The Unexpected Return

Chapter Fifty-Eight: The Unexpected Return Elara's POV "Kaiden?" The name escaped my lips before I could stop it. The entire courtyard fell silent. The young man standing just inside Shadowmoon's gates barely resembled the confident Alpha heir I had once known. His clothes were torn. His face was bruised. Dried blood covered one side of his forehead. Heavy iron shackles still hung from one wrist, the broken chain dragging across the stone behind him. He looked exhausted. Broken. Not defeated... Humbled. Draven immediately stepped beside me. Not in front of me. Beside me. His hand gently found mine. A silent question. Are you alright? I squeezed his hand. "I'm okay." Orion spoke through our bond. "He isn't a threat." Lunara nodded. "He's changed." Vespera remained cautious. "Let's hear what he has to say." --- "Guards!" Alpha Alaric's voice thundered across the courtyard. Dozens of Shadowmoon warriors surrounded Kaiden. Weapons drawn. Kaiden slowly lifted both hands. "I didn't come here to fight." King Cassian stepped forward. His crimson eyes carefully studied Kaiden. "Then why are you here?" Kaiden looked directly at me. "I came..." His voice cracked. "...to warn you." A murmur spread through the courtyard. "The Hollow Court isn't finished." "They're gathering something far worse than the beast." The Keeper's expression darkened. "I feared as much." --- Alpha Alaric motioned for the guards to lower their weapons. "Speak." Kaiden nodded weakly. "They kept me alive because they wanted to use me against Elara." He looked at me with regret filling his eyes. "They believed I could manipulate you." "I told them no." King Cassian folded his arms. "And they believed you?" Kaiden gave a bitter laugh. "No." "They tortured me until they thought I'd break." My stomach turned. Even after everything between us... No one deserved that. --- "They moved me to another prison two nights ago." Kaiden continued. "A group of rogues attacked the transport." "I don't know who they were." "They weren't Hollow Court." "They weren't Shadowmoon." "They simply attacked everyone." "In the chaos..." "I escaped." Draven frowned. "You came here instead of running." Kaiden nodded. "There was nowhere else to go." He looked around the courtyard. "And..." His eyes met mine. "...I owed someone an apology." --- The silence that followed was heavier than any battle. Kaiden slowly walked toward me. He stopped several feet away. Far enough that no one felt threatened. He lowered his head. "When I rejected you..." "I told myself I was choosing what was best for my pack." He laughed bitterly. "The truth?" "I was proud." "I judged you by your title." "Your rank." "What everyone else believed." His eyes filled with tears. "I never stopped long enough..." "...to see you." My own eyes stung. "I was wrong." He swallowed hard. "I don't expect forgiveness." "I don't expect friendship." "I don't expect anything." "I just..." His voice broke. "I'm sorry." --- The courtyard remained silent. Every warrior watched. Waiting. I looked at Kaiden. Then at Draven. Draven simply nodded. He wasn't jealous. He wasn't angry. He trusted me. That trust gave me strength. I stepped forward. Kaiden looked surprised. "I forgive you." His eyes widened. "But..." I continued gently. "I can't go back." A tear rolled down his cheek. "I know." "I don't want you to." He looked toward Draven. Then smiled sadly. "I finally understand." Draven raised an eyebrow. "Understand what?" Kaiden answered honestly. "The difference between finding a mate..." "...and choosing to love someone." He looked back at me. "You deserve someone who saw your worth before anyone else did." He extended his hand toward Draven. "Take care of her." Without hesitation... Draven accepted it. "I will." "No matter what." Orion spoke proudly. "Always." Lunara purred. "That's why he's ours." Vespera smiled. "Family." --- King Cassian watched the exchange carefully. Then he spoke. "Kaiden Silvercrest." Kaiden straightened. "You entered my kingdom seeking forgiveness." "You've received it." "But trust..." He looked around the courtyard. "...must be earned." Kaiden nodded. "I understand." Alpha Alaric stepped forward. "If you're sincere..." "Prove it." "Fight beside us." "Train with us." "Help us stop the Hollow Court." Kaiden placed one hand over his heart. "You have my word." "I'll spend the rest of my life making up for my mistakes." The Keeper quietly stepped forward. "Then your redemption begins today." Far away... Hidden within the Hollow Court fortress... The silver-masked leader stood before a map of the kingdoms. A dark-haired woman knelt beside him. "My lord..." "He escaped." The masked man smiled beneath his silver mask. "I know." She looked confused. "You planned this?" His crimson eyes gleamed. "No." He slowly rolled up the map. "I allowed it." He turned toward the window overlooking the dark mountains. "Every hero needs someone on the inside." "And every kingdom..." He smiled coldly. "...needs to wonder if they can truly trust the man who once rejected their future Queen." Lightning flashed across the sky. The game was far from over.
