I was born powerless in a world where speed is everything. When I crossed the finish line in last place at the national qualifiers, my fated mate, the celebrated Alpha of the Silver Fang Pack didn't just break my heart. He stepped up to the broadcast mic and rejected me in front of millions, banishing me into the deadly Obsidian Ridge. He thought he was leaving me to die.Instead, the dark moon woke something ancient in my blood. Something faster, darker, and far more dangerous than any wolf on the track. Now, backed by the league’s most ruthless rival Alpha, I’m returning to the circuit under a new name. My ex-mate thinks he’s racing for another championship. He has no idea he’s racing the girl he destroyed and this time, I’m not just running for a trophy.I’m running to take his crown.

Chapter 1
Lyra The roar of seventy thousand shifter fans didn’t just fill the Iron Reach stadium; it vibrated through the soles of my running flats. Above us, giant floodlights cut through the humid night air, casting sharp, blinding beams over the wet, gravel-lined track. "Grid position twelve, Crescent," the race marshal barked, barely glancing up from his digital pad as he slapped a heavy biometric tracking band onto my bare forearm. "Ten-second warning to the blocks. Try not to get trampled out there." I didn't give him the satisfaction of an answer. I just adjusted the straps of my black carbon-mesh sports top, planted my heels into the damp turf, and stretched my legs. In a world where physical speed was status and shifter energy meant absolute dominance, I was a ghost. Twenty-two years old, born into the revered Silver Fang Pack, and without a wolf. All I had was a very good understanding of how to run around a track, how fast to take steps, and how to move through tight spaces in a split second. I was the defect of the Crescent lineage. The human-bound stray in a family of apex predators. But tonight was the Apex Dash national qualifier, a brutal, full-contact race across high-impact terrain. The top five runners would secure permanent professional athlete contracts with the territorial league. If I could take a spot using pure athletic technique, the Silver Fang pack board wouldn't be able to ignore me anymore. I wouldn't be a charity case hiding in the shadows of my family's legacy. I’d be an athlete on my own terms. "Lyra." The deep, smooth voice cut through the thundering noise of the crowd. My stomach did a familiar flip before my brain could stop it. Julian. I turned slowly. Julian Vance, Alpha heir of the Silver Fang Pack and the undisputed reigning champion of the sprint circuit, stood five paces away. He looked immaculate in his silver-and-white team suit, his golden-hued eyes gleaming with the effortless, arrogant calm of a wolf who had never known a tired muscle or an aching joint in his life. "Julian," I said, keeping my voice as flat as I could. "You should be in block one." "I came to tell you that you can still pull out of the race," he said for the thousandth time. He looked at me like a stubborn pet that has been refusing to obey a simple command. I was doing this so that he could start looking at me as an equal and for everyone to stop looking down on me. "The marshals pumped up the track difficulty for the broadcast. The physical pressure on the banked curves is designed for shifters running with their wolves. Without an internal aura to absorb the shockwave, you’re going to tear your tendons apart." "I’ve run this circuit a thousand times," I suddenly snapped, tired of his constant lectures. Julian sighed, running a hand through his dark blonde hair. "Why are you so stubborn?" "Training runs aren't the live track, Lyra. The entire territory is watching. The broadcast is being syndicated across five shifter nations. If you collapse out there, it doesn't just embarrass you; You're going to embarrass me also." He stepped fully into my space, his scent- cedarwood and heavy, ozone-thick Alpha aura rolling over me like a suffocating wave. For a fraction of a second, the strange, faint pull deep inside my chest flared. The fated mate bond. It was dormant, unawakened because my body lacked the wolf power to ignite the connection, but it was there. A thin, fragile thread tying me to a man who looked at me like a smudge on his record. "I’m not pulling out," I said, looking him dead in his golden eyes. "I earned my lane." Julian’s jaw tightened, the warm light in his eyes dimming into something cold, distant, and sharp. "Have it your way. But remember out on that track, nobody is going to slow down to save you." He turned on his heel, merging back into the sea of silver-clad Silver Fang officials who looked straight through me as if I were made of glass. Five minutes later, my spikes dug into the damp rubber of the starting blocks. The stadium vibrated with the collective breathing of nineteen elite shifter athletes lining up in the lanes around me. Red light. I lowered my hips, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. Yellow light. I coiled my muscles to the absolute limit, my eyes locked on the first banked curve sixty meters ahead. Green. The air shattered as twenty bodies launched forward. For the first four hundred meters, my technique carried me through the chaos. While the shifters around me relied on their raw, instinctual reflexes and wolf-enhanced lung capacities, I relied on pure physics. I took the tightest line on the inside curve, my stride rhythm rising in a cadence as I sliced past two runners who overextended on the wet track. Position nine. "She’s making moves!" the stadium announcer’s voice boomed over the arena speakers, echoing off the concrete walls. "The unshifted Crescent girl is holding her pace! But here comes turn three: the Banked Wall!" Ahead of me, the track swept upward into a steep, timber-and-asphalt curve. My lungs burned with ice. A heavy, suffocating wave of physical pressure slammed into my lane. The wolves ahead of me were unleashing their raw shift-auras to grip the track, warping the air pressure to propel themselves faster. Without a wolf to buffer, my chest felt like it was trapped. Sharp pain shot through my left thigh. The brutal pressure wave pressed down on my shoulders like a slab of concrete. No. Not now. I forced another stride, screaming through my teeth as my vision blurred at the edges. I hit the high bank, but my left knee buckled under the crushing weight. My spikes lost their bite on the slick surface. My footing gave out completely. I hit the track hard, tumbling across the rough gravel and wet turf in a nauseating blur of floodlights and agony. The rest of the pack surged past me in a deafening wave of thunderous footfalls, heat, and wind. I lay there in the mud as the broadcast drones hovered overhead, their camera lenses zooming in on my broken form while the arena screens projected my failure to millions. I dragged myself up, my skin torn and bleeding, but the race was long over. And then, the marshals brought out the broadcast microphone. Julian stepped onto the center podium, the victor's medal gleaming against his chest. He looked down at me from the stage, his golden eyes cold and absolute as his voice thundered through seventy thousand silent spectators: "Tonight was supposed to be a demonstration of Silver Fang dominance. Instead, we were forced to witness the limits of weakness. Lyra Crescent, as Alpha heir, I declare you a liability to our pack. I hereby sever any claim between us, reject you as my mate, and sign your banishment from Silver Fang territory, effective immediately.”
