Chapter 2

I clenched my fists as I controlled the urge to slam them on his face. Alpha Asher. The man who I hated more than I had loved and my ex-mate. Although the mating bond was not severed completely and it was growing weak over time, it was still there, a cruel reminder of my biggest nightmare. Composing myself, I turned around to face him as a smile emerged on my lips. “ I got bored and decided to take a contemporary walk and appreciate the beauty here. After all, the pack is known as the most serene and beautiful among the neighbouring packs.” I replied. It was no lie. This pack was not only the biggest but also with the best climatic which contributed to the serenity of the place. He nodded. “ Don't wander around and get lost. You don't know what you might encounter next.” He said plainly but I could feel the lingering threat in his words. “ I'll keep that in mind.” I answered and the man turned to walk away only to halt after several steps. “ Do I know you from somewhere?” Asher suddenly asked, his words making my heart beat impossibly fast and dread filled me. After witnessing Asher's cruelty first hand, being alone with him in a deserted place was not something I was looking forward to. Suppressing the uneasy feeling crawling in the pit of my stomach, I smiled at him. “ How is that possible? How can you know a lowly person like me?” Casting one last glance at me, he nodded. “ You are right. She is dead, you can't be her.” And then… He walked away. Watching him walk away with poise and arrogance, I gritted my teeth in hatred. “Dead huh? So that was your aim all along?” Rejecting me, killing my only family and then banishing me from the pack was his design to push me to death huh? Too bad, even the king of Hades could not keep me around and pushed me back to life. Taking one last at the abandoned cottage, I turned around and left. I decided to take a walk around the pack before returning to my room to prepare for the party. Tonight, a special announcement will be made by Alpha Asher. Everything about this party was so mysterious but since the midnight pack was hosting the annual alpha meeting this time, no one questioned further or expressed their displeasure. Ten minutes to seven, the door to my room was knocked. I didn't need to ask who it was to know. Valen has always been time conscious and since he promised to pick me up, it could only be him. Lifting the trail of my dress, I walked to the door only to be surprised to see a maid standing by the door. “ Is this Alpha Rivera's room?” She asked and I nodded without thinking. She then passed me a well wrapped box. “ A guest instructed me to give this to you.” After saying that, she turned around and left without another word. I frowned. A guest gave it to me? Who could it be? Shoving that concern to the back of my mind, I carried the box inside. It was very light, as if it contained nothing inside. Placing it on the dressing table, I gently unwrapped it to reveal a silver mask. It was beautiful but what was even strange was the fact that it matched the colour of my dress. Inside the box was a small note. It read “Let's play a game.” The words were bold and neatly written revealing the owner's great calligraphy skills. Holding the note, my hands trembled as countless guesses flashed through my mind but no matter how many times I thought about it, no particular name came to mind. Another knock by the door sounded and I quickly put on the mask and walked to the door. This time, Valen stood outside. He was dressed impeccably in a black fitting suit. His long hair was tied into a ponytail but he had a frown on his face. “ When did you get that?” He asked, motioning the silver mask covering my face. I stiffened. I didn't even know why I agreed to wear the thing but since the deed was already done, there was no turning back. “Last minute changes.” I replied flatly. Of course, I wasn't going to inform Valen that a total stranger sent it to me and I stupidly decided to indulge him. Valen was never one to be reckless and the move I just made was total recklessness. “ It looks good on you.” Valen said, his eyes full of tenderness but I looked away guiltily. I have always been aware of Valen’s feelings towards me but chose to ignore it, just like I did. I could never give him what he wanted. Don't get me wrong, Valen is everything a woman would need in a man. He is caring and very attentive but that kind of care and affection was something out of my world. I could not bring myself to reject him but I could neither agree to be with him out of pity or gratitude. That would be too cruel of me. A look of hurt flashed in his eyes but he concealed it almost immediately. “ We should go, the party should begin anytime.” He said and I nodded. Valen led me to the hall where the party was held. After confirming our identity and invitation cards, the guards allowed us inside. It could be said that only a few invited guests were attending the party. As an alpha, I automatically received an invitation. The moment we stepped inside the hall, the atmosphere suddenly changed and the whole hall was envisioned by complete silence as all the eyes stared our way. With my head held high, I walked towards the table set for my pack. “ You did well.” Valen said immediately we stood before our table. My lips hooked up into a smile. My phone vibrated prompting me to retrieve it from the small pouch I was carrying. A message popped up from an unknown number. It read…
