Chapter three. “Minthie point of view.” My sister and I have been in the base for almost three months now. The Sargent Mendez has told us that they call this kind of places the new metropolises. He is a good man, he knows my sister and I are alone so he gives us a special treatment. And he always has candies in his pockets for us. And he even gave us some codes of the doors so we could move freely around the building. Nadia hasn´t been ok since the day our parents died. She hasn’t talked much and she seems lost in her thoughts almost all the time. I know what she saw must have traumatized her. I miss them too. And it saddens me that they are not here with us, but I know they are watching over us wherever they are. And they would want to us to move on and be happy. While my sister is sleeping in our room I decided to go out to investigate the building as I have done every day since we have been here. I was wondering in the endless hallways when I saw a group of soldiers getting ready to go out. I hide behind some boxes to look at them. They're loading guns in the back of the trucks while they laugh and joke about something I can´t understand. I stay hidden until they get ready to leave and that’s when something in my mind clicks. I run as fast as I can to the doors before they close. Seeing the trees outside motivates me to go faster and when I think I won’t make it the doors close behind me and I’m outside the building. I try to catch my breath while looking my surroundings to see what’s near me. I start walking towards a little mountain of sand to see better were we are. I get fascinated whit the view, everything is golden and I missed the sun so much. I always loved to play outside and been trapped in a building with only artificial light was tiring. I could see at the beginning of a forest in the distance and that’s where I headed next. I walked for a minute before arriving at the forest. I smelled some flowers and I went to collect them. Nadia loved flowers and maybe this would make her a little bit happier. I saw some wild flowers with bright colours and knelt to cut some of them. After I collected some of them I sat on the ground and tied the bouquet with a piece of grass as my mother had taught me before. I was admiring my work when I heard a stick break near me. I raised my head quickly looking around me. I couldn´t see what was there but I could feel I was being watched. I got up as fast as I could and standing on my feet I backed towards the building. My heart skipped a beat when the noise repeated and big yellow eyes appeared from the bushes. The creature had its eyes focused on me following my every move. It slowly came out from the dark and I saw it. It was a beautiful wolf. It´s brown fur glowing in the light. It hair shone so bright that it appeared to be bathed in gold. I was so fascinated by it I didn’t even realized it was so close to me until I felt it´s breathing in my face. I couldn’t lie I was scared. This is what everyone else was telling stories about but it was so breath taking. It was so stunning that I needed to touch it, so I reached out and ran my fingers over its head. It seems that she liked the gesture because her head rested on my hand. Getting more confident I moved so I could pet it´s back and for my surprise he laid in his back with his belly up. A big smile appeared in my face. His fur was so soft. I don’t know how much I stayed petting him. But the magic ended when other creature came out from the trees. This time it wasn´t as pleasure looking like this wolf. The only thing that beast reminded me off was a demon. It was really tall, with long arms that ended in pointy nails. Its skin was pitch black. When it glanced at me it´s mouth opened and a guttural sound came from it. It had long yellow fangs that shone with saliva. The wolf that was currently lying under me jumped up and stood in guard in front of me, forming a shield between the beast and me. The demon rushes toward us and started to fight the wolf when he intersected the attack. A scream rose from the bottom of my lungs. Turning around I started to run as fast as my legs could. I never let go of the flowers, I had them pressed against my chest. I heard that thing running behind me and my panic rose when I looked back and saw him closer to me. With more lightning I could recognize sometime of wolf form but I wasn´t sure off it. I could see the beginning of the forest getting closer and closer. I accelerated my steps a little more and breathed more relieved when I left the forest behind. The running sound stopped and the beast remained in the part where the forest touched the sand. I didn´t even think and kept running until I reached the building and wrote the codes in the nearest door. Getting inside I run to my bedroom a saw that Nadia wasn’t there. Felling safe I sat on the floor and my eyes watered when I realized that I could have died. Those eyes never left my mind and one month later I stud in the same place waiting for something. I sat in there for what felt one hour until a noise came from my left. The same yellow eyes where there. A sense of happiness rushed from my body and I stand up walking to him. He licked my hand when I tried to touch him, like he was happy to see me too. I stayed playing with him until the sun came down. And for my surprise he stayed by my side as I left the forest. Waving goodbye at him I ran to the building and entered. That interaction repeated for years. And now I being 20 years old that connection grow stronger. We would stay there and play. Sometimes I used to sleep in his fur. Always bringing flowers to my sister. She isn´t well. The Sargent Méndez says she needs medical help. She hasn´t talked for over a year now and it had me preoccupied. I used to find her looking to the dark at night talking to someone who wasn´t there. And she would disappear for long periods of the day. Now I was whit Kalon as I had named him that. I remember that my mother read me a book where it said that kolan meant a kind of beauty that is more that skin deep. And that name fitted him. Playing with his fur as my focused was in the distance. “Tomorrow it´s Nadia birthday” I stated as I looked down. Kalon raised his head like he understood me. “I don’t know what to give her. I don’t even know if she is going to get out of that numb state.” I noticed a ray of sunshine reach a sunflower and how it turn to face the sun. “What do you think I should give her?” I chucked as I spoke and Kolan made a sound. As he was saying don’t even ask me. I realized it was getting dark and moved his head from my lap. He growled and I laughed. “It´s time to go. I promise I will see you soon.” I petted his head one more time and headed to the building. A sadness took my body as I saw the big doors. I hated there. I felt trapped every time I was inside. And surprisingly they never found out I used to scape very often. It would shock me if something would enter and they wouldn´t notice. Such dumb people. Walking thought the hallways I tough I could bake my sister a cake. With that tough in mind I entered my room to find Francis inside. Francis was the Sargent son and he had some crazy crush on me. “I was looking for you.” He exclaimed. “I went for a walk.” I stated while walking towards a desk that was in the left corner to place the flowers. “Where? I looked everywhere for you” He insisted as he walked towards me. “I don´t owe you an answer Francis.” I replied getting annoyed. He stood next to me. Too close for my comfort. “Can you move?” “I get worried when you are not around.” He muttered trying to touch my hair. Snapping his hand away I rushed to the other side of the room and warned him. “Just stay away from me. We had this talk a million times Francis.” “I know. But you must understand that…” he was cut when my sister entered the room. She looked at both of us and came my way whispering nonsense. “Nadia” I exclaimed. “Where have you been?” I asked her since I hadn’t seen her since the morning. She just stood there looking at me mumbling something. Francis cleared his throat to get my attention. I glanced at him and he stated. “I will see you later Minthie. I need to tell you something important.” He didn´t let me answer him before he leaved the room. Sighing I look at my sister again and take a strip of her hair out of her face. “I think is time for your shower”. She grumbled following me. It brought a smile to my face. “Don’t complain Nadia” I laughed. “Tomorrow it´s your birthday and you need to be clean. It will be a special day.” I say as I turned the shower on. But what I did not know is that that day would change everything.
