The Wedding Surprise
Today was a special day for Maya because it was her wedding day. As she walked into the hall, she could see several guests gathered to celebrate her. The hall was beautifully designed with lots of lights, and soft music played in the background. But as she looked around, she couldn’t find her room. Her best friend, Eunice, was by her side.
“Eunice, have you seen Andrew?” Maya asked curiously.
“I don’t think he’s arrived yet. Just come down and wait. He will be here soon. You need to try to calm down, Maya,” Eunice replied.
But Maya was aware of who Andrew was. She knew Andrew wasn’t the type to come to special events late. He had always been punctual unless something had held him up.
“Please, I need to use the restroom. Where is it?” Maya asked.
Eunice nodded, and Maya made her way to the restroom.
As she walked, she heard a sound that seemed very familiar. Could it be Andrew’s voice? She wondered. As she walked closer, she tried to see who it was.
Maya realized it was Andrew, but he was with Clara, her stepsister. She overheard their conversation.
“Look, Clara. You know I love you. There’s no way I could choose Maya over you. From the start, I’ve always loved you, not Maya. I’m only marrying her because my parents prefer her, and I wouldn’t want to disappoint them. But trust me, after I get married to her, I’ll get my parents' approval, and my inheritance. Then, you can be sure that I’ll come back for you. I’ll make her life miserable and eventually divorce her. Then I’ll be with you,” Andrew said as he touched Clara’s hand.
“Are you sure I can trust you on this? I’ve kept our affair a secret from Maya for so long. Why? Because I thought you would finally marry me. But today, we are getting married to my stepsister, Maya. I’m so angry,” Clara responded.
“You don’t have to worry about anything, Clara. I will keep my word. I’ll come back for you. Now, let’s go back to the hotel. The guests are waiting, and by now, Maya must have arrived. We don’t want to cause a scene and make them start suspecting us,” Andrew said.
Maya was shocked and disappointed. She thought that marrying Andrew would bring her the peace and happiness she had been lacking all these years.
Living with her stepmother and stepsister had been really difficult. She had been maltreated and humiliated several times. When Andrew asked her to marry him, she felt like she had found her savior and agreed to marry him, thinking it would take her away from her wicked stepmother and stepsister. But it turned out she was wrong.
As she noticed they were about to come out, she quickly hurried back to the hall. She wasn’t looking her best.
“What’s the problem?” Eunice asked curiously. Maya was so depressed that she couldn’t even reply, but from her expression, it was clear that everything wasn’t fine.
Soon, Andrew joined her at the altar, and the ceremony began. The priest recited the marriage vows, but just then, Maya had several thoughts running through her mind. She knew if she married Andrew, she would never be happy in the marriage, so she made a shocking statement.
“I won’t be proceeding with this marriage,” she said.
Everyone was shocked. They whispered among themselves about how foolish she was for turning down the hand of a man from a wealthy family like Andrew’s. Everyone knew her as the poor girl with a humble background, but now they realized she wasn’t as smart as they thought.
Maya knew how hard it had been for her to prepare for this day, but today, she wouldn’t leave without getting married.
She looked at the audience and noticed a handsome young man about to leave. She quickly approached him.
“Will you marry me?” Maya asked.
The man was stunned. He wasn’t expecting to witness such a scene. In fact, his coming to the wedding was an accident. He had misplaced the address for an important event he was supposed to attend but mistakenly came to this venue. When he realized the mistake, he decided to leave, but that’s when Maya saw him.
Maya looked at him, ecstatically waiting for him to say yes.
“I don’t have any money, and I won’t be able to take care of you,” Ethan said.
The crowd laughed at Maya, calling her pathetic. She was poor and wanted to marry a poor man, which would only mean they would both suffer.
“I will work hard for both of us, so you don’t have to worry about money,” Maya said.
She just couldn’t stand the shame of not getting married that day.
“Alright, let’s do it,” Ethan said.
Maya was delighted, and they both got married.
After the wedding, they proceeded to the court to register their marriage.
They completed all the necessary registration for their marriage and now had to go home.
It was then that Maya realized she couldn’t go back to her stepmother’s house.
“Will it be possible for me to move in with you, just for the meantime? I promise I’ll get somewhere better for both of us,” Maya asked.
Ethan was struck. It had never crossed his mind that something like this would happen. So, he cleverly excused himself.
“Just give me a few minutes to answer this call,” he said, stepping aside. He made a call to his assistant.
“Hello, James, get me an apartment that is modest and could portray me as a poor man,” Ethan said.
James was confused, and when he tried to question Ethan, he shunned him and told him he needed the apartment in the next five minutes and for James to send him the address.
He hung up the call and returned to Maya.
“I’m sorry if it will be a burden to you, but it’s just for a short time,” Maya said.
Ethan knew he could just say yes if it was his original mansion, but he had just told her he was poor. He had no idea who she was, whether she was a gold digger or just some opportunist.
Worse still, he could lose her if she wasn’t interested in wealthy individuals. So, he focused on his phone anxiously while he waited for James to send the address of the house.
The moment the message arrived on his phone, he raised his head to Maya and nodded.
“You can move in with me. After all, we are married, and a wife should move in with her husband.”
He signaled for a cab to take them home, but just then, James tracked him down and stopped to approach him. How would he handle this situation?
