Chapter Seven

RAYLEE POV I slowly started edging toward the big black wolf. As he notices my slow approach, he sits back up and c***s his head to the side. From my crouched position I can see what he is doing but am not making direct eye contact. He shifts his weight a little and I stop moving. When he appears to be settled, I start my approach again. When I am only a few meters away, I slowly raise my hand palm up and balance the items on it. I take a big breath and wait. I see the wolf stand and gingerly approach me when he is only a foot away, he leans forward and sniffs at my hand and the items on them. He huffs, and I go rigid, then he nudges my hand and even gives me a little lick. I released the breath I didn’t know I was holding and got down to my knees so I could get a closer look at his paw. I place the items in the dirt and gently lift his massive paw. It’s the same size as my hand and he is towering over me in my kneeling position. I honestly had no idea wolves got this big. As I turn his paw slowly assessing the damage, he pulls back a little and lets out a whine. “Oh-oh, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to hurt you.” I say quietly, pulling my hand away. After a few seconds, he nudges my hand with his nose. I take this as a sign to continue. “It’s kinda deep here, I might have to disinfect it and then wrap it in a loose bandage, you should be easily able to remove the bandage when I’m done.” It's then I realise I’m talking to the wolf like it understands me. I slowly and gently rip open one of the disinfectant wipes and gently rub it over his wounds. He pulls his paw away again and whimpers a little more strongly. I felt like he might have been telling me ‘That s**t hurts.’ I dropped the wipe and picked up the gauze and bandage. I place the gauze over the main wound and begin to gently wrap the bandage loosely around his paw. Once I’m done, he licks my hand. I went to get up off the ground when he nudged me, unsure what he wanted, I called out to Tate. “Um, any idea why he is nudging me? Every time I try to stand, he nudges me again and I end up back on the ground.” “Just sit down on your butt, with your legs crossed and see what he does.” comes the reply from behind me, so I do as he says. The wolf stands and slowly begins to circle me, brushing against me every so often. He eventually sits close beside me again and before I even have time to do or say anything, he drops his massive head in my lap. I gasp and hear a matching gasp from Maz. “Hey, Tate, do you think he would be OK with me patting his head? I know some animals don’t like it.” I yelled over my shoulder. I heard him chuckle. “Judging by the fact he has his head in your lap, I’d say he wouldn’t have a problem with that.” I lift my hand and gently place it on his head. He rose slightly to push his head further onto my hand. I slowly started to pat his massive head in my lap. After a few minutes, I heard a rumbling that sounded like a purr coming from his chest. I took this as a good sign and started to gently scratch behind his ears. The rumbling sound gets stronger. “Thank you.” I whispered. Even though I’m sure he doesn’t understand, he c***s his head slightly to look at me. “You will never understand what you did for me today, you saved my only child, thank you from the bottom of my heart.” I placed my lips gently on his massive head. He sits up suddenly and starts to lick my face. I was startled at first before I realised he was licking tears off my face. After he is finished, he stands, nudges his head against mine and turns to leave. Just before he limps out of view, I yell “Thank you, I hope I see you again before I go home.” He turns his head back, huffs once and is gone. The biggest grin is plastered on my face as I reach the others again. It’s then I realised Cor was not with them, I really wanted to share this with him. I frowned. “Hey Tate, where’s Cor?” “Oh, uh he was heading for the shower I think.” he said, without making eye contact. That’s weird. I sighed “OK, well can you tell him what happened, for me please?” “Sure, I’ll be heading back to the bunkhouse once I drop this light off. I’m sure he’ll be spewing because he missed all the action.” Maz and I head back to the house. “So crazy night huh.” Maz says out of the blue. I laughed "yeah you could say that again." When we got back, I sat and cuddled with Jada for a while, just needing reassurance before getting her bathed and in bed. Jada seems not to be suffering at all from the ordeal. I, on the other hand, once again dissolve into tears when Maz asks me how we are both doing. “I didn’t know what to do, Maz. I’ve never felt so helpless.” She hugs me and we both hear a gentle knock at the front door. Maz gets up, “That’ll be Corey, no doubt, I’ll let him in and wrangle my