Chapter 8: Pressure Points

444 Words
Exams loomed in a few weeks, and the pressure on campus was intense. Luna’s friends, Aiko and Sora, cornered her one afternoon by the lockers. “You okay?” Aiko asked, concern in her eyes. Luna shrugged, tucking a loose lock of hair behind her ear. “We heard about Arata. That jerk,” Sora snapped. “How can he come back after knowing you’re with someone?” Luna clenched her fist, remembering the way Arata had pleaded that day. “He’s hurt,” she admitted quietly. Aiko placed a gentle hand on Luna’s shoulder. “But Kai… he treats you so well. Doesn’t he?” Luna hesitated, looking away. She pressed her lips together. “Yeah,” she admitted. “He does.” Sora beamed. “Then why are you still upset? The two of you should face him together—make him understand.” Luna managed a tired smile. “I will,” she promised. Meanwhile, Kai’s own friend, Yui Matsuda, noticed the tension in his eyes. They sat together on a bench after club, books spread out. “You okay?” Yui asked. Her long hair framed a worried face. Kai looked at his notes, forcing a grin. “Yeah, just tired from studying.” Yui pushed her glasses up. “Come on, Kai. I know you. It’s Luna, isn’t it?” He dropped his pencil. Yui had an uncanny sense for these things. “She’s dealing with Arata right now,” he admitted in a low voice. Yui nodded thoughtfully. “That’s tough. But you two are really good together. You better fight for her, okay?” Her tone was gentle. “I know you will. Just… don’t let doubt creep in.” Kai stared at his textbook, heart pounding. “Thanks,” he whispered. He realized how lucky he was to have friends who genuinely cared about his happiness. As the final exam period began, Kai and Luna found themselves studying late under a single desk lamp in the empty lecture hall. The hush of midnight study was oddly soothing, a small oasis in the storm of stress. Luna blinked at a complicated problem on the blackboard. Kai reached over and pointed, quietly explaining a step. A silence fell when he finished. Luna’s gaze lingered on him. “Kai,” she said softly, “thank you, for… everything.” He turned to her with a slow smile, tired but genuine. “Always.” Outside, the night breeze fluttered through open windows, cooling Luna’s sweaty palms. Inside, they were not just students preparing for an exam—they were two young people forging a connection in the midst of chaos
