Prologue: The Encounter
It is a blissful night in New York City. Everybody in the pub is partying, enjoying the upbeat music, dancing their hearts out. A not so ideal place to meet the person you would love for the rest of your life. But when the love of your life comes along, to hell with the place and time.
"So, Iris? Are you going back to the Philippines first thing tomorrow?" Chen asked her in a loud voice, while dancing.
"What?" she shouted as response.
"I said, will you go back to the Philippines tomorrow morning?" Chen asked again in a loud voice.
"Let us just dance!" Iris' answer then she shouted after. She kept on shouting as she was moving into the center of the dance floor.
As she was approaching, she bumped into a man.
"Ouch!" she reacted with much exaggeration.
"Oh, I am sorry! I didn't mean it." his apologetic response.
"Hmmmph! Whatever!" her snobbish reply then she started leaving the dance floor to go to her friends.
"You're done dancing, Iris?" it's Young, one of her friends.
"Not really," she irritatingly responded. "Somoene just simply ruined the mood."
"Poor you," Chen commented, then started getting liquor to drink.
"Where are the others?" she asked the two after noticing that her other friends are not around.
"Fetching some hot guys out there!" Chen answered her and laughed after.
"Speaking of the wenches!" Young shouted maniacally when she noticed that the girls are going their way, with some guys.
"Yeah, wench! We're here!" Mary acknowledged her friend, then they all laughed.
"By the way, we met some cool dudes here.
"Yeah, that is us!" Jerry, one of the guys, seconded the motion.
"And we all have a guy of our own for tonight!" Tamarah exclaimed, then almost all of them shouted with joy.
"Mary, my baby, who among these beautiful friends of yours is the Filipina lady?" George asked her.
"Oh, yeah! I almost forgot, baby!" As soon as Iris knew that it was her, she looked at her friend with ire but she still kept on calling her.
"Iris, don't be such a baby!" Chen teased her.
"Yes, Girl." Gayoung seconded the motion, then the two of them stood up from the couch and brought Iris to the guys.
"Hey!" Iris' response with aggravated ire.
"What's with the Filipina thing, gentlemen?" Chen asked them.
"Iris?" Jerry's attempt to confirm her name.
"Yes, that is her!" Chen's enthusiastic introduction to her.
"I want you to meet..." then she pulled one of the guys who went with them to show Iris. "....Bernard. Your match for tonight, a Pinoy hottie."
Iris was caught in shock. This Bernard that her friend is introducing to her is the man she bumped into just minutes ago.
"Wow, I knew it. You are also from the Philippines." he exclaimed with pleasant surprise.
"And so?" her snobbish response to the man. "Aray! (Ouch! in Filipino language)" she shouted as Young pinched her by the side of her stomach.
"Iris," her intro with her eyes going big, "it's your time to shine."
"What! No!" her refusal with exaggeration.
"Why not?" George shoutingly asked her. "This is supposed to be your night. And you all ladies deserve a blast for tonight." And then they all shouted with joy, except Iris and Bernard.
"H-happy graduation!" Bernard to Iris.
"Thank you!" Iris to Bernard.
Aside from the two of them, everyone enjoys the company of each other as they go on flirting. Iris and Bernard on the other hand though.....
"Come on, you're still mad about what happened?" but Iris never responded, and just looked away instead.
"What can I do then to make it up to you? Tell me." Bernard sincerely stated. "Okay. Let us just put it this way, since this is your night, you really deserve to have a blast."
"No!" Iris shouted.
"Hey, not that kind of blast, okay? It's not what you think. I am not that kind of guy. I swear."
Iris started looking at him after hearing the assuring statement from him. Her ire started to rapidly subside. Because of that, she noticed his face's good features, as the pub's lights go on and off at them; sharp nose, little yet dark brown, expressive eyes, the not so thick and not so big yet kissable lips. It suddenly seems that she could not see no one else but him.
"Hey!" Bernard as he snapped his finger on Iris, which startled her. "Well," chuckles shortly, "....I am not that type of guy, unless you want me to," then smirks.
"Excuse me?" Iris teased him.
"Yes, Iris?" his response with a smirk again.
"You're too full of yourself, aren't you?"
"Not at all," his answer to her question. "It's just that, I do not have to force a woman to have s*x with me."
"Huh, wow!" her sarcastic yet giddy response.
"Let us change the topic. I don't want you to think I am conceited, which I am really not, I believe. As I said, I am not that type of guy."
Silence came upon the two of them despite the loud noise of everyone in the pub, let alone the deafening music playing. But it is just Iris and Bernard there, staring at each other, not hearing anything but the beat of their hearts.
