Chapter 1
I rolled down the car window, the cool evening breeze hitting my face making me momentarily close my eyes. I took a deep breath, the all familiar sweet scent of flowers gracing my nose.
This is something I loved about this place, it brought a smile on my lips back then when life was cruel to me.
Opening my eyes, I gazed outside. Everything remained the same as it was five years ago when I left or should I say,
banished?
“ Alpha, are you alright?” My Beta, Valen, asked, his eyes sparing me a glance through the rear mirror.
I smiled.
“ Why wouldn't I? It feels good to be back here.” I replied, adjusting the mask covering half of my face.
“ Are you sure about your decision? If you don't want to go, I can attend the meeting in your stead. “ Valen offered but I shook my head.
“ No need. I can manage. As the Alpha of our pack, this is my responsibility. I can't run away.” I answered, taking another deep breath.
“ But… “
“ No buts valen. I knew that this day would come. Since I am already here, how can I run away?” I cut him off before he could complete his statement.
“ I am just worried that he will make things hard for you.” Valen defended.
“I understand your concern and I appreciate it. Tomorrow's meeting is very important to me, to us. We can't afford to be absent from the meeting.” I explained.
Coming back here was not something I was looking forward to but with the Alpha's meeting being scheduled here, there was nothing I could do.
Tomorrow's meeting is purposely arranged to discuss the way forward about the recent suspicious deaths of our race across the land. With wolves going feral and later turning forsaken, as the leaders of the pack, it was our responsibility to come up with measures to deal with the matter at hand.
When the incidents were reported, I had ignored it. After all, everything seemed okay in my pack. That's until two months ago when two important people in my life became victims of the plague.
“ You are right. Everything is for the pack.” Valen murmured but I did not fail to catch the hint of doubt in his voice.
Stepping down the car, my eyes scanned the packhouse which stood proudly before us. Nothing about the place changed but what about the people? Did they change or are they still the heartless monsters I left behind?
Looking around, different cars were parked indicating that most of the guests had already arrived.
The sound of footsteps approaching pulled my attention back. A maid stood before us with her head bowed.
I could recognize a maid when I saw one, after all, the uniform she wore was something I spent my years wearing in this pack.
“Greetings, I would lead you to your respective rooms.” She offered and I nodded, following behind her.
My room was on the first floor while Valen's was a floor higher.
“ Get some rest. The party will start at exactly seven. I'll pick you up.” Valen reminded me before walking away.
I smiled at him. I don't know what would have become of me if it wasn't for Valen and his family.. Five years ago, not only did I face rejection from my mate, he was cruel enough to banish me.
The man the moon goddess chose for me not only refused to acknowledge our bond, he deemed me unfit of being bonded to him.
“ You are just a mere maid, an omega. Do you think an Alpha like me can accept a loser and a weakling of unknown roots as my mate?” He spat those words to me, rubbing on my face the fact that I was some garbage, thrown away and picked up.
He didn't hesitate to show off his perfect Luna to me, the ideal mate who deserved to stay by his side.
The one destined to love and protect me made me feel helpless and hopeless.
I can still remember the smile that ghosted his lips as he banished me from the pack, sealing my fate.
Broken, I left the pack and ventured into the dangerous lands. I ended up in the hands of rogues. If it wasn't for Valen arriving in time and saving my ass, I would be dead and forgotten.
Shaking my head to clear the memory, I pushed the door open and entered the house.
The room screamed of opulence, as expected of one among the powerful packs in our region.
Compared to my pack, the Midnight pack was bigger and had many resources.
Despite their alpha being an asshole, he made sure to expand and develop his pack.
Since the party was set to start three hours later, I decided to take a stroll outside.
With my baggy shirt and oversized trouser, my disguise was unbreachable.
Stepping outside the room, I wandered around only to find myself in a familiar place.
Looking at the small cottage before me, the bitterness deeply buried inside me surged.
To force me out of this pack, a life was sacrificed. I get nightmares every time the scene replays in my mind.
I could see myself five years ago, holding my friend's lifeless body.
Kiran was the sister I never had growing up. After the mysterious death of the woman who raised me since I was young, I got to know Kiran. She took me under her, loved and took care of me although she was only three years older than me.
“ Leave this place and never look back. This is not the place for you. “ Those were the words she told me before she breathed her last in my arms.
In the past five years, the thirst for revenge has been a driving force, keeping me sane.
“ What are you doing here? This is a forbidden place.” A deep familiar voice sounded behind me. I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms.
