Chapter 1 One too many
Sadie's POV
Rain poured down the outside of the bus window. My stupid car was broken again, and Derek wasn't picking up his cell phone. I'm not sure why that man even has a phone. He never bothers to answer the thing. I tried one more time just in case.
RING....RING....RING... "You've reached Derek, I can't get to the phone, leave a message, I'll ring you back." The voice message says back to me.
S: Hey, my car won't start again, I'm going to catch the bus home.
D: ....
Well ok then. The bus rolled to a stop under an awning. Not much protection from the rain, but better than nothing, I guess. Derek's apartment was still about four blocks away but this was as close as the bus lines ran in this town. I pulled my light jacket tighter around myself and started walking down the street, sticking as close to the buildings as possible to avoid the rain. Not perfect and passing cars still sprayed water, but what are you going to do? By the time I made it to the front of Derek's building, I was pretty much soaked through. I punched in the code and opened the door.
"Good Evening Ms. Sadie" Bernard Carter, the lobbyman came over to me." Mr. Bennett didn't mention you were coming today."
"Derek didn't know I was coming, my car broke down, and I had to take the bus, is he upstairs?" I ask the older man "He didn't answer his phone earlier I thought maybe he was in a meeting."
"Ummm... Mr Bennett came in this afternoon, and I haven't seen him leave again." Bernard answers, not meeting my eyes. "Perhaps I could call you a cab back to your living quarters."
"Nonsense Bernard, if Derek is here, I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I go up." We've been dating for seven months, it's not like this is the first time I've been here in the middle of the day. I start toward the bank of elevators at the far end of the room.
Bernard steps in my path once more "Ms. Sadie, at least let me call up."
"I've tried Bernard. He isn't bothering to answer his phone, I want to see my boyfriend. I've had kind of a s**t day now if you'd please move." I skirt around Bernard and enter the elevator. I hit the button for the sixth floor. I sigh and lean against the back as the doors close and I'm whisked up into the air.
********
The elevator opens on the sixth floor. I step out and turn right. I scan the doors on the left hand side... 6115 , I reach up to knock and the the door pushes easily open, as if the last person to enter didn't fully close it. I step into the apartment and freeze. The apartment is an open floor plan. The front door opens to a gorgeous top-of-the-line kitchen to the left and a spacious living room with floor-to-ceiling windows and front row view of my boyfriend f*****g the s**t out of some other GUY over the back of the couch.
