Mate?

874 Words
ALPHA JACKSON REID After my shower I couldn't stop thinking about the shewolves that we lost earlier. We never lose our prey. It made me angry and everybody in the pack house could feel the anger rolling off me. Maybe that's why when I went downstairs to grab a drink there was nobody in sight. I could still smell the roast chicken dinner they had eaten earlier hanging in the air. I had skipped dinner, I couldn't eat when I feel like this. I noticed a post-it note on the fridge as I padded past barefoot on the kitchen tiles, 'Dinner is in the fridge if you get hungry Alpha. -Ryan' My Beta had obviously asked his mate to grab me some before it got served and devoured by the pack. Stevie was a sweet, caring girl and was a perfect match for Ryan's rugged looks and masculine attitude. I may strike everyone as a hardass but I cared for every member of my pack like family and am secretly really excited the meet Ryan and Stevie's pups in a month. They have been together for two years, married for one and are expecting their first litter of three soon. I couldn't be happier for them. Even if I was always a bit jealous that I've been waiting to find my mate for ten years now and still have no idea if I'll ever meet her. I grabbed a can of cola out of the fridge, cracked it open and took a long gulp of the cold contents before leaning against the counter and allowing myself to wonder how those girls today just disappeared. We have never been bested before but this one had me puzzled. The more I thought about it, the more frustrated it made me until I stomped my way back upstairs to the West wing of the pack house and changed from my sweatpants and long sleeved top into some basketball shorts and headed outside. I was going to find them even if it took me all night. The wind had dropped since we were last outside and the skies were clear with a thin sliver of a moon slightly illuminating the forest and millions of stars twinkling against the dark velvet sky. If I wasn't so worked up I would've maybe stopped and admired how beautiful it was out tonight. Instead I shifted and took off at full speed towards where we lost the scents, staying at a steady pace so my wolf didn't feel the chill of the autumnal air. HAYLEY I woke with a jump, it was pitch black and I knew we needed to get a move on if we wanted to get out of Golden Crest territory and to safety with my mother's sister with the Blue Lake pack without getting caught. I shook Lacey to wake her and offered her the last cereal bar and gulp of water that we had before we packed the bag and climbed down from the high branches of the tree. The forest was eerily quiet but that was better than the sounds of snarls and howling from earlier as we were being pursued. We were about to strip out of our clothes when both Lacey and I froze at the same time, something was heading towards us at a great speed. Lacey looked at me with panic in her big green eyes before we both started getting undressed as quickly as possible and stuffing the clothes into the backpack with haste. As soon as we were stripped down and the backpack was on my back I only had to glance at my sister before we both shifted and started running East as fast as our wolf's legs would carry us. We had been running without a break for about 10 minutes now and I knew if we didn't pace ourselves soon the lack of proper food and water for the past week would soon make us run out of energy and get sick very fast. I was desperate to slow down and let Lacey get into a steady rhythm so she could run for longer but I could still hear whoever was barrelling towards us earlier and it was still heading straight for us, probably following our scent. If we didn't soow down soon we may die but if its someone from the Golden Crest Pack then we'd be dead as soon as they catch up to us anyways. With that realisation I hoped I was wrong and mindlinked Lacey, "Let's slow down, we can't keep running like this 'cause we're gonna burn out" Looking to me and nodding her pretty little wolf head Lacey slowed when I did and settled into a steady canter. I just hope it'll be fast enough to keep us alive. JACKSON As I reached where the scents had disappeared earlier they suddenly became string again, only this time they were different, I could smell the young shewolf still but the other scent now smelled like the most divine mixture of roses and vanilla. I inhaled deeply and paused a moment, filled with a sense of happiness and comfort. Wait, what?! "MATE!" my wolf shouted in my head before howling. Oh crap.
