Chapter 1
Olivia
I sat on the edge of the bed and stared out the window. I really couldn’t tell you what was outside, as I was lost in my own thoughts. I could hear the buzzing of noise downstairs as the people who had known my mom were sharing stories. Stories about the most amazing woman I have ever met. Even though Dad left us, she never floundered. She stood tall, never giving up when life got too hard. She worked two jobs. One was to keep a roof over our heads. The second was to help me with my education. I am pretty smart. I graduated high school at 10 years old. I graduated college with a business degree at 13. I received my master’s at 15 and opened my first business. Mom stopped working two jobs then and came to work with me. She handled a lot so that I could finish my doctorate in Business Administration. I know - crazy, right? Even crazier is that my 17th birthday is tomorrow. See, I have an eidetic memory. I can remember every word I have ever read and every picture I have ever seen. The problem with that is that I cannot get the image of my dead mother out of my head. So, I am sitting on the edge of the bed staring out of a window instead.
“Livvy?” a voice whispered from the doorway.
“Yes?”
“There are a couple of men downstairs looking for you. One of them says that he is your Dad.” Morgan replied. Morgan and I have been friends since we were in diapers. Her parents were second parents to me and I know Morgan had felt the same about my Mom. We were constantly together and running wild in one house or the other.
“He sure does have some nerve showing up here now.” I replied, clenching my teeth together and the thought that the man wasn’t dead. I hadn’t heard from him since the day he left. We had no idea what happened to him and after a while I hadn’t cared. I slowly stood up. “Well, I guess I had better come down then, shouldn’t I?”
Morgan and I slowly descended the stairs. The voices that a few minutes ago were sharing stories about my mom, were now hushed. All eyes were on me as I stopped in front of the two men who waited by the door.
“So, you aren’t dead.”, I said to my father.
“That is the first thing you say to your father?”
“Father is such an incredible term. You are more of a deadbeat dad, don’t you think? You left mom and me alone. You walked out of the door and never looked back to see the young girl sitting in the window waiting for her Daddy. You took the money in the bank account and left your child, and the woman who gave birth to her, without any way of getting food or basic necessities. You never called, you never wrote. You disappeared and you wonder why I thought that you were dead? You show up at the memorial for my mother. The woman who stayed, raised me, supported me, worked two jobs for me, and you want what? A parade?”
“Livvy…” Morgan started as she put a hand on my back.
“What Morgan? What the hell can he want now?”
“Listen Livvy..” my Dad started.
“No!” I screamed. “You don’t get to call me by my nickname. You don’t get to come here and make today, a day about MY MOTHER, about you!”
“I am not hear to make it about me. I am here for you.”, he said.
“For me? Why? You weren’t here for me for the last 14 years. Why now?” I asked.
“You are a minor. You will need to live with your next of kin. I am here to take you with me.”, he answered matter-of-factly. I began to laugh. I laughed and laughed until tears were streaming out of my eyes.
“I am not sure what is so funny Ms. Carmichael.” the other man said.
“My last name is not Carmichael. It is Matthews.” I said as I began to sober up. “And you are?”
“I am Adrian Drake. I am your father’s lawyer.”, he responded.
“Well, Mr. Drake. I would say it is a pleasure to meet you, but as you came with him - I cannot and will not lie. Please take your client and get the hell out of my house.”
“Ms. Carmi - I mean Miss Matthews. Your father is correct. You are a minor and will need to be placed with your next of kin. While you may not be happy about it, it will happen.”
“No it won’t. You see Mr. Drake, I am emancipated. I do not have to go anywhere with that man. Morgan? Can you get Pops for me?” Morgan nodded her head and rushed to find her father.
“Who is Pops?” my Dad asked.
“He is Morgan’s father and the only man who currently holds a father title for me. He helped raise me. He helped teach me. He is also the best damn lawyer in the state. He is the State Attorney General.” I replied as Morgan and her father came over to me.
“Livvy love. What is all this about?” Pops asked.
“Pops, this man is my biological father. And this is Mr. Drake. He is a lawyer. They came here to tell me that I will be leaving with them as I am a minor and will be required to go with my next of kin.” I answered Pops. Pops started laughing.
“I am sorry gentlemen that you have come all this way for nothing. Livvy is correct. She is an emancipated minor and as such does not need to leave with her next of kin. The house is in her name as well. So, if you came here looking for a windfall, you came to the wrong place.
“How did you get emancipated, if you don’t mind me asking? You are 16.” Adrian asked.
“I am not sure it is any of your business, but I have just completed my Doctorate. I have an IQ of 192. I am not some simpering little girl that needs a man to save me. As the man who left, do me a favor? Leave again. The door is behind you, please use it.” I responded as I turned to walk away.
“Don’t you have questions for me? Don’t you want to know why I left?” my Dad asked. I turned and looked over my shoulder at him before replying.
“Not really.” I then turned back and walked away. Morgan followed me to the kitchen where I grabbed a bottle of water.
“You ok?” she asked.
“Not really. Can you do me a favor? Thank everyone for me, but ask that they leave? I cannot do anymore right now.”
“Absolutely. Just know - I am staying. I am not leaving you alone tonight. We don’t have to talk, we can sit in the dark, I don’t care. I am not leaving.” she replied as she placed her hands on her hips. This was her don’t mess with me stance. I laughed.
“Instead of the dark, why don’t we sit on the couch with some ice cream and get some work done?”
“Deal!” she replied before turning around and going to thank everyone and ask them to give me space. She was one of my most trusted assistants. She worked a flexible schedule due to school, but she was one of my most trusted employees. Working on some files would take my mind off of what happened today. Hopefully, it would be the last time I would see my biological father.
