Whispering Flames
The night burned. Flames licked the walls like hungry serpents, devouring the only home he'd ever known. The boy's small hands trembled as he fumbled with the door latch, coughing through the thick black smoke that had formed so quickly like it has been waiting for just the slightest friction to flare up. He'd only wanted to warm his food – the same meal he'd been eating for two days straight, since nobody could be bothered with him. But just one spark from the stove, one careless click and now the air itself was fire. Everything he touched turned to pain. "Help!" he shouted, voice breaking and choking as he hastily made to open the door. "Mother—!" He called out and got no answer, only the crackle of wood and the increased roar of the blaze. The latch finally disengaged from the door frame, the door creaked open, and a rush of cold air brushed his face. He gasped, taking in the fresh air and stepping forward… when suddenly, a push slammed the door shut, throwing him back! He stood back immediately, rushing to the door and hammering on it aggressively but it wouldn't open. It has been locked from the outside. He heard light steps walking fast and farther away outside the door. "Hey! Hey! Who's there?! Open up I'm in here and about to get roasted to death!" "Mo– mother... Aunt Hadassah.. Butler Callen.. please... save me!" He cries out loud, welled up tears started dropping and his vision blurred. The smoke thickened, swallowing what was left of the room the fire extended into the other room and he couldn't breathe. The fire crept closer, it was only a matter of little time before the flames reached the living room and seal his seemingly inevitable fate. "Mama.. please!" He cried out more and horror painted his face as time ticked. “Mama... please.. come around!” he cried again, his voice shaking. Then a voice came from outside, sharp and cruel. “I hate you!” His heart stopped. That voice – Ahab, his half brother. “Ahab!” he called, choking. “Ahab, open up! Aren’t we brothers? Why are you still standing there? I’ll tell dad if you don’t help me out!” “Yeah, go ahead and tell him, that's if you make it out alive!” came Ahab's mocking reply. “I’m glad he won’t get to favor you anymore, saying you’re smarter while I’m the dumb one!” “Ahab, please! Your mother does the same to me, she takes Father’s money and buys you the toys and games you love while I get nothing!” “I don’t care!” Ahab’s voice cracked with twisted delight. “She’s my mother, so she’ll love me more! Go meet yours in the grave, loser! Your whole existence irritates me!” “Ahab, please! The fire–” “Goodbye, dear brother.” His laughter trailed away with his footsteps. More tears carved lonely streaks through the soot on his face as he slammed his shoulder into the door again and again. Nothing. He stumbled back, gasping. His world spinning. The fire was everywhere. Was this going to be his end? Fierce heat burned his skin. He quickly turned, running away from the door, he climbed unto a table near the window. Looking down from it, his stomach lurched – the height deeply scared him. It was a four-story drop, he would probably be dead before he even reached the ground. But as he looked back and realized that getting burnt won't be an option, the fire was nearly upon him. He decided to take the leap, readying himself, he held on tight to the window frame and lifted his right leg over when... He froze for a heartbeat, seeing a movement – a flicker of pure light beyond the flames. And.. the door suddenly burst open on it's own. Then, through the rush of wind and fire came a whisper, soft as breath, gentle as dawn – like the mysterious silence of the deep ocean and the ethereal beauty of the endless sky. He heard a surreal voice. "Run, Nite." ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ 💌 Hey readers 👋 Nue here! — this is my first book here on Dreame! Every story begins with a spark✨— this one, with a flame🔥.
