Chapter 2

Kaila's Pov Small jolts of electricity randomly sparked in my chest, the butterflies in my belly were having a carnival, my body was expecting, and my soul was waiting impatiently to be in the arms of the man that I love. My best friend, my boyfriend, my mate, my Jacob Ross. We've been friends since we were seven and one month ago we found out that we are mates. Sitting in this chair impatiently waiting for the maid to finish my pedicure so I can be in the arms of the man I love, the only man that my wolf accepts. "I can see someone is all dressed up" I recognized my mother's voice without opening my eyes. I like to close my eyes when I'm daydreaming of my super hot boyfriend, who is arriving from his business trip today after three weeks. "Greetings Your Majesty" The maid greeted and I realized my mom wasn't just passing by my chamber. My eyelids flickered open; she was lost in the box of chemicals the maid carried around for pedicures. "Mom, I thought you and Dad had pack meetings to attend together?" I asked surprised that she was here. "Well, the meeting was just for the king's, no Luna's present" her eyes slowly returning to me. "Why are you all dressed up?" Confusion dripping from her words, "And why are you smiling?" Still confused. I tried to stop but I couldn't, how could I, a small smile began to grow on her lips too. "Jacob is coming back today" I was bursting with excitement. Her face fell, why?. "What's wrong?" My smile disappeared too. "That boy acts a certain way I don't like the way he behaves, he's too concerned about material things and........". "Mom please!" I quickly interrupted "I love him and he loves me too" I felt the maids grip on my legs loosen, I looked down and she was done, my toes were perfectly gelled. "Love is never enough Kaila, I think you both should sit and have a conversation about your relationship, I mean he doesn't seem serious with you and.....". "Mom, I have to go now" I didn't wait for her to continue, heaven knows my soul was with Jacob already, and being here with my mom would only waste my time and possibly make me angry. "Be careful!" Her voice echoed as I scurried down the stairs. "Okay," I shouted back. **At Jacob's house** "Nothing beats a good surprise", My wolf whispered to me as I quietly walked into Jacobs's house. "I know, right?" I laughed, placing the bouquet of flowers and bottle of champagne on the table. The room was dark, obviously, he hadn't come from the airport, he promised to call when he lands but he hadn't. "I'm just going to hide here and surprise him when he enters", I jumped excitedly. His scent lingered through my nostrils as I paced the living room before hiding; it seemed as if he was here, and my skin crawled. Just when I thought I was alone, I heard sounds, I froze at first, but as the sounds were getting closer I knew I needed to hide. The kitchen swung open, it was in clear sight from the chair I was behind, just kneeling there the sight my eyes beheld sent a stinging sensation throughout my body. "She's all over me, I mean, I can't keep lying that I'm on a business trip just to avoid her" He paused for a bit, in those few seconds I could hear my heart pounding in my chest and sweat soaked my armpit. “Getting married to Ashley would bring me more business deals and make me even wealthier, do you know the connections I can get with Ashley's father?” My mind was racing, I know Ashley, he told me that they are just friends, so why is he talking about marrying her? He supposed to marry me! I'm his mate! That's how things work around here. "I don't love Kaila, I never have, and I don't think I ever will. She's just good company, but she's always ahead of herself; it's choking, I can't lie. Today it ends, I don't think I can have her continue......". "Jacob!". I didn't give my brain permission to stand, but his words felt like a dagger stabbing and slicing my heart. "f**k! Kaila, what are you doing here?" He flinched; he was surprised. One part of me wanted to run into his arms and scream welcome, but I didn't, I couldn't, that part of me was bleeding from the deep razor cut of his words. "How did you get in here?" He flicked the switch and the light came on, the once dark living room became brightly lit, illuminating his handsomeness and heavenliness. "Let me call you back" he quickly whispered into his phone, dropping his hands my eyes unintentionally wandered over to his wide full chest, and bare n*****s. But I remained in the corner, hoping for the light to go back off so I can remain in the darkness. My heart was pounding heavily against my chest, my head felt light, and my whole body did. My fingers dug into the wooden frame of the chair for support as the whole room began to spin. "How did you get in here?" There was still surprise in his eyes, and although my vision was blurry, I could easily pick the disgust hiding in his eyes. "I..have...I....your keys.....I". "Look, Kaila, I don't know what you heard but...". Yes! There it was, he was going to take back his words, my knees buckled and I took a step closer to him. He retreated. "There's no easy way to do this, I don't know how much you've overheard but" There it was again, silence. It felt like demons were dancing on my head and the butterflies in my stomach all dropped dead and gave me a belly ache, hot tears gathered at the brink of my eyelids. "Jacob", I blinked, and my face became wet. "What are you...". "I Jacob Ross...". No! No! No! "Reject you, Kaila Jordan, daughter of Alpha Jordan, princess of the Darkstone pack, as my mate!" He dropped the bombshell. My heart ripped inside my chest, I couldn't feel wolf anymore. "Please!" Carefully escaped my lips. Without sparing me another glance, he turned to leave, stopped at the door "Leave my keys, and please be gone before I return!" It was an advice. The dark walls of the room seemed to close in on me, my head felt hot and my tears couldn't stop pouring out of my eyes, I crashed to the floor. The pain stung my chest and my whole body. I tried to scream, but I couldn't. I had just been rejected by the only man I ever loved, why me?. I couldn't wrap my head around it at first, I smacked myself against the cold floor until the screams couldn't be suppressed, I screamed. I screamed so hard my lungs hurt, everywhere hurt, I was going mad. Nothing made sense. I sprang up to my feet, not thinking about anything but the pain that flowed through my veins, and I ran. I left my car and found a bush path. No one was chasing me, but I kept running like Jacobs's words would catch up with me and start stinging me afresh. The pain clawed at my chest like a wild animal, sharp and relentless. Each breath was a jagged gasp. The weight of his words crushed me, and the air itself seemed to suffocate me. The silver glint of wolfsbane on the ground should’ve made me stop. But I couldn’t bring myself to care. The wolfsbane was poisonous to wolf, but I kept running. I stepped on it, and in that second, there was nothing, no feeling, no colour, no light, just darkness.
