Bound shadows : chapter one : the dream that shook her
Bound in the Shadows – Chapter One: The Dream That Shook Her Annie Jason had everything that money could buy, but nothing that her soul truly needed. Her father’s wealth built her golden cages, but not a home. She had once known love her mother’s love but death had stolen it when she was just fifteen. Since then, Annie had lived with a wound that never healed. Her father remarried quickly, too quickly. The woman he brought into their mansion wore elegance like a mask, but Annie always felt the bitterness behind her painted smile. Her stepmother’s words were never openly cruel, but her silence, her cold eyes, her veiled insults those cut deeper than a knife. And Clara, the daughter from her stepmother’s previous marriage, made life even worse. Jealous, manipulative, and sharp-tongued, Clara treated Annie as though she were an intruder in her own father’s house. In a mansion filled with servants, chandeliers, and glass walls, Annie was still alone. Even her father, once her protector, seemed distant now a man weighed down by shadows she could not name. Only Daniel, her boyfriend, brought a smile to her face. He was the opposite of her world: simple, sincere, poor in possessions but rich in heart. But even Daniel’s love could not silence the quiet fears that followed Annie to bed each night. That night, she closed her eyes, praying for rest, but sleep carried her somewhere darker. She found herself sitting in an old, dimly lit hall. The air was heavy, thick with the smell of smoke and candle wax. People around her swayed as they whispered strange words she did not understand. Their voices rose and fell like a chant, and Annie’s skin crawled. At the front, a man held a glass bottle. At first, she thought it was empty, but then something inside shifted a black shadow, writhing, alive. Her heart raced. She wanted to look away, but her eyes were fixed. Then she heard it. “Annie… Annie… Annie…” The whispers slithered into her ears, wrapping around her heart. She spun around, but no one looked at her. They kept chanting, eyes shut, lost in their ritual. Her legs trembled as she tried to rise, but the floor felt heavy, as though invisible chains bound her. And then she saw it another bottle in the corner, pulsing like a living heart. Her eyes widened. Inside it, faint but unmistakable, was her father’s face. His lips moved, begging for help she couldn’t give. “Papa!” Annie’s voice broke, but no sound left her mouth. The man at the front turned. His eyes found hers in the crowd, piercing, deliberate. He smiled slow, cold, knowing. Annie’s body froze. She couldn’t scream. She couldn’t run. And then, in the suffocating silence, a voice whispered close to her ear, so close she felt its breath: “You are already ours.” Annie screamed but this time the sound ripped from her chest. She sat up in her bed, drenched in sweat, her breath shaking. Her room was quiet, her silk curtains swaying gently in the night breeze. It was only a dream. But Annie knew deep inside: dreams like this weren’t ordinary. They were warnings. And the worst part? For the first time, she realized maybe her father was trapped in something far darker than she had ever imagined.
