Zale tucked his wings close as he descended to Montrose. He shouted instructions at his soldiers, sending them to join the fight. Then he veered toward the settlement, whipping over the housetops. The streets below him were empty. In the distance, smoke billowed up from the forest. He needed to go there and help defend Montrose too, but first he needed to know his mate was safe. Maryk should have returned with her from the councilor"s house by now, so he went straight to the condo. He skidded to a halt in the street in front of the place they shared. The complex was eerily quiet. Were the mates hiding? Where were the betas to protect them? Or had the human soldiers already been here? His heart stuttered at that thought. He sucked in a deep breath. No. No strange scents tainted the air.
