by Emmanuel Sunday

"Echoes of Yesterday" is a bittersweet romance about lost love and the passage of time. Sandra and Jerry were inseparable in school, bound by friendship that blossomed into something deeper. But life pulled them apart, and they lost each other's contact. Years later, the memories of what once was still linger, haunting their hearts like distant echoes. This story explores the fragile nature of human connection and the pain of letting go, set against a backdrop of nostalgia and regret. Will the past stay a memory, or will fate give them another chance?

Echoes of yesterday
Sandra and Jerry attended the same secondary school in a small town nestled between hills and farmlands. The town was peaceful, where everyone knew each other, and the school corridors echoed with laughter and whispers of teenage dreams. Sandra was popular—her infectious laughter and vibrant personality made her the heart of every room. She was always surrounded by friends, telling stories, planning events, and making everyone feel included. Jerry, on the other hand, was quieter. He preferred the back corner of the classroom, always with a book in hand, living in worlds that were far away from the real one. While Sandra was the center of attention, Jerry blended into the background. But there was something about her that fascinated him. He admired her from afar—the way her eyes sparkled when she laughed, the way she treated everyone with kindness. To him, she was the kind of person who made life brighter. They lived their lives parallel, passing by each other in the hallways, sharing the occasional smile but never really crossing paths—until the final year of school. It was a routine English class when the teacher announced a big group project. The students were randomly paired, and fate, for the first time, pushed Sandra and Jerry together. Sandra’s friends teased her about being partnered with the quiet boy, and Jerry, though nervous, couldn’t help but feel excited. He had always wanted to know what it would be like to talk to her, to see beyond her reputation. Their first few meetings were awkward. Sandra, used to lively conversations, didn’t know how to handle Jerry’s quiet demeanor. Jerry, on the other hand, struggled to open up. But as they spent more time together after school, working on their project in the library or at each other’s houses, the walls began to crumble. Jerry realized that Sandra wasn’t just the popular girl everyone adored—she was thoughtful, funny, and had dreams bigger than the town they lived in. Sandra, too, found herself drawn to Jerry’s intelligence and quiet strength. She loved the way he listened to her, how he never interrupted but always offered a perspective that made her see things differently. Their conversations became deeper, more personal. They talked about everything—the future, their fears, their families. Sandra confessed her dream of traveling the world, of leaving the small town behind and finding adventure. Jerry shared his love for literature, how he wanted to become a writer and capture the stories of people who lived in forgotten places. They were so different, yet in each other, they found someone who understood the parts of themselves they rarely shared with others. By the end of the term, their friendship had blossomed into something more, though neither of them dared to label it. They spent hours together after school, sometimes sitting in silence under the big tree near the school gate, comfortable in each other’s presence. Jerry began to walk Sandra home every day, and though they never spoke about it, it became the best part of their routine. As graduation approached, they made promises to each other that they believed were unbreakable. They exchanged phone numbers, swearing they’d stay in touch no matter what. Life was about to change, but they believed that nothing could tear them apart. But life, as it often does, had other plans. After graduation, Jerry received a scholarship to study literature at a prestigious university in the city, far away from the town they had both grown up in. Sandra stayed behind, attending a local college and helping her family with their small business. The first few months were full of long phone calls and late-night texts. They shared everything—their new experiences, their struggles, their hopes for the future. Despite the distance, they still felt close, tethered by the bond they had built. But slowly, things began to shift. Jerry’s new life at university was demanding—his classes, his new friends, and the excitement of the city began to pull him away from the small-town life he had left behind. Sandra, though she tried to stay positive, found it harder and harder to bridge the growing distance between them. Her texts became shorter, and Jerry, busy with his studies, often took longer to reply. Days would go by without a word from him, and Sandra would sit by her phone, waiting for it to light up with a message from him that never came. One day, Jerry’s phone was stolen. In the chaos of replacing it, he lost all his contacts, including Sandra’s number. He panicked, trying to remember her number by heart, but after so many years of relying on technology, it was a blur. He reached out to old classmates, mutual friends, but no one had her contact information anymore. With each passing day, his hope of reconnecting faded. Sandra, on the other hand, didn’t know what had happened. She thought Jerry had simply moved on, forgotten about her as he embraced his new life in the city. The pain of his silence was sharp, and after weeks of waiting for a call or a message, she changed her number, deciding that maybe it was time to move on, too. Life in their small town was predictable, comforting in its routine, but there was always a lingering ache in her heart where Jerry used to be. Years passed. Sandra continued her studies, eventually taking over her family’s business. She dated a few people but never felt the same connection she had with Jerry. Sometimes, she would walk by the old tree near the school gate and think of him, wondering if he still remembered her. Did he think about the afternoons they spent together, the long walks home, the unspoken feelings that had blossomed between them? Jerry finished university and became a writer, just as he had always dreamed. His books were well-received, but there was always something missing. He often thought about Sandra, about how they had lost touch, and wondered if she was happy. Every time he visited his hometown, he hoped to run into her, to somehow pick up where they had left off. But he never did. One rainy afternoon, years after they had last spoken, Jerry returned to the small town for a book signing. As he walked through the familiar streets, memories of his time with Sandra flooded back. He passed by their old school, where the tree still stood tall, its branches swaying gently in the wind. He paused, staring at it, a hollow feeling in his chest. At that same moment, Sandra was walking down the street, her umbrella shielding her from the rain. She glanced at the familiar tree and smiled sadly, remembering the boy who had once walked her home. She thought about him often, but life had moved on, and so had she—or at least, that’s what she told herself. They passed by each other on the street that day, so close yet so far. Sandra, now a woman with the weight of years in her eyes, didn’t recognize the man with the same quiet intensity she once knew. And Jerry, who had become so accustomed to looking for her in the past, didn’t see the woman who had once meant everything to him. They were strangers now, separated by time and missed chances. And so, they walked on, neither knowing how close they had come to the love they had once lost, the connection that had slipped through their fingers long ago, leaving only the memory of what might have been.
