Chapter Two
Cara's POV
"Cara."
I rolled my eyes. What do they want now? I swear there's always something I need to do. It's like they're intentionally creating jobs for me. You know what, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. They hate me that much. According to them, I'm a burden, yet they still keep me here. How does that make sense? Beats me, that's for sure.
"Cara, get in here right now," the Principal all but shouted into the intercom. This is a normal occurrence in my everyday life, even the students are now accustomed to it at this point. She does know how an intercom works right, shouting isn't necessary. That's the whole point of it, good God. I quickly finished up with the dishes and once done made my way to the office, where I found the principal sitting stiffly behind her desk.
"Yes, miss." I patiently waited for her to start. Today we'll be expecting a special guest, and I want you to have dinner ready before they arrive. Today, I thought to myself. That's too short notice, how am I supposed to get everything done by dinner time? It's unbelievable, it's so like them to do this. I sighed inwardly, I didn't dare speak my mind. "The kitchen and dining room should be scrubbed clean and prepare only the best of the best for our guest. Do I make myself clear?" she finished off with a stern scowl, daring me to disobey.
"Crystal," I replied. Good, you may leave. We rarely get visitors, I mused to myself. I wonder who it could be, maybe, hopefully, it's someone who can save me from this hell of a place. Even so, I can't let curiosity get the best of me. Although I was curious about whom the important quest was, I can't allow myself to go there, I'm just an orphan slaving out in this hell of a place.
...
"Phew," finally done, I said, to no one in particular. After vigorously cleaning all morning and afternoon I can hopefully relax. I could really do with a hot dinner. Right on cue, my stomach let out a massive rumble.
I peered at the clock positioned on the wall, it read in 3:40. I still had some time before I had to prepare supper for the mysterious guest. All this talk of food is making me hungry and right;y so. I sneaked into the kitchen, cautious I didn't get caught. In the cupboard lay a pack of ores. I've had Oreos once before and it was an absolute delight, I never received any after that. It's been quite a while now. I wonder if it still tastes as wonderful as I remembered. Sneaking a pack of Oreos, I quickly placed it into the pouch of my maid-like uniform along with a cartoon of milkshakes - banana flavour, in case you were wondering - that I found in the fridge.
"What do you think you're doing?" came a haughty voice." I froze. Damn, I was caught, I thought I was in the clear. "Are you deaf or something, did you not hear me?" the voice replied again. Slowly, I turn on my heel, now facing her. I stared at her shocked, it was the principal's daughter. Great, just what I need.
"N...nothing Crissy, I wa-"
"Don't, said Chrissy, abruptly cutting me off, "you don't get to call me that. You're nothing. It's Christiane, only my friends get to call me Chrissy." I rolled my eyes at her condescending attitude.
"Anyways, I got to get ready, there's an important guest, and I've heard he's super handsome,' said Chrissy. I cringe at her horrible grammar. What are they teaching in this school, how to be stupid.' I tune Chrissy out, not caring about what she's going to wear, and so on, I really couldn't care less. Thankfully the majority of the girls here have brains filled with air and are absolutely full of themselves.
Chrissy long forgotten: I approached my room, welcoming the solitude.
...
"CARA NIGHTWOOD."
I jolted awake, the noise startling. I must have fallen asleep.
"CARRAA." Dang, that woman has got some pair of lungs. There's no need to shout though. Cara, came the voice again. Geez, no patience at all. I quickly made my way down the stairs, almost falling in the process.
"Why isn't the food prepared? The guest will be here soon, and you haven't even started," said the cook. I don't really know her name, she's rarely here, seeing as I'm made to do all the cooking. "Sorry, miss. I forgot. I'll tend to it right now."
"It should have been attended to. What are you waiting for, hurry on," said cook.
"Yes, cook," I replied. She just grunted and made her way to god knows where. My eyes trailed after here, wondering what the hell she's doing here if she doesn't even do her damn job.
I quickly got to work. I wasn't sure what I was going to prepare, so I went all out and did everything I could think of, everything.
Just as I was doing the finishing touches, the bell rang. I ignored it thinking someone would attend it.
