Episode 1: The Man Behind the Glass
Rain had been falling since dawn. Elena Brooks stood beneath the narrow roof of a crowded bus stop, clutching a worn black folder against her chest. Water dripped from the edge of the shelter, while cars moved slowly through the wet streets. Inside the folder were her résumé, certificates, employment references, and one photograph she carried everywhere. Her mother. Elena pulled the photograph out. Her mother was smiling brightly, one hand resting on Elena's shoulder. It had been taken years ago, before illness had slowly taken away the woman who had raised her. Elena touched the photograph gently. "I wish you were here, Mom." Six months had passed since her mother's death. Six months since Elena had watched the strongest woman she knew become weaker every day. Her mother had never given Elena wealth. She had given her something more valuable. Strength. Now Elena needed to use it. Her savings were almost gone. Her rent was due in five days, and she had been rejected from several jobs already. Today's interview had to be different. She couldn't afford another rejection. A bus finally appeared through the rain. Elena put the photograph away and stepped aboard. --- Forty minutes later, she stood in front of an enormous glass building. SINCLAIR HOLDINGS. The company's name was displayed in polished silver letters above the entrance. Elena looked up. Everyone knew Sinclair Holdings. It was one of the most powerful corporations in the country, controlled by the Sinclair family for generations. And its current CEO was Alexander Sinclair. Twenty-nine years old. Extremely wealthy. Brilliant. Cold. The newspapers often described him as ruthless in business. Elena took a deep breath. "Don't be intimidated." She straightened her blouse. "You're here for a job." Then she walked inside. The lobby was enormous. Marble floors reflected the bright lights overhead. Employees in expensive suits hurried between offices while security guards watched the entrance. Elena approached the reception desk. "Good morning. I'm here for an interview." The receptionist looked up. "Name?" "Elena Brooks." The woman typed something. "Human Resources. Thirty-second floor." "Thank you." Elena turned toward the elevators. Before she could reach them, someone suddenly collided with her. Her folder fell. Papers scattered across the marble floor. "Oh, I'm sorry." Elena immediately knelt down. "It's okay." She reached for her résumé. Another hand reached for it at the same time. Their fingers touched. Elena looked up. A tall man stood in front of her. Dark hair. Sharp features. Cold gray eyes. Perfect black suit. He looked like someone who had never been told no. The man picked up her résumé. "Elena Brooks." She stood. "Yes." "You're interviewing today?" "Yes." He handed the paper back. "Good luck." Then he walked toward a private elevator. Elena watched him. "Who was that?" The receptionist looked surprised. "You don't know?" "No." "That was Alexander Sinclair." Elena's eyes widened. "The CEO?" The receptionist nodded. Elena looked toward the elevator. "Wonderful." She closed her eyes briefly. I just dropped my résumé in front of the CEO. --- Thirty minutes later, Elena sat in the Human Resources office. Three interviewers sat across from her. One looked at her résumé. "Why do you want to work for Sinclair Holdings?" "Because I believe I can contribute to the company." "Your résumé shows several different jobs." "Yes." "Why?" Elena paused. "Because I needed to support my mother." The room became quiet. "She passed away six months ago." "I'm sorry." "Thank you." Elena took a breath. "After she died, I realized I couldn't keep moving from one temporary job to another. I want stability. I want to build something for myself." The interviewer smiled. "That's admirable." The door opened. Everyone stood. Alexander Sinclair walked in. Elena's stomach tightened. He looked at the interviewers. "Leave us." One interviewer hesitated. "But, Mr. Sinclair—" "Please." They gathered their papers and left. The door closed. Alexander sat across from Elena. He picked up her résumé. "I read this." "Is that good or bad?" "You have an unusual employment history." "I've had an unusual life." His eyes lifted. "Why Sinclair Holdings?" "I already answered that." "I want the real answer." Elena frowned. "I need a job." "Everyone needs a job." "I need this one." "Why?" She hesitated. Then she looked directly at him. "Because I refuse to let my mother's death become the end of my life." Alexander became silent. Something about her answer affected him. He lowered the résumé. "You're hired." Elena blinked. "What?" "Executive assistant." "To whom?" "Me." She stared at him. "You?" "Do you have a problem with that?" "No." "Good." He stood. "Report to my office at eight tomorrow morning." Elena stood. "Thank you, Mr. Sinclair." Alexander looked at her. Their eyes met. For a moment, the room felt strangely quiet. Then he walked away. Elena watched him leave. She had gotten the job. But instead of relief, she felt something she couldn't explain. A warning. --- That evening, Elena returned to her apartment. She placed the employment papers on the table. Then she took out her mother's photograph. "Mom..." She smiled sadly. "I got a job." Elena turned the photograph over. She froze. There was a handwritten sentence on the back. If anything happens to me, never trust the Sinclair family. Elena stared at the