Chapter 4

Olivia Morgan and I walked into the lawyer's office with our arms linked. We had spent last night going over all of the logistics for me leaving for Black Mountain for a few weeks. Morgan would accompany me for the weekend before coming back for her finals. Then, she would handle the fort from the office with me remote. She would return for the grand opening. "You good?" Morgan asked. "Yeah, why?" "You went quiet on me. Sometimes I get nervous when you get quiet." she joked. I smiled at her. She has been my rock these last few weeks and I don't know what I would do without her. "I am fine. I promise. Just thinking about leaving and if I have covered everything." "If you have missed something, which I doubt, we will handle it. I promise.", Morgan replied. "I know. I think it was just my way of not thinking about what comes next. I don't know what I am going to do without her Morgan." "She raised you to be a strong, independent woman. She would expect you to mourn, but not to drown yourself in sorrow. She was so proud of you and your success. Continue doing what you love. Find love and happiness and make me an Auntie." I burst out laughing. For me, finding love was so far down on the to do list, it was absent. "Miss Matthews?" a voice called from behind me. I turned and saw a well dressed woman in a neat suit standing with her hands clasped. "Yes?" "Good morning Miss Matthews. I am Sabrina Lockhart, a paralegal here. I wanted to express my deepest condolences. Your mom was an incredible woman and she will be missed very much." "Thank you Miss Lockhart. I appreciate it." "No thanks necessary. Unfortunately, Mr. Brown is not able to be here this morning as his wife just went into labor. Mr. Drake will be filling in for him for the reading of your mother's will. If you could follow me?" She turned and made her way to a long hallway. Morgan and I followed her. We walked the entire length of the hall until we reached the large set of double doors at the end. Miss Lockhart walked to the door and knocked. When she received a summons, she announced us and held the door for us. Morgan and I walked into the office and I stopped in my tracks. Shock was vibrating throughout my body. Not only was my biological father here, but others. I looked around the room. I walked towards Morgan's parents and gave them hugs before turning towards Adrian Drake. "Mr. Drake. It seems we meet again." I said to him. "Welcome Miss Matthews. Please have a seat. As you should have been made aware, Mr. Brown...." "Is welcoming his new child. Yes, Miss Lockhart did just notify us. Could you please introduce me to the others here today?", I asked. "You already know Mr. & Mrs. Bannon as well as your father." "Please call him by his name. He is no father of mine." I responded. The woman beside my father gasped and I turned to look at her. "And you are?" "I am Cindy Carmichael. Your stepmother.", she said. "I am not sure if I should congratulate you or extend my condolences." "Enough Olivia." my dad said. I turned towards him but felt myself held in the arms of someone else. "Don't do this Livvy. Not today." Pop's voice whispered in my ear. He released me when I nodded my head. I made my way to the chair closest to the Bannons. "Ok. We are here to listen to the Last Will and Testament of Cassidy Leigh Matthews. Do you want me to read the whole verbiage or just the bequeaths?" "Just the bequeaths please. The less time we are here, the better." I responded. "Ok, here we go. I have never read this before as Ms. Matthews was not my client. If there are questions, I can have Mr. Brown contact you when he returns to the office. To Mr. William Carmichael. I bequeath envelope #1. May it give you answers and closure. If not, I do not care as you didn't care when you left me. To Mrs. Tatiana Bannon, the sister of my heart and Mr. Peter Bannon, the brother of my heart. I cannot express my gratitude for all the love and support you have given to Livvy and me. You have been there every day for us both and I am so very grateful. For this purpose, I bequeath you an all-inclusive two-week trip to the Maldives. May you spend time enjoying the sun and each other. Remember. Life is short. Grab each other, and life, and not only hold on, but enjoy it. Take care of Livvy for me. I bequeath her to you as well. I know that she is a capable young woman who is emancipated, but take care of her for me anyway. You are just as much her parents as I am. "To Morgan Bannon, the daughter of my heart. I leave you Betty. She is fully paid off and all yours baby girl. I know you will love her as much as I do. I also bequeath you my emerald jewelry set. When I bought it I had a vision of you wearing it in your wedding. If you want to wear something different, I understand, but I knew the emeralds were made for you. Love them and when you wear them, think of me and know that I love you very much. Lastly, I bequeath you 20 of my shares in Sassy. You and Livvy have always been a partnership. Don't let that change. Be the partner she needs you to be. She is very capable, but with you by her side, I know that there is no limit on what the two of you can accomplish. I love you baby girl." Morgan and I turned to each other and embraced. We were both sobbing at this point. My mom purchased her dream car, a shiny cherry red Mazda Miata convertible, with our first huge dividend from Sassy. I couldn't understand the glee she had, but Morgan did. She jumped in circles with my mom and squealed while yelling "Shotgun!" and running to the passenger seat. The memory brought a smile to my face and I leaned back and looked at her. "You don't mind?" Morgan whispered. "Of course not! Don't be silly! The way the two of you loved that car, I am glad Betty is going to you. Also, I was there the day she bought the emeralds. She looked at me and said they would be perfect for you. She knew what she was doing." "But your company shares. They should be yours!" she sobbed. I wiped the tears from her face. "Mom was right there too. You have been my partner since diapers. You have been there every step of the way. I couldn't think of a better partner than you." I whispered back to her. She cried harder and hugged me again. Mama T came over and took Morgan from me so I could pay attention to Mr. Drake. "Are you ready to continue or do you need a moment?" Adrian asked. "Let's keep going." I replied.
