Day 2

The wood creaked lightly as I climbed onto the Peach cabin. I still didn't understand why the names on the cabins had no definite register. I shrugged slightly reminding myself it was none of my business. I reached for the knocker on the door and waited patiently.  "Who's that?" I could hear Joan's voice on the other side. She sounded sleepy. "It's me" I replied and then added, "it's me, Allie".  I could hear the lock of the door been pushed back with urgency. ln seconds, Joan was outside. She was putting on her Patriotic America PJs. Her hair was tousled as she stared at me with concern.  "Are you alright?" she asked her eyes filled with concern. I only nodded. "I am sorry Jo" I begged. "I am sorry for the hurtful things I said to you in the car, you've been nothing but a wonderful friend and sister and I take it for granted, am sorry Jo" I panted anxiously. Joan big brown eyes stared at me in surprise.  *** Today was my one year friendversary with Allie. It seemed almost a long time since we were whispering under the table; we were in 5th grade. I smoothed the edges of the "Needful Things by Stephen Kings". I wondered if Al would like it. She's so crazy for Stephen Kings novels. I had searched desperately for a gift for my dear friend who had almost everything. I had gone to an old antique shop when my eyes fell on the copy of "Needful Things" sitting lonely at the top of the shelf. It was cheap but it would mean a lot to Allie. I smiled fondly as I try to imagine her facial reaction. I waited patiently for Allie to get to her locker that morning.  "Hey girl" she started "why didn't wait for me today?" she asked crossly. "Sorry girlfriend, I needed to do something this morning" I replied with a smile.  She flashed me a smile and punched in the combinations of her locker. I stood with my heart in my hand.  "Oh my God Jo!" someone got me Needful things she exclaimed as you opened the book with excitement. I didn't bother wrapping the book; Al hated wrappings, it wasted her time. The single note fell off from the book, she bent to pick it, as she was engrossed in reading the writeup I sneaked to the class.  "Happy Friendversary girlfriend" I yelped to the morning sky. *** My friendship with Allie has been rocky for the past 8 years mostly because Allie is as stubborn as a goat. She had a knack for getting herself into trouble. She never listened to me and feels I overthink. But, In all the 8years of our friendship, Allie had never apologized first. I looked at her pleading eyes, searching for a hint of mockery but sincere eyes stared back at me. This was real.  My best friend was staring at me with shock written all over her eyes.  "uhmm...it's O-okay babes" she stammered "I am sorry too," she said pulling me in for a hug.  Today will be good. *** Long after I left Joan's, I stopped first at our Cabin to wake up the campers. We had Gym this morning. As I dressed up, I couldn't help but wonder if the universe was giving me a sign. In less than 24 hours, I've had a reunion with my Ex and my childhood crush and it is not looking like a coincidence.  The incessant knocking on my room's door broke my thoughts as I hurried to the door.  "Oh!" I exclaimed when I saw Nita.  "Good morning," I said brightly ignoring how my heart started beating anxiously. She smiled back her greetings. "Can I come in?" she asked bemusingly. "S-sorry, what was that?" I shouted. I had been staring at the mole above her lips. I didn't like the way she made me feel. I shifted my feet uncomfortably. "I said, can I come in?" she repeated pushing past me. She flopped herself on my bed. "I am so sorry, I couldn't make it yesterday, I was so busy," she told me. I blushed slightly when I remembered how busy she was with the boy. I wondered if she knew I saw her. "So, what are we doing today?" she asked again. I wanted to ask her if she didn't get the manual from the front desk but  "We have the gym for this morning and then some outdoor activities later in the afternoon" I replied counting off with my fingers. She nodded her head. "How about tonight?" she asked again, I could see a glint in her eyes. I had this vague feeling that she was trying to test my patience. "Well, I heard something about a night party" I shrugged my shoulders nonchalantly.  The universe had it in for me. "Oh!, okay". she simply said while she stared at me. She stood up from my bed and started walking around my room.  Okay, honest I had packed some old CDs, a radio, a picture frame and some things with me, so I simply placed it around my room, to reduce some of its bleakness. She stared at the picture frame, I had brought the one with the whole family.  "Is this your family?" she asked. I stopped myself from rolling my eyes. "Yeah" I replied. I didn't like the way she was touching my stuff as if she owned it. "hmmm...you don't look like the Elvis Presley type of person" she commented examining the CD. "okay" I replied, trying to keep the disgust out of my voice "you know I was about dressing up before you came in, remember I still have to go check on those kids, to make sure they're ready" I stressed looking at her. "Oh!, my bad!" she laughed. "I will just go and get dressed too" she dropped the CDs and moved towards the door. I followed closely, I just wanted to make sure she didn't change her mind. When we got to the door she turned and looked at me "Did you like what you saw yesterday evening?" she whispered leaning towards me, her lips were parted as she smiled provocatively. She was deliberately trying to get on my nerves. I squeezed my face in disgust.  "That's very creepy" I replied "you might want to lock your door properly when next you want to act out a pornographic scene" I clapped back. She was taken aback and wanted to retort but I shut the door right at her face.  I am not letting anyone ruin my morning for me, not even the universe.
