rest of us. Besides, she was tortured by hunters. Nothing is right with that.” I never thought there would come a time when I would defend Lorelei, but Ivy’s words rang in my ears. Omegas have been ostracized by their packs because they don’t conform to what was expected of everyone, but it was never their fault their connections with their wolves are weaker. It’s not something that could easily be honed, either. Even alphas are struggling to do that.
I was already so conflicted by the changes to the future I knew and by the changes to people’s attitudes and positions about things. I don’t want my only friend to change, too.
She raised her hands as if surrendering. “Okay, sorry. My bad. I’m just bummed out because the pack gathering was canceled. I was looking forward to that in weeks. I didn’t mean what I said.”
I approached Ivy and patted her shoulder. “It’ll be resumed once everything is safe again. I promise.”
Tristan decided to postpone the pack gathering that was supposed to happen tonight with another three packs. He said it was for safety reasons, and the rest of the pack alphas agreed. With someone attacked brutally, there is an increased risk that hunters will strike again. It was true and more serious than he let on, but I knew that another reason was so he could focus on Lorelei.
She pursed her lips, “I know, I know. I apologize, Luna.”
I chuckled at how she rolled her tongue, calling me Luna. I playfully smacked her. “Why does it sound like a tease coming from you?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Luna Natalia.” She blatantly denied it before laughing loudly.
We ended up laughing to ourselves. I miss these kinds of moments. We couldn’t talk that frequently after my wedding as I was busy dealing with my duties, and Ivy became busy with other things.
“By the way, you said you’ll say something important to me. What is it?” She glanced at the mirror and fixed her dress while waiting for me to respond. Enough time for me to think of an excuse.
I smiled at her when she turned to me. “I already told you. The pack gathering you’ve been looking forward to will resume soon. I know you’d sulk because you’ve been looking forward to it, so I went here to tell you that it’s going to get resumed, just not now.” I was basically rambling but managed to say something believable… or at least I hope it was.
Ivy’s forehead crumpled, looking at me with obvious suspicion. Of course, she knew me too well. “You’re hiding something.”
My eyes shifted in a slight panic. Ivy has always been like my sister, more than my real siblings, who either hated me or barely acknowledged my existence. I tell her everything, things I’d never tell to anyone, and the fact that I’m hiding such a huge secret from her only adds to this gnawing feeling I had since I went back in time. But after a long thought, I realized that so many things could happen if I told her, especially since I wasn’t so certain about it anymore.
I don’t think I could easily tell her that, in my memories, her brother died, and she let me fall off to my death.
“Okay, the truth is the threat seemed to be more serious than what we’re letting on. The hunters are on the rise again, so the postponing of the gathering is a really huge precaution. What happened to that girl could happen again.” I answered, circling back to our original topic.
I saw worry in her eyes, her shoulders dropping in realization. “Hunters are so annoying. We have enough problems with rogues as it is.”
Before I could respond, I heard a doorbell outside. I immediately sensed that it was Tristan. He said he’d pick me up after a business meeting. I honestly didn’t expect much, but he was even early.
“I’ll go get it.” Ivy rushed out, suddenly so excited about Tristan’s arrival.
I followed out. Alpha Tristan just stepped inside when I saw them. My lips curled into a smile, still surprised by his efforts despite being very busy. But the small happiness I felt faltered in an instant when I noticed Ivy’s reaction. Her back was straightened, her chest subtly pushed forward, and she was smiling like I’d never seen her before.
“Alpha,” Ivy greeted. Her voice was a pitch higher while her eyes were almost gleaming. “You look nice today,” she added, tucking one side of her hair into her ear.
“Thanks, you too.” Tristan simply smiled at her, though I could feel him also a bit confused by how she acted.
Tristan’s eyes darted at me, and his expression brightened in an instant. His attention was solely on me, but I couldn’t get past how Ivy reacted. There was something different about it. Something disturbing.
I blinked fast while scolding myself internally. I can’t let paranoia eat me alive. Ivy is my best friend. She wouldn’t do that to me.
“Ready to go, Talia?”
Tristan’s question snapped me back to reality. I nodded before turning to Ivy. “Be careful on your way. I’ll see you soon.”
She waved us off, smiling but looked discontented for some reason, “Yeah, yeah, see you soon. Simon is already on his way, too.”
We left her place with Tristan holding my hand until we reached his car.
“How about we grab lunch before going home?” he suddenly suggested. “Maybe even catch a movie?”
My mind blanked out for a second. He’s casually asking me for a date. I don’t remember him ever doing that before, even though we had already become comfortable with each other.
“I’d love that.” I answered shortly, “Thank you for making time for me.”
He let out a small sigh, “I know I’ve been very busy lately, but I really want to make it up to you. I already cleared my schedule today so we could have uninterrupted time—just you and me.”
I felt my heart skipped a beat with his remark. It could have been a dream come true if I hadn’t known the truth.
I was about to respond when the sound of his phone rang. At first, he ignored it, but the ringing continued.
He let out an exhausted sigh, “I shouldn’t have jinxed it.”
Tristan took his phone out of his pocket and answered the call without checking who it was. “I already told you I don’t want to be interrupted. What is it?”
The exhaustion in his eyes was quickly replaced with hope and relief.
“She’s awake?”
