Chapter 1: Baron Kane
The bright moon hung high in the night sky, casting its luminous glow into the magnificent room.
The wide-open window allowed a cold gust of wind to blow in, causing the oil lamp on the table to flicker intermittently.
Lying beside an overturned chair was a young nobleman dressed in splendid attire.
At this moment, his delicate face appeared pale, his eyes tightly closed, and his lips turned purple.
An arrow had audaciously pierced through his chest, pointing directly at his heart.
Cough, cough...
Suddenly, the young man coughed violently, awakening from his stupor. He opened his eyes, gazing around in confusion, realizing he was no longer in a familiar setting.
"Where am I?"
"Weren't I at the detective agency? Ugh..."
Memories surged into his mind like a tidal wave. Kane Gerard was the name of this body.
As a newly appointed baron, he should have had a promising future. However, an unexpected assassination attempt had ended his life this very night.
At that moment, Su Ming from the Blue Star transmigrated into his body.
Unluckily, Su Ming had merely taken a nap in his detective agency and woke up to find himself in this situation.
Struggling to stand, Su Ming felt a sharp pain in his chest. He then remembered the arrow still lodged in his body.
"Damn it, I forgot about this."
Staring at the arrow embedded in his chest, Su Ming was uncertain about what to do. The intensifying pain reminded him that he had to make a choice: remove the arrow or endure the pain.
After hesitating for a moment, Su Ming took a deep breath, gritted his teeth, and pulled out the arrow.
Immediately, golden-red blood gushed out following the arrow, and Su Ming collapsed to the ground.
An indescribable pain surged through his body, as if his strength was draining away along with the blood the moment he pulled out the arrow.
Clutching his bleeding chest, Su Ming slowly went from kneeling to lying down. Eventually, he lost all strength and fell to the ground, everything before his eyes becoming blurry.
However, his will to survive continuously reminded him that he couldn't just fall asleep like this.
Perhaps even the gods were moved by his determination. Under his unwavering will, his fluttering eyelids gradually opened, and an inexplicable comfort surged from his heart throughout his body.
Feeling no more pain, Su Ming relaxed his mind in this comfort and gradually fell asleep.
......
Morning.
As the bright sunlight streamed into the room, a knocking sound echoed.
Knock, knock, knock.
"Baron Kane."
Maintaining the position from last night, Su Ming, or rather Kane, opened his eyes once more.
He struggled to get up from the floor, wiping his somewhat moist cheeks. It was then that he noticed his entire body was covered in fresh blood.
What puzzled Kane, however, was that his blood was mixed with a hint of gold. The blood, which should have dried or coagulated by now, was dripping from him like flowing water.
Suddenly, as if recalling something, Kane tore open his tattered shirt.
Looking at his chest, he wore an expression of confirmation.
The blood hole left from pulling out the arrow had already healed, leaving only a grim scar behind.
It seems his body underwent some changes last night.
Kane was acutely aware that even with the first-tier initial strength he remembered having, he couldn't possibly possess such abilities.
Looking at the large pool of fresh blood on the floor, Kane shook his head in self-mockery. Yes, anyone who could lose this much blood and still be fine was definitely not normal.
At that moment, a familiar voice came from outside the door.
"Baron Kane?"
Recognizing the voice, Kane knew it was his personal valet, Enkin, outside.
Having grown up alongside Kane, Enkin was deeply trusted by him.
When he was uncertain whether the assassin came from inside or outside the castle, Enkin was the person Kane trusted the most.
Immediately, Kane opened the door and pulled Enkin inside.
"Baron Kane, what happened to you?" Seeing Kane covered in blood, Enkin asked anxiously.
Kane patted Enkin's shoulder, signaling him to calm down, and said, "Enkin, I'm fine. Don't ask too much. Just clean up here, and remember to keep the arrow."
Seeing Kane unwilling to elaborate, Enkin suppressed his curiosity and began cleaning up.
On the other side, having given his instructions, Kane went to the bathroom alone to clean up.
After freshening up, Kane walked out of the room and was led by another maid to the dining hall.
Once seated, servants waiting on the side began serving breakfast, and the steward, Jess, walked in.
In the original owner's memories, this steward, Jess, had been assisting the family since the previous baron's time and was highly experienced.
"Baron Kane, the warm red wine from Piescastle is ready for you. Shall I serve it now?"
"Go ahead, Jess."
"As you wish, Baron Kane."
Jess took the red wine from the servant and slowly poured it into Kane's glass.
Meanwhile, Kane observed the expressions of everyone present, but whether it was Jess or the others, they all seemed as usual.
It appeared they were unaware of his assassination attempt. Could the assassin be from outside the castle?
...
After breakfast, Kane, following the habits of the original owner, went to the training ground outside the castle for his daily morning practice.
Swinging his longsword absentmindedly, Kane struck at the training dummy.
While trying to maintain the daily routine of the original owner, Kane pondered incessantly about who would want to assassinate him at this critical juncture.
Was it Jess? Clearly not, as the steward of the castle, he had no reason to assassinate him.
Could it be Marcus? Kane envisioned a robust and steady figure, but he shook his head immediately. As his household's sworn knight, Marcus wouldn't make such an unwise choice.
Nor could it be Catherine. She, like Marcus, was nurtured by his household and would face significant repercussions if he were to fall.
Lowering his longsword and taking the towel handed to him by a servant, Kane wiped the sweat from his forehead. He continued to think that apart from everyone within the castle, the only possibility was an external assassin.
The morning practice quickly concluded, and Kane returned to his study.
The study had already been cleaned by Enkin, who stood aside and handed the weapon, an arrow, to Kane.
Taking the arrow, Kane instructed, "Enkin, remember not to disclose anything that happened here."
Enkin nodded, "Yes, I understand, Baron Kane." He then respectfully exited the study.
Once the door was closed, Kane carefully examined the arrow. The tail end had a protrusion, and the fletching, which should have been at the end, was located above this part—a typical crossbow bolt design.
Moreover, the design of the bolt was common and unremarkable, indicating the assassin didn't want to give away their identity.
Putting down the arrow, Kane approached the window. Assuming his earlier deductions were correct, the assassin likely entered from the outside.
The window of the study was immaculate, cleaned daily by the servants. However, Kane noticed something suspicious below the window.
Looking down, the massive stone walls supported the entire castle. Yet, Kane observed one or two bricks below the window that seemed out of place.
They were all missing a corner, and the missing parts were precisely aligned with both sides of the window.
This minor detail, if not for Kane's previous profession in his past life, would certainly not have been noticed by an ordinary person.
Sure enough, as he suspected, the assassin entered from the outside.
To bypass the castle's patrols multiple times and effortlessly climb the castle walls to assassinate him, the culprit must be an extraordinary individual, perhaps even of a higher rank than himself.
This realization gave Kane a slight headache. Extraordinary individuals possess unique powers that regular soldiers cannot contend with.
Moreover, with the adversary hidden in the shadows and himself in the light, once they discover he's still alive, they will undoubtedly attempt another assassination.
Kane needed to formulate a plan before the assassin struck again.
