Prologue
Eve had grown accustomed to blending into the background. It was safer that way. With every transfer to a new school, she had learned to keep her head low and her mouth shut, avoiding the eyes that judged her worn-out clothes and hand-me-down books. Being invisible was better than being ridiculed.
But no matter how hard she tried, she could never quite escape the whispers, the snickers, and the stares. At every school, it was the same. A shy, timid girl from a poor background never stood a chance. And so, Eve had come to expect the isolation. It was easier to disappear than to hope for friendships.
Today was no different. As she introduced herself to her new class, her voice barely above a whisper, she felt the weight of their gazes on her. Her heart pounded in her chest as she quickly took her seat, wishing for the earth to swallow her whole.
Then, something unexpected happened.
Instead of the usual cold indifference or mocking glances, her classmates approached her—smiling. They greeted her warmly, asking about her life, her interests. For the first time in a long while, Eve wasn’t invisible. But instead of feeling comforted, she felt an overwhelming surge of panic. Her hands trembled, her throat tightened, and she could feel her mind spinning.
She didn’t know how to respond. The warmth they offered felt alien to her, and the pressure of their attention made it hard to breathe. Her thoughts raced as anxiety took over. Before she knew it, she was running.
She dashed out of the classroom, her heart pounding in her ears, leaving her stunned classmates behind. Guilt and shame gnawed at her as she sprinted down the empty hallway. Why couldn’t she just act normal? Why couldn’t she accept their kindness?
In her frantic escape, she collided with something someone. Eve stumbled back and fell to the ground, her breath catching as she looked up. A tall figure towered over her, unmoving. He hadn’t even flinched from the impact.
She froze, wide-eyed, as the boy looked down at her, his face unreadable. For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The air between them was thick with silence, as if the world had paused around them. Eve’s heart raced, but this time it wasn’t from fear, it was something else.
And that was the moment everything began to change.
They would cross paths again, and soon they’d discover their lives were intertwined in ways neither of them could have imagined. What started as an awkward collision would slowly evolve into something deeper, abond neither of them had anticipated. But for now, Eve could only stare up at the boy who would soon change her world, unaware of the path that lay ahead.
