Coming Home
Rita was excited to be home. She was excited for the new adventures her homecoming promises.
Smiling happily to herself, she looked out of the window as the car drove through familiar streets and houses. Home was close by. The familiar warmth and comfort that she has missed in the last three years since she last came home was very close.
Her family was very close.
He was very close. Damon Feldman. She closed her eyes picturing his face in her head. His blue eyes looking at her happily as he pulls her into a bone crushing hug. His big shiny smile that shows her how happy he is to see her again.
Rita has imagined their reunion so many times. She has imagined revealing her feelings to him so many times and imagined him reciprocating her feelings with a kiss, so passionate that words need not be spoken.
Rita was indeed excited to be home.
The car stopped, making Rita to open her eyes. She was home. The front door of her parent's house opened and an excited Lucy ran out towards the car. She was wearing a powder blue dress, which complemented her skin and blonde hair perfectly.
Her outfit was in contrast to Rita's chic sweatpant and jacket which were perfect and comfortable for the long journey she just concluded.
Rita got out of the car just as Lucy reached her and pulled her into a hug. "You are here. I can't believe you are finally here," Lucy cried out excitedly.
Lucy started dragging her into the house leaving behind the driver who was getting her luggage out of the trunk of the car.
"Lucy, my bags," Rita cried out.
"He would bring them inside. I use his Uber service constantly. I know him," Lucy replied as she continued dragging Rita into the house.
Lucy was always like this when she is very excited. She was about two years younger than Rita but is still a child in so many ways. Her innocence and trusting nature sometimes tend to worry Rita who can be quite cynical sometimes, especially when it comes to people and what they are capable of.
There was loud burst of confetti as soon as Lucy and Rita entered the house. "Welcome Home" everyone shouted.
Rita laughed happily and looked at all the happy faces that gathered to welcome her back home.
Her mother, Franny, came to hug her. "Hope this is not too much," she asked as she kissed her daughter.
"It is perfect Mom," Rita replied happily.
After that, Rita lost count of the number of people she hugged, kissed, greeted and talked to.
She had greeted her dad, her brother, her friends and neighbours. Everyone except someone very important to her. Damon was not there. She remembered telling him that she was arriving that day so where was he?
She looked around and saw Lucy talking to another guest so she approached her. "Where is Damon? I can't find him anywhere."
"Oh, he had to be in court today so he couldn't make it for the party. But he would be here for dinner. He asked me to apologize for not being here to welcome you home."
Rita's face fell. Never in her imagination had she thought that he would not be waiting impatiently and excitedly for her to arrive. She had even imagined him receiving her at the airport with a bouquet of red roses to symbolize his love for her.
"Mom, I am feeling a little tired. I think I will lie down a bit before dinner," she said to her mother.
"Okay dear. Take a shower and rest. I would call you when it is time for dinner".
The party was already a bummer now that she knew Damon would not be in attendance. She was sad.
Her bags were sitting at the foot of her bed when she walked into her childhood room. The room looked almost exactly like she left it. Posters of models and fashion sketches were on the walls. Her old sewing machine was covered in one corner of the room.
She fell into the bed, staring at the ceiling. "I am home."
Water was dripping on her face. She sleepily wiped it off with her palm but it continued. She finally opened her eyes to see where the water was coming from only to see a tall figure looming over her.
"Damon," She shouted and sat up on her bed.
"Thought you wouldn't wake up. Welcome home sleepyhead. I have missed you so much. You have no idea how much".
Damon said as he hugged her tightly.
"I have missed you too." She pulled out of the hug and looked at him. "I need to tell you something."
"What is it?"
"Being away from you had made me realize how much I love and cherish you. I don't mean in friendship kind of love. I mean I am in love with you, Damon."
Damon looked at her for a little while, then put his hands on both sides of her face before placing his lips on hers. She kissed him back.
"I have always been in love with you and only you, Rita," he said as he continued kissing her.
A loud knock woke Rita up. She looked around her. She was the only one in the room. There was no Damon. There was no confession of true love. There was no passionate kiss that made her toes curl. It was all a dream.
The knock sounded again. "Rita, are you alive in there?" Lucy asked.
Rita dragged herself tiredly to the door and opened it. She turned around immediately to return to sleep.
"This has better be good."
"Yes, Rita is back. Did I tell you that you should never wake Rita up when she is sleeping?"
"Who are you talking to?"
"Me," Damon said.
Rita turned around excitedly and sees Damon standing right there looking as handsome as ever. She ran over to him and they both hugged each other excitedly.
Then she punched his arm.
"What was that for?" Damon exclaimed as he rubbed his arm.
"For not being on the welcoming committee".
"It wasn't my fault. I had to be in court today. I am sorry. Don't worry I will make it up to you".
"How?"
"Emmmm," he looked at Lucy. "Help me out here," he said to her.
"No darling. You are on your own."
"Anything you want you will get. That would be my punishment," he finally said.
"Anything. Like anything at all," Rita said mischievously.
"I think it would be in your best interest to rephrase that babe," Lucy said.
"Anything that is a reasonable request, I mean. Nothing outrageous or mischievous. Remember I am a Prosecutor now."
"Relax. I am not going to ask you to commit a crime. I am a law abiding citizen if you must know," Rita replied. "Is the party over?"
"Yes and dinner is ready," Lucy replied.
Rita stood up. "Good I am hungry."
Damon and Lucy look at each other nervously.
"Damon and I need to tell you something really important before we go downstairs," Lucy said.
Rita looked at the two of them, puzzled. Lucy and Damon coming to talk to her as a unit was something that never happened before she travelled. They spoke casually whenever they saw each other but that was it. One would not even call them friends.
"What is it you want to talk to me about?"
"We were waiting for you to get back in order to break the news to you," Damon said. He started biting his lips showing that he was extremely nervous.
"We are engaged," Lucy said excitedly as she showed Rita her ring.
The latter was motionless. She was in shock. She could not believe what she was hearing. Lucy and Damon were engaged. Damon. Her Damon was engaged to her younger sister.
"Congratulations," she managed to mutter.
"I knew you would be happy for us. Damon was worried you would be angry about him dating your younger sister but I told him that you would be very happy for us. We want you to be our Best-Person on our wedding day."
