Chapter 1: The Book
Water splattered to my roof creating the pleasing melody that travelled to my ears making me moan with pleasure. I clinched my blanket and hugged it gently. I could smell the scent of the morning breeze traveling from my window. I could hear the boiling water from a teapot downstairs. The water, the scent. What am I feeling?
My alarm clock suddenly rang causing me to jump off my bed. I went to the kitchen and sat on the table watching my aunt cook.
"What are you cooking?" I asked.
"Just eggs, nothing new." She said.
"Is there any bread? I'm starving!" I exclaimed.
"Settle down, I'll prepare you a sandwich." She answered and continued cooking.
I sat on the chair with one foot on the table.
"Hey, put your foot down! Gosh, you're being a tomboy!" She exclaimed as she pat my foot.
I did what she said and just stared outside the window while waiting for my breakfast.
The atmosphere was humid, an eire noise coming from the people outside devastates me. The chirps of the bird, the noise of the trucks, yelling vendors, I'm annoyed!
"Ah!" I yelled.
My aunt was startled that caused her to jump and swear at the same time. I bursted out laughing as I saw her reaction.
"Jeesh Serenity!" She exclaimed. "What was that for?"
"I'm sorry, auntie, I was just feeling this weird feelings." I said.
"Just eat up!"
Aunt Kathy gave me a sandwich on a plate and I ate. After eating, I prepared myself to go to school.
"Serenity, hurry! You're going to be late!" Aunt yelled.
"I'm done!" I ran towards aunt and grabbed my bag.
"I love you." She uttered and kissed me.
"Bye, love you!" I said as I ran outside.
"Be careful!" Aunt said.
I hurriedly ran towards our school which is just twelve houses away.
"Fiddlesticks, I'm going to be late!"
I reached the gate and directly went to my classroom.
"Class, silent!" I yelled.
The classroom was quite, every students eyes were on me.
"Look at madame, her eyebrows are connected." They all started to laugh as they saw my face.
I ran to the bathroom and looked at my face on the mirror. My brows were connected.
"Shitty make-up!" I washed my face and went back to the classroom.
While I was walking by the hallway, I felt something strange. The sky became dark and the atmosphere became humid in an instance. I was worried. I ran towards my students, but non of them were in there.
"Kids!" I yelled.
I looked for them every corner of the school, but they were nowhere to be seen, infact everyone at school were gone. I went back to the classroom. My heart pounded really hard that I could no longer think completely.
I closed my eyes and cried. I sat on my chair and placed my elbows on the table while covering my face with my palms.
"Madame, are you okay?" A familiar voice spoke to me followed by a tap on my shoulder.
I clinched my fist and wiped my tears. When I opened my eyes, everything returned to normal. The students were crying, teachers gathered and a few school's nurse came.
"Ms. Serenity, what is going on?" The nurse on my side asked.
I smiled as I felt relieved that everything went back to normal. I hugged the nurse and they comforted me.
"Ms. Serenity, what happened to you?" She asked.
"I—I don't know! I was just washing my face and when I came back to class, the sky turned dark, there were no one around, and the atmosphere became humid. I didn't know what I was feeling that I bursted out crying!" I explained.
They were all stunned, all eyes were on me.
"Miss, you were wondering around the area, we've been here the whole time... we even saw you yelling like you were looking for something." The nurse said. "And the sky never turned dark, it is not even cloudy outside! You should call it a day miss, take some rest." She said with a calming voice.
I heard murmurs as the nurse guided me through the hallway. I was afraid to take a step outside, but the feeling lately was no longer around. I was relieved... the atmosphere is no longer that dense. She led me to the gate and my fellow teacher got me home with his car.
"Thank you Mister." I said as he opened the door of his car.
"You are much welcome!" He smiled.
I went out of the car and went inside our house. Aunt greeted me with a worried face.
"What happened to your face?" She asked with a worried tone.
"Nothing, I think I was just exhausted." I replied and sat on the couch.
"Wait, I'll get you some water." Aunt Kathy went to the kitchen to fetch me some water.
I laid on the couch and placed my arm over my face. I took a deep breath and sighed as I closed my eyes. The silence of the room was loosening the tension of my muscles. Peace, ever so great.
"Here, drink this." My aunt said and handed me the glass of water.
I sat back and drank the water. Aunt sat beside me and patted my back.
"You should stop volunteering to teach those youngsters. You're still seventeen, you should go to highschool!" She exclaimed.
"Aunt, you know I'm beyond their intelligence that is why my teachers recommended me to a special university. I don't want you to worry for money. And you do know I don't like going far from home. Besides, I love teaching those kids." I replied.
"Serenity, you don't need to work, I can feed you three times a day... I still have the strength to work and earn." Aunt said. "You should focus on your studies, be like normal teenagers! Finish school and get your desired job." She said with a gentle voice.
"Teaching is my dream and I am already doing it. I don't need any degree to share my knowledge to people." I said.
"That is true, but you're still sixteen, you are exhausting yourself!" Aunt stood up and touched my face. "Your parents want you to be normal... please be normal." She said.
I looked at her eyes at it became wet.
"Auntie, are you crying?" I asked.
"Huh? No... this is just from not blinking." She smiled and wiped her eyes with her palms.
As my aunt mentioned my parents, I became curious.
I've never seen my parents. My aunt said they died because of an accident and only I survived. She's been telling me that since my childhood that I no longer cared of wanting to know the truth or what my parents look like.
"I prepared lunch, let's eat!" Aunt said.
"I'm tired, I think I should get some rest." I went upstairs to my bedroom and laid on my bed.
I closed my eyes and listened to my surrounding. The ticking of the clock, the noises of cars and trucks, the kids yelling and giggling and the crows roaring on the trees.
Too much noise!
I stood up and closed the window beside my bed. Silence. I went back to bed and laid my face on my pillow.
The pillow was soft. My body became light that I felt like I was a feather. I was about to sleep when my alarm rang again.
"Trifle!" I went up and turned off my alarm. I sat on my bed and wondered what to do.
Now what?
I decided to read. I stood up and took a book from the shelves on the corner of my room. I took the book from the highest shelve. I struggled to get it, but I did after many attempts. The book was dusty, I could still smell the dust from the book. It made my nose irritate that I suddenly sneezed and threw the book accidentally. The book went under my bed.
I crawled down and reached for the book. After some time reaching for it, I held a book in my grips and pulled it out. It was not the book, it was quite old, dustier than the other one.
I wiped its cover and the dusts were removed. I opened the book and it was filled with mythical creature's pictures and the rules about that creature.
Giants are the guardian of the borders.
Fairies are the protector of the nature.
Sirens are the guardian of the seas.
Elves are the ruler of the day.
Vampires are the ruler of the night.
Werewolves are the ruler of the night.
"Wait, why are there two rulers of the night?" I wondered.
I read more of the book when suddenly aunt came into my room.
"What are you reading?" Aunt asked.
"This old book I found under my bed." I replied.
Her eyes widened. "Where'd you get that?"
"Under my bed. Why the sudden expression?" I asked as I closed the book.
"It's better for you to learn who you really are on your own so that you would further understand. Tomorrow, when the blue moon rises, you will know the truth."
