Andrew climbed to the top of the cottage stairway. A line of flickering candlelight shone beneath Allison’s door. He hesitated outside her door but thought better of it and continued to his room. Allison heard his approach and looked up, alert and listening. Not until she heard Andrew’s door close did she return to her task.
