Chapter 26
** Sharp Edges pack, 8:08pm**
** Alpha Maverick's pov **
I inhaled as the cool breeze hit me, I was there again standing on the same cliff Jolene jumped from.
Since the day my wolf had a whiff of her scent, I had been coming everyday hoping that I would come across Jolene.
I had a feeling that she is alive and isn't far from my reach, I crave badly to see her.
I just need to earn her forgiveness so I can live peacefully. All these years that passed by, I lived my life with so much guilt and blame.
It's been an hour since I came here, it was getting late but I don't feel like leaving.
If it was possible for me to stay all night, I would gladly do that but I just can't.
I've been coming here alone for the past one week and Collins is beginning to grow suspicious of me.
I am sure if he finds out that I have been visiting the place of his sister's death, we are going to have problems.
"I wonder if you're doing alright, I just wanted to say I am sorry." I said to the emptiness and exhaled.
There was no single being around, I was just the only one, standing at the edge of a cliff.
If someone sees me right now, he or she might conclude I want to commit suicide.
But I just wanted to feel the same way Jolene felt when she jumped from the cliff. It must have been the hardest decision of her life.
If she truly jumped, there was no way she was going to survive it.
Maybe the moon goddess had her own plans but I am grateful to the moon goddess for sparing the life of Jolene.
Even though I wasn't sure if she was truly alive, I just had this feeling that she really is and being able to sniff her scent gives me hope.
I thought getting married to Cynthia would fill the emptiness in my life, make me forget about Jolene , make me stop feeling guilty and help me move on but I was wrong.
I only felt worse and regretted while I got married to Cynthia, it would have been perfect if we remained best friends.
Since she wasn't my mate, I don't feel any attraction towards her, I don't see her as my other half or the Luna of my pack.
I just feel she is not the right person. The only thing that attracts me to Cynthia is her boldness, authoritative lifestyle, she has a strong attribute and possesses most qualities of a Luna.
We don't even act like couples, it's just a loveless marriage and my pack contributed to making this happen.
We quarrel almost all the time and she even causes trouble in my pack, trying to boss around and all of that.
I have no choice than to accept the way things are and try to make things work out between us so we can breed a stronger pack.
"It's time to go home,"
I told myself and immediately hurried down from the cliff, I went back to my pack immediately.
All pack activities have ended for the day since it was nightfall, it was only the guards that could still be seen around, they are meant to look after the pack house all through the night and protect my pack members from any form of external attack.
I got into my mansion and met Collins,
"Where have you been all alone by yourself?" He inquired
"Just decided to take a night walk," I replied simply and he scoffed.
"You know I won't buy that, why don't you allow me to come with you if it was just a night walk." He asked and I sighed, he just wouldn't understand.
"I just wanted to be alone, you know as an Alpha, I just need to clear some things off my head." I said falsely and he chuckled.
"Are you seeing another lady secretly?" He asked in whispers and my eyes widened.
I smacked him lightly on the head,
"Ouch! Alpha, did I say anything wrong?"
"Why would you think such? I am not a cheat," I snapped and rolled my eyes at him, he then laughed loudly.
"It's obvious, you can hide a secret from everyone but it shouldn't be me, so is she prettier than Cynthia?"
Like seriously? Does he think I am seeing another lady? That's like asking for more torments!
"Collins! There's no girl okay? Stop being silly!" I warned and he chuckled.
"Cynthia is back," he suddenly informed me and I smirked.
"When did she come back?"
"Few minutes after you left for your so called night walk,"
"Did she sneak on or what?"
"She just acted normally, she should be in her room. I have told you to give me permission to secretly monitor her so I can know where she goes all the time."
"You shouldn't worry, I will handle it. You go do something else,"
I went straight to Cynthia's room immediately, she actually left the pack at noon and just arrived like an hour ago.
Does she think she can move in and out without my permission? Without saying anything or even informing me?
I barged into her room and met her drying her hair with a towel, she obviously just had her bath as a towel was wrapped around her chest.
"You should learn to knock," she said, not even looking up at me.
"As what? I am your husband, I hope you haven't forgotten that?"
"Oh really? I am surprised, the first time you're addressing yourself as my husband. I thought we were strangers since you act like I don't even exist." She said with a scoff and I smirked.
"I am not here to argue with you but you've gotta tell me where you went for hours without even informing or seeking my permission." I demanded and she broke into a derisive laughter.
"And why do I have to seek your permission? Why do you need to be informed? Why do you suddenly care?" She yelled standing up immediately.
Why is she acting up simply because I asked her a simple question?
"I just asked you a question Cynthia, don't try to ignore my question."
"I have no answer to give to you, my going out and coming in is none of your business." She snapped and continued drying her hair while facing the mirror.
I closed up the space between us and forcefully made her look at me.
"What has come over you Cynthia?"
"You! You're not treating me like your wife, you don't care if I am okay or not, you act like I don't exist. You just married me so the pack won't stop pestering you. Since we got married, we have never had s*x, you starved me for weeks. Do you think I would be happy?" She yelled and I sighed heavily.
If she only knows what I am passing through emotionally,
"Fine, I will make it up to you, you should answer my question first." I persisted and she smirked.
"I can see I just yelled for nothing, I wasted my words and energy. You should also tell me where you go most times without your Beta, I am not the only one at fault."
"I went for a night walk,"
"Night walk indeed! Why can't we go for the night walk together? Stop trying to fool me and just leave my room, I am not in the mood to talk to you." She snapped and continued with what she was doing.
I pulled her by the hands and she slapped my hands immediately,
"You expect me to stay in my room all day doing nothing? I actually went to see a friend, I hope I have satisfied your curiosity!"
A friend? That sounds like a lie,
"If you don't believe me, you should just get out." She yelled.
I gulped and glanced at her before leaving her room. I decided not to argue or quarrel with her anymore.
Even though we act like strangers, she is still my wife and I won't allow her to mess things up.
I went straight to meet Collins.
He was busy trying to put some things in order.
"Hey, that face shows you guys quarrel," he said walking up to me and I sighed.
"I need you to start monitoring every one of Cynthia's moves, I smell something fishy about her."
