Cain Voss arrived at eleven in the morning. Selene heard the vehicles from the library. She had been at her usual table since seven, working through the final volume of the Ironmoon pack histories with the focused attention of someone using study as both preparation and grounding, and when the sound of engines came through the south window she did not immediately look up. She finished the paragraph she was reading, noted the page, closed the volume, and then stood and walked to the window. Two black vehicles in the courtyard below.