words. She had seen them before. But now they felt different. Why had her mother written that? Then Elena remembered something. During the final weeks of her mother's life, she had repeatedly whispered a name. Richard Sinclair. Alexander's father. Elena's fingers tightened around the photograph. "Why did you tell me not to trust them?" She had no answer. --- Across the city, Alexander stood in his office overlooking the skyline. His closest friend and business partner, Ryan Anderson, entered carrying a file. "You hired her?" Alexander didn't answer. Ryan placed the file on the desk. "You know who she is?" Alexander turned. "I know exactly who she is." Ryan's expression changed. "You mean..." Alexander opened the file. Inside was an old photograph. A much younger Richard Sinclair stood beside a woman. Elena's mother. Ryan stared at it. "That's impossible." "That's what I thought." Alexander closed the file. "But I've found enough evidence to prove they knew each other." Ryan looked concerned. "What are you going to do?" "Find out why Elena's mother disappeared from my father's life twenty-five years ago." "And Elena?" Alexander looked toward the window. "She may be the only person who can lead me to the truth." --- The next morning, Elena arrived at Sinclair Holdings at exactly 7:55. Alexander was already in his office. "You're early." "You said eight." "It's seven fifty-five." "Then I'm early." He handed her a tablet. "Your schedule." She looked at it. "That's a lot." "You're my assistant." "I understand." "Meetings, calls, appointments, contracts. Nothing gets missed." Elena nodded. "I can handle it." "I hope so." She looked at him. "Do you always doubt people this much?" "Do you always question your employer?" "Only when he doubts me before I've done anything wrong." For the first time, Alexander almost smiled. "Coffee." She blinked. "Excuse me?" "Black. No sugar." "Anything else?" "One for yourself." "Why?" "Because we're going to be working together." Elena shook her head. "You're strange." "So I've been told." She walked away. Alexander watched her. He didn't understand why he had hired her. Or why he was already curious about her. --- Later that morning, Elena was organizing documents when she noticed a familiar name. Richard Sinclair. Her fingers froze. It was an old acquisition record. She read the page. Then she saw another name. Margaret Brooks. Her mother. Elena's heart stopped. She quickly photographed the document. "What are you doing?" She nearly dropped her phone. Alexander stood behind her. "I saw my mother's name." His expression changed. "Your mother?" "Yes." He took the document. "How do you know this is her signature?" "Because I grew up seeing it." Alexander stared at the page. "Did she ever tell you she worked with my father?" "No." "Did she mention him?" Elena hesitated. "Yes." "What did she say?" "She told me never to trust your family." Alexander's face hardened. "When?" "Before she died." He looked away. For the first time, Elena saw pain behind his cold expression. "You knew something." "I knew my father knew your mother." "That's all?" "That's all I knew." Elena wasn't convinced. Before she could ask more, Alexander's phone rang. He answered. "Yes?" Ryan's voice came through. Alexander's expression changed. "I'll be there." He ended the call. Elena looked at him. "What happened?" "Ryan found something at the old Sinclair estate." "What?" "I don't know." "I'm coming." "No." "My family is involved." Alexander stared at her. Then finally nodded. "Fine." --- That evening, they arrived at the old Sinclair estate. Ryan was waiting near the entrance. "What did you find?" Ryan handed Alexander a folder. "These were hidden in a storage room." Alexander opened it. Letters. Photographs. Documents. Then he found a handwritten note. He read it silently. His expression changed. Elena stepped closer. "What does it say?" Alexander handed her the note. She read: Margaret and I have agreed that Elena must never know the truth about her father. Elena's hands began to tremble. "My father?" Alexander looked at her. "I don't know." A photograph slipped from the folder. Elena picked it up. Her mother stood beside Richard Sinclair. They looked strangely happy. On the back was a date. August 14, 2001. Elena stared at it. "This is the same date." Alexander nodded. "The night everything changed." Suddenly, they heard a car engine. They turned toward the window. A black car was parked across the street. Someone was watching them. Alexander immediately stepped in front of Elena. "Stay here." He ran outside. The car drove away. He returned moments later. "Who was it?" Elena asked. "I don't know." She looked down at the photograph. Then noticed another sentence written beneath the date. The truth is closer than you think. Elena looked at Alexander. "What does that mean?" He stared at the photograph. "I don't know." But deep inside, Alexander knew something had changed. Elena Brooks was no longer simply his new assistant. She was connected to the biggest secret his family had ever hidden. And the closer they came to the truth, the more dangerous their lives would become. Neither of them knew what was waiting ahead. Neither knew that their families' secrets would eventually bring them closer together. And neither knew that somewhere between suspicion, danger, and unanswered questions, something far more powerful had already begun. Something neither of them had planned. Love.
