Hunter’s POV:
After Dan gave us the sedatives to help us sleep, I slept like a freaking baby. There is no way I would have been able to sleep without it. I know that Emily is out there, probably alone, but I was already sleep deprived and last time, it didn’t help that I never slept.
My alarm goes off and I don’t even let it get to the second beep before I am out of bed. I quickly run into the bathroom, brush my teeth and wash my face before running to my closet to throw on some clothes. I look over and Justin is putting his bedding in the corner of my closet. He is already dressed and ready. We nod at each other before exiting my room to meet up with everyone.
We head to the Alpha’s office, but I catch something out of the corner of my eye and stop. My whole body freezes and I squeeze my eyes shut.
“Oh, Huntie!” Vickey yells from the stairs.
“Oh God, just keep walking.” I whisper to Justin, whose face is red hot as he tries to look anywhere other than in her direction.
“She is in the direction we need to go.” He answers.
“Go downstairs, maybe she will go away with more people around.” I say as I practically skip down the stairs.
“Hunter! I am talking to you!” Vickey sounds like she is running down the stairs after us. “Hunter!” She grabs hold of my shoulder and yanks me around.
I saw her standing there, in the middle of the stairs, butt ass naked before I could shut my eyes in time. “God, Vickey! What are you doing naked?” I aggressively ask.
I try to make my way over to the railing so I don’t accidentally fall, but apparently Vickey made her way between me and the rails. My hand makes contact with her bare side and I jump backwards, opening my eyes so I don’t crash down the stairs.
“Vickey!” Justin yells. He immediately rushes over to me and we make our way to the rails. “What on Earth do you think you are doing?”
“I am trying to get Hunter’s attention.” She answers with an innocent voice. I can hear as other wolves are starting to whistle in our direction. “Umm…” Vickey sounds genuinely uncomfortable.
I stand up and take my shirt off. Without looking in her direction, I threw the shirt at her. “Please, for the love of the Moon Goddess, put the shirt on and go get dressed. I will discuss this with you later.” I growl.
I can hear her pulling the shirt over herself and cautiously open my eyes. She is covered, barely. She looked at me with a red face and tucks a strand of her hair behind her ear. “I just wanted your attention.” She says.
“Well, you got almost every guys attention now. What kind of stupid decision was that? Just because you are the Alpha’s daughter, doesn’t dismiss you from things like this, Vickey. You are not my mate, and you need to understand that. You, your sister, and Avena.” I growl. “Go get dressed. Burn the shirt when you’re done with it.”
I turn to start back up the stairs to go get myself another shirt and I can see the girls around me looking at me. I shake my head and force myself to keep going. I practically break my door when I get to my room just to go in and get another shirt when there is a knock on the door.
“What?” I yell over my shoulder. I had left the door open so whoever it was could definitely hear me.
“Whoa, what happened to you?” Avena said with a gentle voice.
“No, this will not be tolerated.” I growl and turn around. Of course, Avena is standing there in a sports bra and biker shorts. I quickly look at the ground as a string of curses escapes my mouth.
“What?” She tilts her head and takes a few steps towards me.
“Avena.” I growl. She reaches her hand out and touches my shoulder. “Avena!” I grab her wrist and look into her eyes with anger. “I have had it with you all. I will not allow you, or any one else to harass me this way. Your father will hear about this, and there will be something done about it. I am done with all of you trying to push your way onto me. You specifically.”
She looks at me a little more terrified than I have ever seen anyone be at me. “I don’t know what you mean, Hunter. I am here as a friend.”
“You, the one that tried to mark me when we were only teenagers. You, the one that showed up at my door naked, stealing my blanket, knowing that I had found my real mate. You, the one that has tried to get with me for as long as I can remember.” I let go of her wrist and she just stands there, looking at me.
“I can assure you, Hunter. That is not why I am here.” Her eyes are pleading with me to believe her.
“Then why are you here?” I demand.
“I just saw you walking to your room and almost breaking down the door. I just wanted to make sure that everything was alright.” She swallowed hard.
I feel a pinch of guilt in my chest. I have never gone off on anyone like that before, and I don’t like that I just did it like this.
I turn away from Avena and my fists tighten. “Get out.” I growl.
“Hunter…” She steps towards me and reaches her hand out.
“I said, get out!” I shout at her.
She gasps, retracting her hand and quickly exits my room. Justin stands outside the door and Avena nearly runs into him as she leaves the room. Justin shakes his head and enters the room.
