CHAPTER 001
CHAPTER 001 The elder’s words reverberated in Charlotte’s thoughts, steadfastly unwilling to fade. Only by taking a mate would she be able to ascend her father’s throne. She was to wed him first, and only after that could she be formally crowned Luna of the pack. Her eyelids rose, and she met her own gaze in the mirror. The makeup artist had worked wonders, and she stood in the most beautiful white gown she had ever laid eyes on. A tight knot coiled in her stomach. Today was her wedding day. Two years ago, her parents had died, leaving an ache in her heart and the pack without a leader. Though she was the pack’s eldest daughter, she could not be crowned until after she married. The elders maintained that it would bolster the pack. The previous year, at her twenty-first birthday ball under the full moon, the ritual to pair with her destined mate had taken place. She remembered standing in the corner, her pulse thundering, her gaze darting over the crowd. The scent invaded her—powerful, intoxicating, utterly unavoidable. She swept her eyes over the room again and again until they settled on him. Rising with a formidable presence, he emanated an aura that quickened her pulse. As he drew nearer, her mouth opened involuntarily, and her wolf’s purr stirred with pleasure. He slid his hand into hers and placed a kiss on the back, murmuring a lone word. “Mate.” Kael Fangton, the son of her father’s longtime ally Dirus—who had perished in battle—was his name. Through her research, Charlotte had come to appreciate Kael’s steadfast loyalty and formidable strength, and the elders were fully in favor of the union. Their hearts had met, and only the wedding remained. Stealing a stabilizing breath, Charlotte smiled, her heart skipping with anticipation. She was prepared to become Kael’s consort. He would stand beside her as her Alpha consort, all things falling into their proper order. A soft voice broke the silence, calling her name, and her thoughts leapt to attention. She turned and caught sight of her younger sister, Lylah, barreling toward her, her expression etched with concern. Are you really going to wed him? Lylah spoke sharply, her brow knitting as a frown pulled at her lips. Charlotte sighed. Not this again, Lylah. Kael is a good man, and I love him. I’m not talking about love. By that, I mean the elders. They are deceptive. You’ve only known Kael for a little over a year. "You don’t have to hurry this," Lylah insisted. Her seventeen-year-old stubbornness reared its head, and it was evident that she did not like Kael. "I’m aware the elders can be tricky, yet the Moon Goddess chose Kael for a purpose." He would stand at my side, Charlotte pronounced with unwavering certainty, closing any avenue for debate. She lowered her tone as she rested her hand on Lylah’s shoulder. Although events have moved swiftly, I cannot see the pack leaderless. Believe me. Lylah eventually gave a begrudging nod. Charlotte beamed and continued on past her sister toward the hall where the others awaited. Lady Charlotte Greystone, will you take Kael as your lifelong mate and husband, to share your side as you guide the Ravenwood pack, to guard and cherish him so long as the moon casts its light? Elder Rowan put the question. Charlotte’s throat was parched as she forced a swallow, but Kael’s hand caressed hers with delicate pressure. Her heart beat a wild flutter. I do, she breathed. Kael’s reply was firm. I do. Elder Rowan’s proclamation that they were now bound as both mates and leaders set the hall alight with cries of jubilation. Kael pressed a gentle kiss to Charlotte’s lips, binding their union. In the hours that followed, the chamber brimmed with blistering heat and sweat, their intimacy’s scent still clinging to the air. Pulling the duvet up around her, Charlotte shook with a chill, watching Kael dress. “You never marked me,” she whispered. “Do I have to?” he asked, the icy edge in his voice unmistakable. "You are my husband. "I’ve only just given you my body,” Charlotte murmured, her brow twisted in confusion. Kael gave a brittle laugh. What did you just say? Do you still not grasp it, Charlotte? Foolish, readily duped. The Moon Goddess made it easy by uniting us. Charlotte went rigid, her heart plunging. Was this some cruel jest? For years, my father waged war with his father—and in the end, he was betrayed. I watched your father sever his head for a crime he had never committed. I stood in the shadows, tears flowing,” Kael growled, his jaw tightening, his hand balling into a fist. And your father returned, lying that my father had perished in battle. What are you claiming? Charlotte murmured, dread slithering into her. Kael twisted into a cruel smile. You are well aware of who your father was. Beastly, merciless. Need I remind you? My father was no beast. You will never speak of him in that manner,” Charlotte hissed, her eyes ablaze. Every word that fell from Kael’s lips turned the knife in her heart. This pack demands a real leader. Those aren’t the words you would use,” he said, the frost in his tone impossible to miss. Without a warning, two guards burst in. Charlotte’s heart pounded frantically as she backed away. “What are you doing?” Her voice choked off as Kael whirled her about and pressed the dagger into her stomach. Bolts of agony exploded, brutal and blistering. I, Kael, son of Dirus, refuse you, Charlotte, daughter of Thane, as my mate,” he hissed, cruelly. Her wolf howled, maimed and terrified. “Concede it,” he snarled, his voice freezing and devoid of feeling. “No…” Charlotte drew a breath, her tears cascading. The dagger turned, razor-sharp steel ripping through her skin, and blood spread around her. The room was filled A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare is playfully written about the exploration of love, marriage, and the unrealistic expectations that can inexorably come along with them. This essay will examine how marriage is often portrayed as limiting and challenging, yet ultimately considered worthwhile. Commensurate with its origins in a court marriage, this drama speaks throughout for a sophisticated Renaissance philosophy of the nature of love in both its rational and irrational forms. This is illustrated by the fact that a significant disparity existed in the expectations placed on men and women. Hermia embodies this struggle as she defies her father, Egeus’s, wishes to marry Demetrius, showcasing her desire for autonomy and true love rather than merely fulfilling her duty to her society. Conversely, men are generally afforded a broader range of achievements and aspirations. They are encouraged to pursue careers, adventures, and personal accomplishments that can lead to social recognition and fulfillment. Demetrius, for instance, initially pursues Hermia out of a sense of entitlement, thinking he can claim her because that is what society expects of her. Another example is the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. Their relationship is rooted in conquest and power dynamics, which reflect the expectations of a hierarchical society. Theseus, as the Duke of Athens, represents a figure that signifies his authority, and his marriage to the conquered queen Hippolyta suggests that marriage can also be about control and possession rather than something more pure. with a thick, metallic stench that choked and suffocated. “I... accept your rejection,” she gagged, each word searing her tongue like a blaze. Kael pulled the dagger from her flesh. Charlotte collapsed, shuddering uncontrollably, her form saturated in blood. The poison-drenched blade blocked her wounds from closing, driving her wolf into hibernation. The pack requires a ruler of greater strength. "I had no other option," Kael said, his gaze stripped bare of compassion. He addressed the guards. Take her life and incinerate the corpse. Charlotte’s thoughts whirled in disbelief. How could the man she loved stand by to be her executioner? Her vision blurred, the world whirling around her, pain engulfed her entire being. Even so, a tiny ember still smoldered within her. At the fringes of her awareness, the pack’s survival, her life, and the reality of Kael’s betrayal spun in a chaotic dance. Who would endure through this night of betrayal? Even as the shadow closed around her, her final thought was one desperate question: Would she ever be able to break free from her own mate’s grasp?