children into bed while you chat.” “Thanks, Maz.” I said, wiping my face with my shirt. COREY POV Conri was unusually restless after dinner, so I decided to sneak off and let him have a run. It’s been a few days since I let him out. I wandered into the bushland surrounding the property, striped and shifted. We shook out our fur and began to run, the gentle breeze blew through our fur and we could hear all the sounds of the animals hiding in the bush. After about an hour, we started to head back. As we got closer, Conri once again started to get agitated. “What’s going on with you? Why are you so agitated?” I asked him. “Something is wrong, our mate is distressed about something, we have to find our mate…NOW!” he picked up his pace and raced toward the residential part of the property. Suddenly I was hit by a strong scent…shit, Mountain Lion. I focused on my hearing and picked up several rapid heartbeats and voices. From what I could gather, Jada was in danger. I bounded through the clearing towards them and was able to get between Jada and the puma just as it was set to pounce. “Conri, I’m giving you full control, focus on the task at hand…getting rid of this Puma.” I told him sternly and handed over full control. Fighting other wolves, I could handle on my own as they are predictable, but this needs full natural instinct. Just as the fight begins, Conri is distracted by our mate yelling for her daughter. The Puma takes advantage and pounces on our back and all hell breaks loose. Thankfully, the fight doesn’t take long, and we manage to scare the puma away, but not before it gave us some decent damage to our front paw. Usually, this wouldn’t matter as I’d heal in a matter of seconds, but I learned at an early age I could ‘turn off’ my rapid healing when around humans so as to not make them suspicious. A bright light suddenly appears, and I see Tate wielding a spotlight. He spots me and I hear his voice in our head. “s**t Cor, are you OK? I had no idea it was you or what was even going on, for that matter. I just heard a ruckus and went running. Why aren’t you healed yet?” I turned towards the group and sat down, taking over full control from Conri to allow him to rest. “Yeah I’m OK, I have turned off my healing, it’s some weird thing I can do so as not to scare humans, just like how I can mind link all wolves. are Raylee and Jada ok?” I said as I lay down on the ground panting from both the pain and the effort exerted during the fight. “Yeah, they are fine, your girl here wants to come and tend to your wounds. I’ll give her a run down to make it seem real, but you gotta control your wolf so he doesn’t do anything crazy.” I couldn’t believe, despite just having a run-in with a wild animal, that my mate still wanted to come and help a supposed wild wolf. She followed all Tate’s instructions to a tee and I played along. I felt a little guilty that I’m keeping this from her, but at the same time, it’ll be nice to see how my mate reacts to my wolf side before I tell her about me. I’m pulled out of my thoughts when she moves my paw and causes pain. I whimper and she pulls away. I quickly realised and nudged her again so she would continue. The sparks of the mate bond are equally as strong in our wolf form and calmness washes over me from her touch, she cleans my wound and wraps it gently in a bandage. She tries to stand, thinking our interaction is finished, but I’m not ready to let her go just yet. I nudged her back down. Again I hear Tate’s voice in my head. “What do you want from her man?” “Just tell her to sit on the ground with her legs crossed, we just want to be close to her a minute, Conri hasn’t been this calm in ages.” I told him, and I nudged Raylee again as she tried to stand. Once she is sitting with her legs crossed, we stand and begin circling her, the smell of blueberry pie is so strong, we brush against her just to leave our scent on her and then we finally sit next to her and place our large head in her lap. This feels like home. A purr-like rumble comes from us sounding our contentment. Yeah, I know a big bad Alpha purring like a kitten, but that’s just the effect our mate has on us. “Thank you.” she suddenly whispers. I c****d my head at her. “You will never understand what you did for me today. You saved my only child, thank you from the bottom of my heart.” She kissed my head. Sparks shot off through my brain, but before I could fully enjoy the sensation I smelt her tears, I sat up and licked her tears away. I decide she needs me now back in my human form. So I nudged her forehead with mine and turned to leave. “Thank you, I hope I see you again before I go home.” She yelled at me. My mate wants to see my wolf again. This is a good sign. I huffed her way as a sign of acknowledgement and walked away into the darkness.
