Lyra
The high tension in the courtyard left a heavy, vibrating silence across the Shadow Claw estate.
Torin climbed the high tower steps, his breathing effortless, his dark eyes fixed on me the moment he crossed the threshold.
Vesper gave a short, silent nod and slipped past him, closing the door behind her to give us room.
The observation deck felt smaller with Torin inside it. His sheer presence, dense and brooding like storm clouds over Obsidian Ridge, filled the space.
He stopped three paces away, his gaze sweeping over my face, scanning for any sign of Julian’s words.
"He thinks you're dead," Torin said, his voice deep and gravelly. "Or crawling through the mud somewhere begging for a pack to take you in."
"Let him think it," I said, keeping my hands steady against the cold glass. "His arrogance will be his end."
A faint, dangerous curve touched Torin’s lips. He stepped closer, stopping right at my side. He turned his head, looking down through the tinted glass at the empty driveway below.
"He came here fishing for information," Torin said mockingly. "The Regional Athletic Board hasn't flagged any energy anomalies. He’s running those scans himself on Silver Fang's illegal satellites because he's paranoid."
I looked up at him, my heart doing a quiet, familiar strike against my ribs. "Blue frost on the rocks. That's what he said."
"Yes," Torin murmured. His dark eyes locked onto mine, low and unnervingly focused.
"Why didn't you tell him?" I asked quietly, my gaze holding his. "You could have thrown it in his face. You could have brought me down those stairs, stood me right in front of his car, and watched his heart stop."
"Because revenge wouldn't be sweet that way Lyra," Torin replied, taking a step toward me until I could feel the intense warmth radiating off his broad chest.
"It will be sweeter when you strip away everything he has built his entire identity on, in front of people and on the exact track where he discarded you."
He reached out, his long fingers brushing the edge of my jawline, light as a feather yet grounding me completely. My pulse spiked under his touch, but I didn't pull away.
"He called you trash," Torin whispered, his voice dropping into a register so dark it sent a shudder straight down my spine. "He called you a useless girl with no wolf inside her. In three weeks, when the gates open for the qualifiers, I want him to look across the starting line and see the woman that he called weak."
I swallowed hard, the dormant spark beneath my ribs flaring in response to his words with an icy, intoxicating thrill.
"I'm going to take his title, Torin," I whispered back, leaning into his touch just enough to let him feel the quiet heat rising off my skin.
Torin stared down at me, his storm-gray eyes darkening as he absorbed the sheer, unyielding cold in my tone.
Slowly, he withdrew his hand, his knuckles brushing against my collarbone before slipping into his pockets. He turned back toward the door, pausing with his hand resting on the heavy metal frame.
He looked back over his shoulder, his expression unreadable in the dim light of the tower.
"Come with me, Lyra," he said softly. "I want to show you something."
I turned away from the window, my pulse drumming against my collarbone as I followed him.
Torin led me down the winding stone stairs of the tower, past the main medical wing, and deep into the subterranean levels of the Shadow Claw estate.
He pulled open a heavy reinforced steel door at the end of the corridor, stepping aside to let me pass. I stopped in my tracks.
It wasn't a standard pack gym. It was a private, state-of-the-art sports science lab that put Silver Fang’s high-tech facilities to shame.
Overhead, grid lights cut through the dimness, casting thin red targeting rays across a banked synthetic track built onto heavy hydraulic lifts. Diagnostic cables dangled from the ceiling grid, and an array of biometric telemetry monitors hummed softly along the perimeter walls.
"This is the Shadow Claw biomechanical lab," Torin said, his heavy footsteps echoing beside me as he closed the door.
He walked over to a central control console, his long fingers sweeping across the glass interface. A massive 3D hologram flared to life in the center of the room.
It was a digital rendering of the Iron Reach Stadium track, the very track where I had fallen.
I approached the floating light projection, my eyes scanning the streaming lines of code, split-second velocity vectors, and pressure heat maps. "What am I looking at?"
"Your race from three days ago," he replied. "We intercepted the live telemetry feed from the track's surface sensors before Silver Fang scrubbed it from the public servers."
My chest tightened. "I don't need to see my failure again, Torin. I know..."
"You didn't buckle," he interrupted, his deep voice slicing cleanly through my sentence. He tapped the console, zooming in on turn four of the holographic track. "Look closer."
I stepped closer to the blue light. The hologram showed my runner silhouette leaning into the sharp bank. But as I watched the frame-by-frame breakdown, my breath caught in my throat.
On the outer lane, running right beside me, was Taryn Vane; Julian's bethrothed sprinter Silver Fang had been pushing all season.
In the broadcast, she had looked like she was just maintaining her line.
Here, in the raw infrared telemetry, a concentrated spike of thermal wolf-energy bled off Taryn's forearm two seconds before I lost my footing.
"Taryn," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a cold wave.
"Taryn used a localized kinetic discharge right into the banked curve’s dampener grid. She knew your human body couldn't absorb a high-frequency shockwave without an active wolf aura to anchor you. It was a targeted sabotage." Torin said, his shoulder nearly brushing mine as he leaned in to point at the sensor spike.
My hands clenched into tight fists at my sides. "Julian... did he know?"
"Whether he ordered it or just let his girl do the dirty work, it was planned," Torin said, turning his storm-gray eyes toward me.
"They wanted you off that track, Lyra. They needed you to fail publicly so Julian would have a bulletproof excuse to sever the bond and exile you without the board raising questions."
A sudden, fierce heat flared beneath my ribs.
"I thought I fell because I was weak." I said, my voice dropping into an icy calm as I stared at Taryn's thermal footprint on the hologram.
He tapped the console again, zooming in on my foot strike right after the shockwave hit.
Microscopic threads of dark energy had flared off my spikes the moment I made impact. My body had tried to absorb Taryn's kinetic attack, converting the shockwave into a sudden thermal vacuum that froze the moisture beneath my soles.
"You carry an Eclipse bloodline, Lyra. It converts heat to ice and Taryn's sabotage accidentally lit the fuse."Torin murmured, his eyes locking onto mine.
Julian hadn't just discarded me; he and Taryn had tried to end me.
