We are very excited to have you in our team. See you on our first meeting on May 25, 2021 here at the Smithsonian Institution Offices. Welcome to the team! Dr. Anabeth Marcus Head Research Director I can feel the eyes staring at me here in the graduate student section of the library. Why? I may or may have not let out a high pitch squeal after I read my acceptance letter. I was in a rush to get to my morning class and only had time to grab my mails as I go. My morning was also filled with classes and the only time I have to read the letter was this afternoon. "Hey girl! What made you so happy? I heard your happy little scream down the hall," said the tall and slim like a model brunette also known as my best friend Patricia. We've been together since our freshman years and have been inseparable eversince. "Guess what?" I asked her. "Just tell me you little s**t. Don't keep me on my toes anymore." "I got in." "OH MY GOD!," she exclaimed. "For real? Like real real real?! Let me see that letter!" as she grabs the letter in my hand. "Congratulations Luci! I'm so happy for you!" We hugged while jumping up and down, like we're kids who won the top prize in a carnival. After we calmed down a bit, we finally noticed the librarian glaring straight at us. "C'mon, let's go before she kicks us out" I tell her and quickly grab my stuff. After leaving the library, we made our way to our favorite little cafe near the campus avenue. It was already past 3 pm and many of the seats are already taken. Fortunately, we've been frequenting this wonderful establishment for a long time and the barista already knows us and keeps "our" table free. "Buenos dias, my lovely señoritas! Glad you could stop by today. Grab a seat and I'll be right there with you! The regular?" he hollers from the counter. "Hola Adam! Yes please!" I replied. Adam is a spanish wannabe. Ha Ha. He's actually a linguistic major who is moonlighting as a barista. Spanish just happens to be his favorite language, thus the greetings. He's a tall lean cutie pie with shaggy black hair and green eyes. Yummy right? But definitely not for me. Adam tries to hide it, but he has a thing for my dearest Pat. I really ship them together and pray that he grows some balls to freaking ask her out! "So," Pat started as we take our seats. "This calls for a celebration. What do you want to do? A party? A spa day? Tell me! Ooh, what about bar hopping. Maybe meet some new boys?" "Good Lord, I still can't believe I'm accepted. This is a once in a lifetime chance. I'm going to the sss Pat! That's every wildlife biologist's dream. And a celebration really is a must! I wonder what we really should do." "Did I just hear you say celebration?," Adam asked as he places our orders in front of us. "Hot chocolate with extra whip cream and cinnamon toppings for you darling Pat and peppermint green tea for you Luci. Now tell me what are we celebrating for?" "Well señor Adam, our wonderful señorita Luci got her acceptance letter from Smithsonian today!" Pat explained. "Woah! That's for the sss expedition right?! Congratulations dear! Let me grab you some cheesecake, on the house!" he says as he happily claps me on the back and walks back to the counter to get the cake. "Extra whip cream huh," I tease Pat. "He's just being friendly" she replies as she looks at Adam with a confused expression. "If you say so." I tell her. Adam made his way back to our table with not one, but two slices of cheesecake. "For my lovely ladies. I'm on break now, so let's use it wisely. Actually, our fraternity will be having a Cinco de Mayo party this Saturday. Lots of food, good music, and booze. You girls up for it?" Since we didn't have anything planned for the weekend yet and frankly, I've been too busy this past few weeks and really need a break and release some stress, we eagerly agreed with Adam's plan.
