The sun had barely risen over the Ash Empire, casting its warm glow across the annual carnival set up to honor the First Emperor, Sir Pagon Skylar. It was an occasion of celebration, with colorful tents and attractions spread throughout the fairgrounds, a testament to the empire's history and culture.
The carnival featured a wide array of attractions – from thrilling bull-riding spectacles to enchanting sculpture artists, rides that spun through the air, and an array of food stalls offering delicious treats that tempted every palate. It was a day for people of all ages to enjoy.
Amidst the cheerful crowds, Liam and Jaime arrived at the carnival earlier than the designated meeting time with Zargel. Their goal was to lose themselves in the festivities, to momentarily set aside the weight of their mission and experience the carnival like any other young people their age.
As they roamed the lively fairgrounds, a carefree spirit overcame them. They shared laughs, sampled the carnival treats, and enjoyed the spectacle of the bustling crowds. It was a brief respite from their heavier burdens.
In time, they reached a quiet corner of the carnival, away from the entrance, where a majestic tree stood, its roots forming a makeshift seat. There, they discovered Zargel, reclining on the tree trunk, waiting patiently for their arrival.
Liam, slightly puzzled by Zargel's early presence, questioned, "Weren't we supposed to meet later?" He continued, "And why are you here? You should've waited at the designated spot for our meeting."
Zargel responded with a playful demeanor, "Relax, kid. I knew you two needed some time to unwind. You don't want to enjoy the carnival like other regular kids your age?"
Liam was about to protest, but Jaime seemed to side with Zargel. He recognized the wisdom in taking a break. "Sir Zargel is right," Jaime remarked, "We should take some time for ourselves and conserve our strength for training and studies."
With Jaime and Zargel united in their suggestion, Liam reluctantly agreed. They couldn't deny the allure of the carnival and the rare opportunity to experience a day of carefree joy.
As they made their way toward the bustling heart of the carnival, they encountered a scene that marred the festive atmosphere. A group of noble children, aged around 15 or 16, clad in garments that proclaimed their noble heritage, encircled three commoner children of the same age. The nobles heckled and taunted them with derogatory slurs, targeting their humble backgrounds.
Among the crowd of noble children, a striking figure stood out. A girl with blonde hair and shimmering blue eyes, radiating beauty and elegance. Zargel observed, "She seems to be the ringleader of this crowd. Claire Stephen, next in line for family head of the Stephen family."
Jaime added, "She attends the same academy as Liam and me. It's a shame, such outer beauty concealing such shallow ideals of oppressing the weak."
Zargel, with a mixture of frustration and determination in his voice, muttered, "These vermin of noble blood, always seeking to exploit their privilege."
In the heart of the carnival, amidst the revelry, a confrontation had arisen, one that Liam, Jaime, and Zargel couldn't ignore.
