Blurb

Dying in the gutter, Susan watched her protegé Julie flash a wedding video on a diamond-encrusted phone.

Her ex-fiancé David kissed  his  bride beneath castle spires—both decked in fortunes *she’d* paid for. The same girl Susan had starved to educate.

“*Pathetic,*” Julie giggled through her silk mask, nudging Susan’s emaciated body with a designer heel. “Should’ve died faster. We needed your trust fund *last month.*”

Blood bubbled at Susan’s lips. Eight years of sacrifice. Stolen money. Stolen love. Stolen life.

This wasn’t betrayal.

*This was murder.*

Chapter 1 Betrayal
Susan Bennett lay on the ground, waiting for death, as Julie Carter played a lavish wedding video right in front of her. The newlyweds stood at the entrance of a grand castle, greeting their guests. Their designer wedding attires were worth millions, and the jewelry they wore was priceless. The guests, all either wealthy or powerful, cheered in celebration. "Ahem... ahem, ahem..." Susan coughed violently. She was covered in filth, her body frail and thin. She looked worse than the most miserable beggar on the street, so weak that she couldn't even lift herself off the ground. "Susan—" Julie pinched her nose in exaggerated disgust, her voice dripping with mockery. Dressed in an elegant gown, she sneered, "What a shame you couldn't make it to my wedding with David." "You... you two? Ahem, ahem..." Susan's body trembled as she struggled to breathe. The groom in the video—David Reynolds—was her fiancé. The bride, Julie, was the junior classmate she had financially supported for years. They had betrayed her. A bitter, metallic taste filled her throat. Susan clenched her teeth, forcing out the words. "I want to see him." Julie let out a cold laugh. "My husband is very busy. He doesn't have time to see you, but... a quick phone call? That, I can arrange." She pulled out her phone, dialed a number, and placed it in front of Susan. "Julie, sweetheart..." A familiar voice came through the speaker. The warmth in David's tone made Susan's heart pound painfully. She spoke up, her voice trembling, "David, it's me. Susan." The tenderness vanished in an instant. His voice turned sharp and impatient. "Susan, I told you not to contact me again." "David... I'm dying," Susan whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "You and Julie... When did it start?" David hesitated for a moment before scoffing. "Does it even matter? Susan, this is all your fault. You brought this upon yourself." "No! That's not true—" Susan gasped, trying to explain. "I didn't do it!" "The evidence is crystal clear. You caused all of this, and now you're still trying to deny it?" David's voice was cold, devoid of any emotion. "If you're dying, then hurry up and die already. You should've been dead a long time ago." "David!" Susan sobbed, her heart breaking. She had met David in college, and they fell in love at first sight. When they got together, she felt sorry for him—he worked multiple part-time jobs just to afford tuition, leaving little time for studying. So, she covered all his expenses. After he graduated, despite opposition from everyone around her, she arranged for him to join her family's corporation as a research director. Back then, David had gazed at her with deep affection, kneeling before her as he swore that he would marry her as soon as she graduated. He promised to love her forever. But now, David was on the fast track to becoming the company's future leader. He had everything—success, status—yet the bride standing beside him was Julie. A sharp, unbearable pain twisted inside Susan's chest. She took a deep breath, knowing she didn't have much time left. She asked the only question that truly mattered to her. "David... Did you ever love me?" A cold chuckle came from the other end. "Susan, how could I possibly love someone as cruel as you?" His voice was filled with disgust. "I don't want to waste my time talking to a criminal. Don't ever call me again." And with that, he hung up. No. No, I didn't do it. I really didn't... Tears streamed down Susan's face. After David became a director, she had joined the company's virology lab. Six months ago, after finishing an experiment, she left work for the day—only to find out later that a deadly virus from her lab had mysteriously leaked. The outbreak was catastrophic. Her mentor, a legendary professor in virology, had been infected and died. Six researchers who survived suffered permanent immune deficiencies. David had been the one to contain the outbreak just in time, sealing off the lab and preventing an even greater disaster. He also proposed an innovative treatment that saved many lives. But when the security footage was reviewed, it showed Susan deliberately releasing the virus. Worse, her personal journal contained an entry stating she had done it out of revenge against the professor for rejecting one of her research papers. It was insane. No matter how desperately Susan swore she was innocent, no one believed her. The evidence was overwhelming. The loss of the esteemed professor and six brilliant young researchers shook the scientific community to its core. Her reputation was destroyed. Her family spent a fortune to keep her out of prison but ultimately cast her out. She was exiled to a remote, poverty-stricken island. Forced to survive alongside the island's impoverished locals, she worked tirelessly for food. But a simple cold turned into severe pneumonia due to the lack of medical treatment. Now, she was truly on the brink of death. "It wasn't me... I swear it wasn't me... Ahem... Ahem..." Susan curled up in pain, her body wracked with violent coughing fits. "Susan, you're so pathetic now," Julie smirked, her eyes filled with mockery. Then, her lips curled into a wicked grin. "But honestly? I'm thrilled. I've been waiting for you to die." "Why?" Susan rasped in agony. "I funded your education. I introduced you to my family. I treated you like my own sister. How could you betray me?" Julie burst into laughter, her expression both twisted and triumphant. "Yes, you were good to me. But you were stupid! You never even noticed how much I hated you. But since you're already dying, I might as well tell you a little secret." Julie leaned in close, lowering her voice to a whisper. "David was the one who released the virus. He edited the security footage. He rewrote your journal. And that so-called 'innovative treatment'? He stole it from your unfinished research paper—he just slapped a different academic title on it." Susan's heart nearly stopped. "What..." She had never suspected David. Not even after he abandoned her. Not even after he married Julie. "You really are dumb," Julie said, shaking her head in mock pity. "David was never respected at the company. If he didn't pull off something big, how else was he supposed to prove his worth? And, well... we couldn't be together unless you were out of the picture." Julie beamed. "Susan, David and I have been in love since before he even asked you to fund my education. Every night you stayed late at the lab, we were together, our souls intertwined. Right in your bedroom. David always thought you were boring. If it weren't for your money and family connections, he never would've gone after you." "You... you two—" Susan's ears buzzed. The man she had loved with all her heart... was a monster. David had killed the professor and ruined the futures of six brilliant researchers. How could he have done this? "I won't let you get away with this!" Susan screamed, vowing revenge. But her vision blurred. The world around her began to darken. As her consciousness faded, she barely heard Julie's final words. "Die, Susan. I'll throw your corpse into the ocean. Let your soul rot in the freezing water forever. Hehehe..." BANG! The door burst open. A pair of strong arms scooped Susan up, and a clear, steady voice whispered urgently in her ear. "Sue, I finally found you." Who...? Who was calling her by that name? Susan's eyes flew open. She was slumped over her desk in the research lab. What...? What just happened? She took a shaky breath, her heart pounding. Before she could make sense of it all, a familiar voice snapped at her in frustration. "Susan, where's the data Julie asked for? Why haven't you given it to her yet?" It was David.
