Chapter Six: The Truth That Broke Her Again Amina’s heart pounded as Daniel stepped away from the window, his face suddenly tense. “They found me faster than I thought,” he muttered. Fear crept into her chest. “Daniel… what exactly are you involved in?” He ran a hand through his hair, clearly struggling. “It’s not something I chose. I was born into it. My family… they deal with powerful people—people who don’t forgive, people who don’t forget.” Amina shook her head slowly. “And you think I can just stand here and accept that? After everything you’ve already put me through?” “I’m not asking you to accept it,” he said. “I’m asking you to understand why I left.” Her eyes filled with tears. “You keep saying that like it makes it okay. Like it fixes the years I spent blaming myself.” “It doesn’t,” Daniel admitted. “And I hate myself for that every single day.” Silence fell between them, heavy and suffocating. Amina wiped her tears angrily. “Do you know what hurt the most? Not the fact that you left… but the fact that you didn’t trust me enough to tell me the truth.” Daniel’s voice softened. “I trusted you. I just didn’t trust what you would do with that truth. You would have stayed. You would have fought for me. And that would have put you directly in their path.” “And now?” she challenged. “Look around. They’re already here.” Daniel had no answer. That silence said everything. Amina let out a shaky breath, her emotions spiraling. “So what happens now? Do I just keep running for the rest of my life because I loved you?” “No,” Daniel said firmly, stepping closer. “Not this time.” She looked at him, searching his face. “This time,” he continued, “I’m ending it. For good. I won’t let them control my life anymore… and I won’t let them touch you.” Her heart tightened. “You make it sound so easy.” “It’s not,” he said. “There’s a price.” Amina’s voice dropped. “What kind of price?” Before he could answer, headlights flashed through the window. The car outside had stopped. Both of them froze. A slow knock echoed at the door. Not gentle this time. Demanding. Amina’s breath caught as she looked at Daniel. “This is it, isn’t it?” she whispered. Daniel nodded slightly, his jaw tightening. “Yes,” he said quietly. “This is where everything changes.”
