HAYLEY
I didn't know how much further Lacey could run, I could see her running out of energy as she forced her body to keep going. I could her her breathing getting heavier and knew she wouldn't last much longer. The pack was catching up to us, there was no way we could spare any time to stop but if we didn't I knew my baby sister would soon stumble and get killed by the team of wolves out for our blood that were hot on our tails.
I had to do something, Lacey is only a pup, we needed to stop so she would recover. As the trees got thicker I suddenly shifted, grabbed my sister by the scruff of her wolf's neck and scaled a tree climbing as high as I could. I grabbed the backpack off my back and quickly threw some scent bombs down to the ground around the tree hoping to mask our scents and make it smell like forest again.
Once I'd covered our backs I threw on some clothes out of the bag, got Lacey changed and wrapped in a blanket before using some rope to tie her to the tree branch and letting her drift off to sleep. I used my wolf hearing to listen until I could no longer hear the hoard of wolves after us. Nightfall was rolling in fast and soon we'd be enveloped in the safety of darkness to cover us the rest of the way to the border. Knowing we both needed to conserve our energy for the final push I secured a rope around myself and let myself drift off too.
My dreams were filled with the torture we'd left behind, I could still see clearly in my mind the image of my 14 year old baby sister sprawled out unconscious and naked on our shared bed covered in bruises and her own blood whilst our monster of a stepfather was passed out on the couch in his underwear with a bottle in his hand. It was engraved in my mind and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get rid of it. It was all my fault, if stayed out at a study group and unwittingly left my sister to deal with his anger. Since that day my focus was getting her healed up and stealing every penny I could from him so we could make our escape. And that is how we got here, the day before my eighteenth birthday being hunted by 'The Big Bad Alpha'.
