Episode 1: The Message - When The Boda Guy Warned Me And Rent Was Due In 3 Days
The rain was hitting the roof of my single room in Masajja like stones. Rent was due in 3 days. 100k. And I had 20k in my bag. My phone buzzed on the mattress. I didn’t even have credit to reply people. Unknown Number: "We see you with the boda guy. Stop talking to him." My hands started shaking so bad I almost dropped the phone. I stood up and looked out the small window. Across the muddy road, a boda was parked under the street light. James. He wasn’t even looking at my house. He was just sitting there, helmet on his lap. But somehow I knew he already saw the message. Because James hears everything. He dropped me off 2 hours ago from campus. I was with Brian in his car earlier, but Brian dropped me at the stage. James was waiting. On the ride home he kept looking at me through the mirror. "Be careful who you trust, boss lady," he said before I got off. I laughed it off. I thought he meant Brian. Brian, the campus guy with money and the nice car. The guy who texts me "I miss you baby" every night and buys me chips when he can. The guy who said he’d help with rent. But now this message. Before I could breathe, another message came in. Unknown Number: "Next time we won’t just send messages." Cold fear ran down my spine. I ran to the door and locked it twice. Then I checked the windows. My phone rang. Unknown number. My heart was pounding in my chest. I picked up with shaking fingers. A deep, calm voice said: "Don’t go outside. I’m coming." It was James. "How did you know?" I whispered. "I told you," he said. "I hear everything." The line went dead. And outside, the boda engine started. To Be Continued...
