Chapter 4

Lyra I looked down at his outstretched hand. The dark leather of his glove looked so pristine against the rain-soaked volcanic rock of the ridge. "A contract," I repeated, my voice dropping an octave as the energy at my fingertips crackled softly, reacting to his presence. "You think I’m looking for another Alpha to hand my leash to?" Torin didn't pull his hand back. His storm-gray eyes didn't flicker; instead, he let out a low chuckle. "If I wanted a pet, Lyra, I’d buy one," Torin said, his gaze dropping briefly to the dark, liquid wisps of shadow curling around my forearms before locking back onto my violet eyes. "I'm offering resources, track access, high-altitude training facilities, and a top-tier legal team to block the Silver Fangs from dragging you to their pack." I narrowed my eyes and closed the space between us, feeling his heat push against the mountain-freezing wind. "And what do you get out of this? Generosity isn't a trait associated with the Shadow Claw Pack." "I get the weapon that shatters Julian Vance's four-year reign," Torin answered, his tone shifting into something cold, precise, and razor-sharp. "The Apex Dash circuit isn't just a race, and you know it. It's political theater. The Silver Fangs use Julian’s winning streak to justify their territorial dominance and secure billions in corporate sponsorships. If he falls, their entire empire cracks from the inside out." He took one deliberate step forward, closing the remaining distance until he was towering over me, his shadow completely swallowing mine. "You want to make him pay for rejecting you," Torin murmured, leaning down so only I could hear his words over the wind. "I want to bring him down. We have the exact same enemy, Crescent. The only difference is that I have the platform." My lungs hitched. The raw, violent memories rushed back into my mind. Julian’s cold, arrogant voice echoing over the stadium speakers; the crowd's cruel, mocking silence; my family turning their backs against me; and the brutal kicks from the guards. A fresh wave of power surged through my veins, hot and hungry. "I have three conditions," I said, my voice as hard as iron. A faint, approving smirk touched the corner of Torin’s lips. "Name them." "First, I run under a fake name until the mid-season championship. No one knows I'm alive." I listed, holding up my finger. "Second, I control my own training metrics. I know my body's physical limits." "Done," Torin said without hesitation. "And the third?" "If you ever try to command me using Alpha authority," I whispered, stepping into his personal space until my glowing purple eyes were inches from his, "I’ll tear your tracksuit to ribbons and leave you in the dirt right next to Julian." For a second, the air between us went dead silent. A dangerous, golden flare ignited deep within Torin’s storm-gray eyes; his own primal wolf reacting to it like it was a challenge. The weight of his aura became heavier and intoxicating, rolling over my skin like warm velvet. Then, he smirked. "Deal," Torin said. He pulled off his leather glove, tossing it onto the rocks, and offered me his bare hand. "Welcome to the Shadow Claw Pack, Crescent." I reached out and grasped his palm. The moment our bare skin touched, a physical shockwave snapped through the air. It wasn't the cold, fragile thread of the dormant bond I had shared with Julian. This was a roaring, violent jolt of electricity. Torin’s eyes widened slightly, his grip tightening around my hand for a fraction of a second before he pulled back, his jaw setting as he cleared his throat. "My transport is parked at the base of the ridge," Torin said, turning toward the steep descent and putting his glove back on. By dawn, the sleek, matte-black transport vehicle pulled into the private underground garage of the Shadow Claw athletic complex, nestled deep within the jagged peaks of Obsidian Ridge. Unlike the flashy gold aesthetic of the Silver Fang grounds, this place meant business; it was built entirely from brushed steel, reinforced carbon fiber, and high-tech athletic gear. Torin led me down a glass-walled corridor overlooking a massive indoor track. Waiting at the end of the hall was a heavily built, gray-haired man leaning on a mechanical cane. His left leg was reinforced with silver bracing, and his face was scarred with the harsh, distinct lines of a veteran who had survived a high-speed track disaster. "A new person?" Bran grunted, squinting at me through thick, analytical eyes. He pulled up a clear holographic pad and scanned my biometric signature as I walked up to him. "Biometrics are off the charts. High-density kinetic output, strange electromagnetic noise around the muscle tissue... she doesn't read like a standard wolf." "She isn't standard," Torin said, resting a hand on the back of his hip as he leaned against the track railing. "Bran, this is Lyra. She's our new wild card for the circuit." Bran stopped tapping his pad. He looked up, his weathered eyes narrowing as he recognized my face. "Julian Vance's rejected mate," Bran said bluntly, though there was no disgust in his voice; only a bitter, understanding sympathy. "The girl they threw out." "The girl who's going back to take his crown," I corrected coldly. Bran looked at me for a long moment, from my glowing violet eyes down to the coiled stance of my legs. A slow, vicious grin spread across his scarred face. "I like her already," Bran chuckled, tossing a black locker key toward my chest. I caught it out of the air before it could even hit my top. "Locker four, Crescent. Get washed up and changed. Your training assessment starts in ten minutes." I nodded, turning toward the locker rooms. But as I reached the door, the giant wall-mounted news monitor in the main hallway flickered to life, interrupting the morning broadcast. The screen shifted to a live press conference at the Silver Fang headquarters. Julian Vance stood at the center podium in a tailored white suit, flanked by his father and a glowing, triumphant Taryn Vane. The caption scrolling across the bottom of the screen read: SILVER FANG ALPHA ANNOUNCES NEW LUNA BETROTHAL & UNBEATEN SEASON PROJECTION. "The Silver Fang Pack remains stronger than ever," Julian’s calm, rehearsed voice echoed from the speakers. "We have removed the weak links from amongst us. The upcoming season will prove that true dominance belongs only to those born with elite wolf blood." I stood in the shadow of the doorway, watching Julian smile for the flashing cameras. I looked down at the locker key in my palm, my fingers crushing the metal until it bent. Enjoy the spotlight while it lasts, Julian, I thought, my violet eyes burning with a dark, lethal promise. Because I’m coming for your track, your title, and your legacy.
