MADE IN TAIWAN (A Taiwan Love Story)
INT. RESTAURANT - DAY SOUND of polite chatter, cutlery on plates SARAH PAMINTUAN (25), bright and eager but flustered, rushes into the chic restaurant. She’s slightly dishevelled. She’s so focused on her phone, checking the time, that she bumps into a man (ELIAS THORNE, 30s, impeccably dressed) near the entrance. SARAH (startled, dropping her phone) Oh! I'm so sorry! She quickly picks up her phone, a mumbled apology escaping her lips. Elias, slightly annoyed but composed, brushes himself off. ELIAS (curtly) It's quite alright. Sarah glances at Elias, but doesn't recognize him. She hurries on, still focused on her lateness, completely unaware she's just collided with her potential employer. She reaches the table, finds it empty, and goes through the same sequence of events as before – discovering the business card, leaving a message, and expressing her disappointment. Elias Thorne - Thorne Industries." SARAH (whispering) Elias Thorne… I’m doomed. This was a huge opportunity. A virtual assistant position with Thorne Industries! And I blew it. She carefully places the handbag back on the chair. A waiter approaches. WAITER (politely) Everything alright, ma'am? SARAH (forcing a smile) Yes, thank you. I… I seem to have missed someone. They were expecting me. Perhaps I could leave a message? The waiter shrugs, unconcerned. Sarah pulls out her phone, her fingers fumbling. She tries to compose a text, but her words seem inadequate. She ends up leaving a simple, apologetic message. SARAH (to herself, defeated) Well, that's that. Another missed chance. Back to the caregiving gig. At least the clients there appreciate my punctuality. She sighs, the weight of her missed opportunity heavy on her shoulders. The restaurant buzzes around her, a stark contrast to the silence of her regret. The camera focuses on the half-eaten plate, a symbol of her lost chance. Fade to black. Family Support [Setting: Sarah's cozy living room, a sunny afternoon] Sarah: [Excitedly picks up her phone and dials her siblings' numbers] Sister: [Answering the call] Hello? Sarah: Hi, it's me, Sarah. I have something important to tell you both. Brother: Hey Sarah, what's up? Everything okay? Sarah: Yes, everything's more than okay. I've made a big decision. I've decided to work abroad as a caregiver. Sister: Wow, Ate Sarah, that's huge! But why? When did you decide this? Sarah: I've been thinking about it for a while now. I want to explore new opportunities and help others in a meaningful way. It's something I feel really passionate about. Brother: That's incredible, Sarah. We're so proud of you for following your heart. Sister: Absolutely, Sarah. We support you fully in this decision. We know you'll do amazing things and touch so many lives. Sarah: Thank you both. Your support means everything to me. I couldn't have asked for better siblings. Brother: We'll miss you here, but we know this is important to you. We'll be here cheering you on every step of the way. Sister: Definitely, Sarah. Remember, no matter where you are, we're just a call away. We love you. Sarah: I love you both too. Thank you for being the best siblings a girl could ask for. This means the world to me. [The siblings share a moment of love and support, knowing that their bond will remain unbreakable no matter the distance] The Agency in Manila Setting: A bustling employment agency in Manila. Papers are scattered on desks, and several applicants wait anxiously. (Sarah, in her early 25, dressed neatly but simply, nervously clutches a folder containing her documents. She approaches a desk where MS. CHEN, a stern but fair agency representative, sits.) SARAH: (Hesitantly) Magandang araw po. I'm Sarah Pamintuan. I have an appointment… for the caregiver position in Taiwan? MS. CHEN: (Looks up, glances at her appointment book) Ah, yes, Ms. Pamintuan. Please have a seat. (Gestures to a chair) Tell me, why are you interested in working as a caregiver in Taiwan? SARAH: (Sits, takes a deep breath) My siblings… they're back home in the province. They need help. Financially, and… well, with everything. I'm working a side job here in Manila, and renting a small apartment, but it’s not enough. This opportunity… it's my only hope to give them a better life. MS. CHEN: (Observes Sarah carefully) It's a demanding job, Ms. Pamintuan. Long hours, emotional toll… Are you prepared for that? SARAH: (Nods