The Night Everything Ended
The rain fell hard against the tall glass windows of the Hale Mansion.
Emma Carson stood in the middle of the living room, her fingers trembling slightly as she clutched the medical report in her hand. Her heart was still racing from what the doctor had told her just an hour ago.
She was pregnant.
The news had shocked her at first. But after the shock came a quiet, fragile happiness. She had spent the entire drive home imagining how she would tell her husband.
Alexander Hale.
The powerful CEO of Hale Group.
The man she loved more than anyone in the world.
Emma took a slow breath, trying to calm her nerves. She had imagined this moment so many times. Maybe he would be surprised. Maybe even a little awkward.
But surely he would be happy.
Before she could gather her thoughts, the front door opened with a sharp sound.
Alexander walked in.
Tall, composed, and intimidating as always, he removed his coat and handed it to the waiting servant. His dark eyes immediately landed on Emma.
But there was no warmth in them.
Only a cold distance.
Emma forced a small smile.
“Alexander… you’re home early.”
He didn’t respond.
Instead, he walked toward the table and placed a thin brown envelope on it.
The sound echoed through the silent room.
Emma’s smile slowly faded.
“What is that?”
Alexander finally looked at her.
His expression was unreadable.
“Open it.”
Something about his tone made Emma’s stomach tighten. Still, she stepped forward and opened the envelope.
Inside were several documents.
Her eyes scanned the first page.
Then the second.
By the third line, her hands began to shake.
Divorce Agreement.
Emma looked up at him in disbelief.
“…Alexander?”
He remained completely calm.
“Sign it.”
The words hit her like a slap.
Emma stared at him as if she had misheard.
“Sign… what?”
“The divorce papers.”
For a moment, the world seemed to stop.
The rain outside grew louder.
Emma felt the air leave her lungs.
“Why?”
Her voice came out softer than she expected.
Alexander’s jaw tightened slightly.
“You know why.”
“No, I don’t,” she said quickly, shaking her head. “I really don’t.”
Something flashed in his eyes.
Anger.
Without another word, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a photograph, tossing it onto the table.
Emma looked down.
Her face instantly turned pale.
It was a photo of her entering a hotel lobby the previous night.
Standing beside her was a man.
Emma’s heart skipped.
“That’s not —”
“You spent the night in a hotel with another man,” Alexander said coldly.
His voice was sharp enough to cut glass.
Emma’s mind raced.
“No, Alexander, listen to me. That’s a misunderstanding —”
“Enough.”
His voice rose slightly.
Emma froze.
Alexander looked at her as if she were a stranger.
“I don’t tolerate betrayal.”
Emma felt tears burn in her eyes.
“I didn’t betray you,” she whispered.
But Alexander simply pushed the papers closer to her.
“Sign them.”
Her vision blurred.
This couldn’t be happening.
Just an hour ago she had been planning to tell him about their baby.
Her fingers slowly tightened around the medical report she still held.
Should she tell him?
Should she explain everything?
Emma looked up at him.
For a brief moment, she hoped she might still see the man who once loved her.
But Alexander’s face was completely expressionless.
Cold.
Distant.
Unreachable.
Something inside her broke.
Emma slowly lowered her gaze.
Without another word, she picked up the pen from the table.
Alexander watched her silently.
The only sound in the room was the rain.
Emma signed her name.
Emma Carson Hale.
The last time she would ever write it.
She placed the pen down gently and pushed the papers back toward him.
Alexander took them without hesitation.
“Good,” he said.
The word felt like a knife.
Emma swallowed hard.
“There’s something I wanted to tell you tonight,” she said quietly.
Alexander didn’t look up from the documents.
“I’m not interested.”
The sentence destroyed the last piece of hope she had.
Emma nodded slowly.
“Alright.”
She turned and walked toward the staircase.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
Upstairs, inside the bedroom that had once been theirs, Emma finally allowed the tears to fall.
Her hands trembled as she opened the medical report again.
Two pink lines.
Positive.
Emma gently placed a hand over her stomach.
A soft sob escaped her lips.
“Don’t worry,” she whispered.
Her voice was shaking, but determined.
“I’ll protect you.”
Downstairs, Alexander stood alone in the silent living room.
The signed divorce papers rested in his hand.
He stared at Emma’s signature for a long moment.
For some reason, an uneasy feeling crept into his chest.
But he ignored it.
Outside, the storm continued to rage.
Neither of them knew that the decision made that night would change their lives forever.
And that five years later…
Fate would bring them face to face again.
