Chapter 7

I looked at the elderly woman standing in front of me, with some girls behind her. The girls didn’t really look old, but I knew they were older than me. "Uhm," I stuttered as my eyes scanned their faces and outfits. They all wore black and white dresses, more like uniforms for maids. I hadn’t expected maids in this place, but considering how big the house was, maids were something to anticipate. “Why are you just staring at me?” the elderly woman blurted out, her voice commanding and bold. “I don’t know what you mean,” I replied. She turned to look at one of the girls. “Madam Rose, she is the new maid,” one girl explained. “She was brought here yesterday by Alpha Damian,” another maid added, explaining my arrival to Madam Rose, who simply nodded. “Alpha Damian said she will be the triplets’ new guardian,” the girl said, looking at me with a hint of disgust in her grey eyes. Her British accent made it a little difficult for me to understand what she was saying. "Alpha Damian's replacement isn’t really expected, but what can I do? He is the Alpha King, after all," the girl added. "So Maria is really gone," Madam Rose muttered, loud enough for me to hear. "Probably for the best," the grey-eyed girl spoke. "She was a nutty old wrench anyway," she added, huffing. "Becky, language," another girl said, addressing the British-accented girl by name. "You shall not speak to me in that tone," Becky retorted. Madam Rose sighed. "Enough." Her voice sounded calm but carried a note of authority that made the girls fall silent. I stared at them in confusion, wondering what they were. I knew they were probably wolves, but they looked different, especially Becky, who was obviously from England. "Girls, take her to the maids' locker and get her a uniform," Madam Rose ordered before leaving without even looking at me. What does she mean by uniform? I wasn’t brought here to be a maid. Wait, what was I brought here for? My inner voice kept questioning as I walked with the girls toward the locker room Madam Rose mentioned. “So, what’s your name and where are you from?” one of the girls asked as we reached the locker room, pulling me from the chaos in my head. “I’m Thalia. I don’t know,” I slowly uttered, having no clue where I belonged. “Isn’t that lovely? The new guardian for the triplets doesn’t even know where she is from,” Becky scoffed. “I’m Catherine, from Australia,” Catherine said with a small smile. “That’s Claudia and Mariam, both from the Netherlands, Tina from Nigeria, and Becky from England,” Catherine introduced the rest of the girls behind her. I couldn’t help but wonder why all these girls, who should be in college, were here working as maids, traveling all the way to England just to work for the Alpha King. Becky slowly walked towards a locker and brought out a uniform. “Such a beautiful dress. It even has the Moon Crest Pack sign on it,” she said, staring at the dress with admiration. Like, bruh, it was just a dress. “The Moon Crest Pack holds a very high reputation as it is the most popular and versatile pack ever. No one comes close,” Becky explained. “Do you girls belong to the Moon Crest Pack?” I questioned without even realizing it. Tina sighed. “We were all brought here to learn how to fit in,” she explained. “Most of us,” Becky added, giving Tina a look that said, ‘You aren’t the girl.’ “Most of you?” I repeated, making Becky sigh. “Look, newbie, the Moon Crest Pack is like a dream come true for any young girl to get the chance to experience it,” Becky told me. “But you are just a maid here,” I said nonchalantly, making Becky gasp as Mariam and Tina tried to hold back their laughter. “You take that back,” Becky growled. “Hey, let’s not get angry now. Why don’t you explain the importance of the dress?” Catherine suggested, trying to calm Becky down. Becky took a deep breath before explaining. I seriously don’t know why they hold this place in such high regard. I mean, why would I dream of working as a maid when there was so much more to life? “The dress really is adorable,” Becky giggled. I couldn’t even hear her explanation as I was busy listening to my inner voice talk. I mean, I understand Madam Rose working here because she looks quite old. I thought she was in her thirties earlier, but seeing her face up close made me realize she is probably pushing sixty. “Sheesh,” I hissed, trying to silence the voice in my head. I couldn’t understand it yet, but I knew it was connected to me. “Don’t sheesh me,” a voice scoffed. I turned to see Becky glaring at me, holding a uniform. “Oh no, I wasn’t talking to you,” I quickly said. Becky walked toward me. “Look, I won’t tolerate an American-looking teenager being all bratty,” she told me, throwing the dress in my face before walking away with the rest of the girls following her. “I’m 18, by the way,” I said. “Not a teenager,” I added, even though they were all gone. --- I was fully dressed in the maid outfit. “Gosh, this is so uncomfortable,” I muttered, reaching down to the waistband and pulling at it a little because I could hardly breathe. I walked outside toward the garden. The air had a nice breeze and a pleasant scent as I sniffed the flowers. The sky was getting dark, making me wonder if I would ever be able to find my real parents and where I was born. “You look hot,” a voice said, and I turned to see Orion smiling at me. “Uh, thanks,” I muttered, feeling a little shy. “Never knew a maid uniform could suit a person,” Orion added. I didn’t know if he was being nice or trying to mock me. Well, he was one of the triplets, so I didn’t expect anything nice coming from him. “Will you stop chatting with the maid and let’s go,” Zev uttered while walking towards Orion. I didn’t even realize they were back from school and wearing different clothes. “Uh, where are you guys going?” I asked, looking at their stylish outfits. “To a party. Wanna come?” Jarl mocked, laughing a little. “You want the whole place to be terrified?” Zev remarked, scoffing. The triplets were about to walk away when I yelled, “Stop!” Zev rolled his eyes and turned to look at me. “What do you want now?” he frowned. “You guys aren’t going anywhere,” I stated boldly, making their eyes widen as they looked at each other.
