Chapter 4: Beneath the Cherry Blossoms

658 Words
Early spring festival lanterns glowed pink under canopies of cherry blossoms. Kai and Luna walked side by side down the lantern-lined path in the evening air, the campus’ annual “Sakura Night” in full bloom. Both had surprisingly ended up volunteering for the student council to earn extra credit—another way to spend time together, Luna had said. Luna’s fingers brushed Kai’s arm as they strolled. The breeze caught loose petals and her plaid skirt fluttered. She looked up at him with eyes shining faintly, her makeup dusted with a blush. “You know, you look serious even at a festival,” Luna teased. Kai smiled, wrapping an arm gently around her waist. The closeness was strangely natural now. “I am serious,” he replied, “serious about having fun.” Luna tugged on his sleeve. “Good, then hold my hand and find me cotton candy.” Her words were light, but the warmth of her small fingers clutching his palm nearly made his knees weak. They followed the crowd to a stall with pink cotton candy. Kai bought two, and Luna offered him the first bite with a playful half-smile. They found seats on a low wooden bench. Plates of takoyaki on a picnic table shared with a friend. Luna’s friends, a lively trio of gyaru girls—Aiko, Rimi, and Sora—greeted Kai warmly. They chattered about weddings, asking Luna who he was. Luna curtly introduced him as "the fiancé," rolling her eyes. Aiko clapped her hands, delighted. “So, you two are actually dating?” she asked. Her tone was teasing but hopeful. Kai’s heart sank. Dating? He gently shook his head. “Not... exactly,” Luna interrupted quickly, and Kai wondered if she was embarrassed. Her shoulders were tensed. She shot Luna a reproachful glare. But Kai blushed and looked away before answering. “We’re not dating, actually. But, um… we’re together sometimes.” His voice was quiet but genuine. Rimi grinned. “It’s adorable,” she cooed. “He’s so shy around you.” Luna’s face softened at the observation. “He’s not that shy,” she chided affectionately, elbowing Kai. He chuckled nervously, eyes meeting Luna’s. She squeezed his hand under the table. In that brief touch, years of loneliness seemed to vanish. Later, by the fountain lit by lantern light, Kai and Luna strolled a little away from the crowd. Moonlight filtered through the pink petals above, making Luna’s hair shimmer. “I was really scared today,” Luna confessed quietly. “When I saw you in the café yesterday…I mean, I didn’t expect you to actually be kind.” Kai smiled gently. “I was scared, too.” They stopped walking. Kai risked meeting her gaze. “You scared me today too,” he admitted. “When you said you only love someone else. Because…” He hesitated, heart beating fast. “Because I—” Luna’s eyes widened with concern. “Oh—Kai, I’m sorry.” She gently patted his hand. He offered a small smile. “It’s okay. I just…” His voice caught. “I like you, Luna. I think I already do.” For a heartbeat, Luna did not respond. Then she covered her face, leaning her head on his shoulder. Luna sighed softly. “Kai… I like you too. I think I... I’m starting to.” They sat on the fountain’s edge, her head on his shoulder. Kai felt a happy warmth spread through him as he gently reached up and intertwined their fingers. Luna’s lashes fluttered closed; an odd vulnerability tugged at him seeing her like that. She gave a quiet laugh. “You’re really something, Moriyama,” she murmured. “I like this.” He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. The city lights danced on the petals around them, and for the first time since the marriage clause was signed, everything felt right.