“Man, these girls.” He says as he closes the door.
I’m so angry, I don’t even reply to him. I let out a roar in the room so loud the pictures on the walls shake. Justin falls to his knee and covers his ears. My roar turns into a growl and I fall to my knees with my hands to the ceiling.
“Why? Why are they coming after me so hard, when they know I have Emily?” I ask with no intention of getting an answer. I let out a long exhale and looked at the floor between my knees.
Justin stands on his feet and comes over beside me. He places his hand on my shoulder and stays there. He doesn’t say anything, but him being there is comforting to me.
This is why I chose him to be my second in charge. This is what I need behind me when I make hard decisions. I couldn’t do anything without him.
I take a deep breath and look up. Justin understands the queue and gives me a hand to help me up. He pulls me in for a quick embrace that I didn’t even realize that I needed until it was over.
“They are not in it for themselves. There has to be another reason they are doing this.” He assures me. “Whatever it is, they won’t be able to touch you once you are Alpha. I will be by your side, fighting them off. I am sure that they will have an issue once Emily hears about what they have done.”
A small chuckle rises from within me. I felt a small smile form on my face as I thought about Emily getting back at them. It makes me happy that she is so protective of us.
“Alright, I think we should actually get to Alpha’s office to discuss how to find Emily and get her back.” I say and Justin nods.
“Lead the way.” He rolls his shoulders and I grab hold of the door knob. I swing the door open only to get knocked in the face by a fist.
“Oh God! I am so sorry Hunter!” Al says with serenity. “We have a situation that needs the two of you.”
I rub my nose and give him a questioning look. “What is it?”
“Well, we are under attack. The alarm went off from the barrier spell that Elijah put up. Someone is siphoning the magic from it.” Al explains.
“So? Shouldn’t this be guard business?” Justin pops out from behind me. We all start walking down the hallway with a purpose.
“Normally, yes. But, the surveillance that we put in suggests that this is the hunters again.”
My body stiffens. The hunters that attacked us a few years ago. The only time I have ever actually killed someone. I have to force myself to move as it feels like my feet are in cement.
“The hunters? Are we sure?” Justin asks as if they didn’t notice my panicked mood.
“It looks like it. The spell could go down at any minute, and you two are the ones that dealt with them last time.” Al states.
“Don’t remind me.” I say looking around the hallway.
As we reach the stairs, the alarm in the compound goes off, indicating to everyone that we are under attack. The ones that are ready to fight immediately break into a sprint outside, and those that aren’t ready for that have fear written all over their faces.
I start to feel a panic attack coming on.
Oh God, please not now.
I start to breathe in and out with long, slow breaths. My hands start to shake uncontrollably. My vision begins to go black as everyone starts pushing me around with their own panic.
“Hunter!” I hear Justin shout and feel a hand on my arm. I can feel that I am being pulled but I can’t control my own body. The noises around me seem to encase my thoughts and I am unable to think straight. The screams as I am led somewhere.
“Hunter, listen to me!” Justin says. The noises have dwindled down and I can hear the sound of a light bulb buzzing. “I need you to focus on my voice.”
Justin sounds like he is standing directly in front of me, but I can’t see him.
“Hunter!” Justin snaps at me, and suddenly I am brought back to the situation. I shake my head and look at Justin, who is in fact directly in front of my face.
“Yeah, I’m here. I’m ready.” I say looking him in the eyes.
“You sure? I don’t need you out there if you’re not all there.” He looks between my eyes.
“Yeah, I’m sure. Let’s go get these fuckers.” My focus is now on the hunters. I have never liked them and their purpose.
Justin breaks into a dead sprint before I do, and we are outside in the action in a matter of seconds. There are wolves attacking people with crossbows, vampires holding onto the fur of some of them, and I can see witches throwing spells around like it’s confetti.
I lock eyes with the leader of the hunters as she rips an arrow out of one of the guards sides. I watch as her veins pop out along the outside of her eyes and she runs towards me. Justin gets in a ready stance beside me and I ball my fists up to get ready. Before I even realize it, I have been thrown through the air. I hit the ground hard, but I’m back on my feet within seconds. I race back over as I see Justin on the ground and stop the woman from hitting him. I throw her back a few feet and Justin quickly recovers. He stands beside me as he wipes the blood from his lip.
“Young Alpha.” She says as she stands up. “Nice to see you again.”