firmly) Yes, po. I'm a hard worker. I’m also patient and compassionate. And the thought of helping my siblings… it gives me strength. MS. CHEN: (Examines Sarah's documents) Your qualifications seem adequate. We'll need to conduct a medical examination and background check. If everything checks out, we'll contact you about your deployment. SARAH: (A wave of relief washes over her) Maraming salamat po! I’ll do anything you need me to. (Sarah leaves the agency, a mix of hope and apprehension in her eyes.) Scene 2: Arrival in Taiwan Setting: A bustling airport in Taiwan. Sarah is surrounded by unfamiliar sights and sounds. She’s carrying a small suitcase and a large duffel bag. (Sarah steps out of the arrival gate, her eyes wide with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. She spots a representative from the agency holding a sign with her name.) REPRESENTATIVE: (Smiling warmly) Ms. Pamintuan? Welcome to Taiwan! I'm Mr. Lee. I'll be taking you to your new location. SARAH: (A nervous smile)Good Morning. Thank you. (During the car ride, Sarah gazes out the window, taking in the new environment. A wave of homesickness washes over her, but she quickly pushes it aside, focusing on the reason she’s there.) (Later, Sarah stands outside the home where she will be working. She takes a deep breath, then knocks on the door. She is met by the family she will be caring for. The scene ends with a hopeful, yet slightly uncertain expression on Sarah’s face.) Arrival in Taiwan (Sarah arrives at the house and knocks. The door opens, revealing Mr. Wang, a kind-looking man in his late 30s. He has a gentle demeanor but a hint of weariness in his eyes.) MR. Wang: (In Mandarin, with English subtitles) **,Ms. Pamintuan. Welcome. I’m Wang Wei. My mother is expecting you. SARAH: (In Tagalog, then switches to slightly hesitant English) Magandang araw po, Mr. Wang. It’s… it’s a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for having me. (Mr. Wang gestures for her to enter. Inside, the house is neat but shows signs of age. Mrs. Wang, the elderly woman, is sitting in a comfortable chair, looking frail but alert.) MR. Wang: (To Mrs. Wang in Mandarin, then translates) Mama, this is Sarah. She will be your caregiver. MRS. Wang: (Weakly, but with a warm smile) (Mandarin with English subtitles) **。 Welcome to our home. SARAH: (Smiling warmly, she approaches Mrs. Wang) Magandang araw po. It’s nice to meet you, po. (Mr. Wang observes Sarah interacting with his mother. He notices her gentle touch and the reassuring way she speaks. A slight relief crosses his face.) MR. Wang: (To Sarah, in English) My mother… she can be a bit… demanding at times. But she’s also very sweet. Please, don’t hesitate to ask if you need anything. I’ll be around to help as much as I can. SARAH: (Nods understandingly) I understand, Mr. Wang. I'm here to help in any way I can. I'm used to working hard. (Mr. Wang shows Sarah to her room. As he leaves, he glances back at Sarah, a subtle hint of gratitude in his eyes. The scene ends with Sarah unpacking her things, a sense of both responsibility and hope filling her heart.) In the next scene, Sarah arrives at a lavish event hosted by Mr. Wang Wei. The atmosphere is filled with elegant decor and the sound of soft music. As she mingles with the guests, she suddenly spots Mrs. Wang, her boss's wife, went across the room. Dressed in an exquisite gown and exuding an air of sophistication, Mrs. Wang seems to command attention. Sarah felt a mixture of excitement and apprehension as she approached her boss's wife. Unbeknownst to Sarah, Mrs. Wang is not just a gracious host; she is also the formidable sister-in-law of Wang Jan Hao, the male leader currently managing his father's inheritance business in the U.K. As Sarah introduces herself, Mrs. Wang's smile is charming, but there’s a hint of something more sinister behind her polite demeanor. The two engage in small talk, with Mrs. Wang subtly probes Sarah about her relationship with Mr. Wang Wei and hints at her own ambitions for her family. The tension builds as Sarah realizes that Mrs. Wang is not the supportive figure she initially appeared to be, but rather a woman with her own agenda, possibly complicating Sarah's life and her connection to Jan Hao. This encounter sets the stage for future conflicts, with Sarah caught in the crossfire between the powerful Wang family dynamics and her own aspirations.
