Chapter 1: The Marriage Clause
Kai Moriyama pushed open the heavy glass door of the city hall’s conference room with trembling hands. Sunlight slanted in through the tall windows, touching the polished oak table and dust motes dancing in the air. His heart fluttered strangely as he stepped inside. Seated at the far end, flanked by solemn adults in formal attire, was a young woman he’d never met—but whom his entire future now depended on. She leaned forward on the table, arms crossed, chin propped on one fist. Her dark hair was streaked with honey-blonde highlights, and even from the back of the room, Kai could see she wore a short plaid skirt and knee-high boots. The nameplate on the table in front of her read “Luna Hayashi.”
Luna lifted her eyes and met his. Her gaze was fierce and puzzled. “You’re the guy, right?” she said coolly. Her voice was confident, with just a hint of challenge. Kai swallowed, nodding. He was painfully shy, but the moment his eyes met hers, he felt an unfamiliar warmth. She was breathtaking, in a bold and magnetic way.
An older man—a lawyer—cleared his throat. “Kai Moriyama, Luna Hayashi,” he said. “By clause seventeen of the Moriyama-Hayashi family contract…” Kai’s stomach lurched. He had heard vague rumors about this arrangement, but seeing Luna here, listening as their parents seated beside them nattered on about “honoring family commitments,” made it real. They were legally bound to marry.
Luna shot her mother a glare. “You promised you wouldn’t do this,” she hissed under her breath, but loud enough that Kai heard. Her mother’s lips pressed in a line. Across the table, Kai’s own mother cleared her throat uncertainly, and Kai realized he was expected to speak.
Swallowing, he managed a small smile. “Luna… it’s… nice to finally meet you,” he said softly. His voice was gentle, careful. Luna raised an eyebrow.
“Great,” she muttered, but the tension around her eyes softened. The lawyer tapped a pen against the contract documents. “If you are both willing, please sign.”
Luna scoffed but took the pen. Kai mirrored her action. He glanced at the contract title: Marriage Agreement—Moriyama & Hayashi. His heart felt like it had turned over. Luna exhaled sharply as she scribbled her signature.
“For all intents and purposes,” Kai whispered, “we… are married.”
She rolled her eyes. “Don’t start, okay?” Luna said softly, but there was a tremble in her voice he almost didn’t catch. “I didn’t want this any more than you did.”
Kai nodded, afraid he might cry. Outside, a crow cawed. The standoffish beauty beside him tapped her pen against the table and shot him a sideways glance. For a moment, their eyes locked, and the world narrowed to just the two of them. In Luna’s swirling hazel eyes, Kai felt a torrent of confusion and something else—something tender and flickering.
He offered her the slightest smile. “Maybe… maybe it can work,” he said quietly.
Luna opened her mouth, seemed about to retort, but then closed it. The lawyer cleared his throat again. “Congratulations, you are now legally engaged.”
Kai’s heart fluttered oddly at the word. Luna’s cheeks colored faintly. Neither of them could have guessed how much that one sentence would change both of their lives.
