The maintenance tunnels all looked the same down in the dark. Red walked with measured strides, her senses open to the sounds and smells as she moved between pools of light. Arto followed behind, his breathing ragged as the old man tried to keep up with her purposeful steps. “How do you know where you’re going?” He panted. Red paused at a junction, closing her eyes to let her ears work without distraction. She nodded to herself, turning right and walking away without an answer. “If you let me talk to him, I’m sure we could come to some arrangement—” “I have no time for that,” Red replied sharply. “Your king had a chance to talk. He wasted it.” Arto stumbled in the dark as she stopped again, sniffing the air to pick up the faint scent of bodies over the general murk of the tunnels.
