Chapter Thirty-Five - A Secret No More

1344 Words
Rome POV The doctor came just in time. He was asking me a lot of questions instead of checking the damage already. Good thing Sam found an ice pack in the fridge. It somewhat numbs the pain from the punch. After making sure that it's just a bruise, not a biggie, the doc just put bandage and gave me pain killers if in-case my head would hurt later on. I didn't noticed that Sam was nowhere in sight. I was sure she was here awhile ago. Maybe she needed fresh air and went out. When I asked the doc and nurse if it was okay for me to leave they both nodded and went back to the doc's office to log the incident. Sigh. So much for being cared for. I was about to twist the door knob when I heard a conversation outside. The corridors were dimly lit, so slightly opening the door shouldn't hurt. I thought about closing it back and stay on the bed for awhile and wait 'till Sam comes back. But something urges me to eavesdrop to whoever was conversing outside. Sure enough I heard Vanessa's familiar voice. It seems like she was arguing with someone. I couldn't quite make out the face of Vanessa's company because the lighting was bad. I tried to open the door slightly wide so I could have a good look. There, I saw the guy who punched me in the face, only it wasn't a guy. It was a girl? A girl punched me in the face and caused this much damage? Wow! I shook my head to erase the amusement and to remind myself that I was looking at the girl who left a bruise on my mouth. If only the girl would turn my direction so I could see her face. Vanessa must have said her name but it barely register in my ear as they were a little further away. Almost to the next door from the clinic. The storage area, I suppose. They were arguing about what happened at the cafeteria. Vanessa said something about she's doing the investigation for Sam. Wait, where is Sam anyway? It was when the girl struggled to stop Vanessa from leaving that I was able to see her face, it was Zen. What's her problem? Although I feel sorry that she had to experience being called names by the pervert Robert. Sigh. Guess I have to talk to that guy again. He never learns. He should've let Zen be, otherwise this would've not happened. What Zen said next rang a bell in my ear. She said I stole her girl? Wait, Sam was her girl? Was she the one that Sam was so heart-broken about? How could I be so blind! Of course it's her! It was all too obvious! She's got Melody as her girlfriend. Last thing I knew about her is that she confessed her feelings to Sam before she and Melody became a couple. Plus, she and Sam were friends even before that! I covered my mouth to prevent myself from gasping. So she punched me because she feels jealous of me? Wow. I didn't even know that Sam and her had a past. Just then I heard another voice. It was Sam. She came out of nowhere! How long has she been there? How much has she heard? "There's no need." Sam said in a shakey voice. She's clearly upset. I wanted to run to her and comfort her. But I knew better than to stay put because this isn't the right time to do so. "Don't." She said. "If it pleases you to hurt someone I cared so much about, then it's best that you get out of my life." Wow. She cared for me? "I don't need you." That was the last thing that Sam said then I heard running footsteps. It sounded further away. I twisted the knob and went out of the clinic and looked to the right where Sam was, where Vanessa and Zen were. I looked at Sam running towards the exit. Then I focused my eyes on the two of them. Zen shot me a glare that could have dagers for all I know. I turned and walked the other way. Sam was right. This was enough for one day. I thought of going after her, but I know she needed space so I'm going to give it to her. I for one, didn't knew that Zen and Sam had a past. All along I thought it was another guy. The day dragged really slow. I haven't seen Sam all throughout the day. It got me worried. When class was finally over I received a text message from her. hey Rome. I wasn't feeling well so I went home. I hope you're okay though. How's that bruise? I replied right away. Hi, I'm fine. Really, Sam. Stop worrying so much. The doc gave me pain killers and just put bandage on the bruise because it was bleeding earlier. Other than that, I'm doing fine. Great! could you do me a small favor though? Sure Sam. Anything. What is it? I'm really at Vanessa's right now. Would you be able to tell her that and have her bring my backpack with her? Sure, Sam. You can come... if you want to. I also need to talk to you about something. Sure Sam, will do. I'll be the one to carry your bag instead of Vanessa. thanks Rome. You really are the best! :) See you later! Her last reply made me smile. I hurriedly went to their classroom to catch Vanessa. As soon as I spotted her I tapped her shoulder. "Can I talk to you in private?" She nodded. I made sure nobody would be listening to us, especially Zen. "Sam texted me not too long ago." I looked at her waiting for her response. "What about Sam?" She asked, concerned for her best friend. "She said she's at your house right now as we speak. She told me to tell you to go home right away and bring me with you." I looked around. "She said she needed to talk to me too." Vanessa just closed her eyes slightly and exhaled. "Yeah sure, Rome." She tried to smile. "Give me five minutes and we'll be off." "Sure." She went back to their classroom where I saw Zen still sitting at her seat covering her face with her palms. I wasn't sure if she was just crying or tired. Whatever Zen did to me, I wouldn't take it against her. After all, it was Robert's fault she had gone bersek. Five minutes had passed and Vanessa was already at the door. She motioned me to walk with her. I offered her to ride in the truck since we're heading to her home anyway. I wasn't surprised Sam had access to Vanessa's house. They're best friends of course. I found Sam curled up on the sofa in a fatal position. She was sleeping soundly. Vanessa and I entered the living room while she ran upstairs, to her room I suppose. I sat at a couch just across from Sam, observing her. She looked so delicate and innocent. But her eyes looked puffy indicating that she must've cried a lot. She began to stir when she heard Vanessa heading downstairs. Her eye lashes fluttered open and looked at me. She attempted to smile. "It's about time you woke up!" Said Vanessa. "Get up! This is a living room, not the sleeping room." She helped Sam sat up. "I never thought that you'd use the key I gave you." Vanessa continued. Sam just smiled at her. "You hungry Sammy girl?" Sam just nodded. "How about you, Rome?" Vanessa turned to me. "Just a glass of water would do fine." Vanessa stood up and disappeared in the kitchen. That leaves Sam and me alone in the room. The silence is deafening until she finally spoke. She looked down and stared at the marble floors. "So... Rome."
