Chapter Eighteen

Kat POV

"I distinctly remember when he said 'Amarok is the name I gave when I started slaughtering their kind. It means wolf hunter.' And i remember John called him Erikson."

"Okay, so it says in Amarok's file or Erikson's file that there was an attack at his residence that resulted in his wife Bethany and son Elliott being murdered. Hold on, the night they were murdered..John and Erikson showed up at the station together. That's the same day the wolf that killed John's wife was found dead." Chris says.

"Wait, he was a wolf?"

"Yes, not just any wolf. An Alpha. He lost his Luna and when a Luna dies, it makes the Alpha go crazy. Somewhat savage." I looked at Kat and she fell silent.

"So what? Was it like a killing pack between the two? But why attack the Solace family?" Gia asked

"You know, why don't you ask the hunter. He's the one in the middle of all this right?" Asher states.

I looked over at Chris and Mason. "Guys, I think you need to take me back."

"What?!" They both say in unison

"Asher is right. The only way we are going to know what happened is to ask the only person involved. And that's my dad." I say sadly.

"Alright, but I'm not leaving you." Chris says

"Neither am I." Agreed Mason

I sighed. "Okay then it's settled. Let's head back there tomorrow morning and see what he has to say."

THE NEXT MORNING

After dropping Asher and Gia off, we headed back to see my dad. Even though I feel betrayed and lied to, I have nobody else I can call my family. And I needed answers.

John POV

Sitting at the kitchen table with Leila. I felt defeated. I didn't know what to do. She was gone and I had no way of knowing where she would be.

"John, we have to go out and look for her. What if she's in danger or if she hurts someone?!"

"I don't know where she could've gone Leila!" I yell putting my head down in defeat. "Anything I could've done to make things right by her it's too late!!" Tears came to my eyes.

"You could start with telling me the truth." I looked up and see Kat standing in the kitchen with the two wolves that entered her life. She looked so fragile but looking into her eyes I saw a strength I'd never known before.

"Kat! Your back!!" I stood up and wanted to hug her but she backed away.

"No, I'm not back. I'm not staying John. I'm only here for answers she said coldly. I wouldn't let her know how much that broke me.

"Okay, what do you want to know?" I said with my hands up in surrender.

"How about starting from the beginning." Chris says

I walked to the island in the middle of the kitchen and sat on the stool. Leila, Kat and the wolves did the same. I sighed and began to tell her my truth. "I had a wife, Lily. She was so beautiful. We were in love and wanted children. Lily decided to do a home delivery, so when it came time for the baby.." I trailed off thinking about that day with tears rimming my eyes. I cleared my throat and continued. "Our daughter died. She didn't make it and we were both devastated. It took Lily months to grieve and I decided one day to take her out on a date, dinner and a movie. We were walking home late then a man came out of nowhere and knocked me down. I must've lost consciousness for a while because when I came to, my Lily was gone. He killed her." I said with bitterness in my voice.

I looked at Kat and she sat across from me with tears running down her face. I looked away. "I went to a friend of mine from my firm. Just talking it out, you know what happened to Lily. He said he had a friend in the police department that could give me the details on what happened to her, how she died."

"Erikson." The other wolf boy says.

I nod. "I don't know how but they found the man who had killed her. Erikson came to me days later and said to go with him to confront the man, so I did. It was one of your kind, a wolf." I spat at Chris and the other boy. It made the other boy take a step forward. "Mason, no." Kat says to him.

"We went and killed him. I thought, it would make me feel better but it made me feel empty." Leila put her hand over mine and gave a sympathetic smile. "That night, when we were off killing that wolf, another wolf was at Erikson's killing his wife and son. I don't know why but they did. Erikson blamed me for it. Said he was supposed-"

“ 'Supposed to be home, with MY family! Instead I left to help you ! Leaving my family defenseless!! So really..this is your fault. I may hate their kind for what they are and what they've done, but you owe me your life.'" I looked up at Kat who looked confused as she spat the words that Erikson said to me all those years ago.

"Yes, but how did you..." I trailed off and sighed. I knew how she could've known. "Your nightmare?" I asked with sadness. She nodded slowly. "Yes, he blamed me and told me I owed him. So we found the wolf responsible, killed it. I thought that was the end of it but Erikson was obsessed with the kill. Turns out he had been doing this a long time before my wife. The wolf that killed his family went back for revenge. I was stuck ever since.

Then one night, we end up in Redmond. He had more than a dozen men with him including me. He slaughtered everyone. Except the two of the house. He made them witness the death of their daughter, your sister." I said looking at Kat. She stayed looking at me. Chris took her hand. He placed a file next to her. She looked at him as he opened it and took out some pictures. " Your father and mother are alive." Chris says to her. I shifted in my seat as her eyes flew to me wide eyed.

"Its true, Erikson wanted them to stay alive to live through the agony of losing a child. The thing is, he didn't know your parents had two daughters."

"This is your sister, Ava. Your mother and father, your Alpha and Luna. And this..is you." He placed three pictures in front of Kat. "Your name is Kiana Solace. Born from Alpha Dimitri and Luna Kaya Solace. Younger sister of Ava Solace, deceased 12 years. This, Kiana is who you are." She stared at the picture of herself. Tears falling but no sound coming from her til she looked at me.

"Why? What made me so different?! Why did you take me John?!" She questioned me angrily

"While Erikson, who called himself Amarok..was beating on your parents almost half to death..I saw you. You were hiding but I seen you. I know nobody else had so I kept quiet. When Erikson left the room, I followed. I was trying to come up with a way to get you out without anyone seeing. So I drugged you with chloroform." I said with a wince. "I saw you and..I knew if Erikson found out about you he'd kill you anyways.

I watched as your father begged you to leave. And I saw how frightened you were. So I planned to take you, when I caught you and drugged you, I had to make your father believe I had killed you so he wouldn't look. So I pointed the gun and shot at the ground to make him think you were dead. When I looked over at your father he had passed out. I assumed it was from the beating and the wolfsbane Erikson used to keep him weak." I sighed and ran my hand over my face.

"I didn't plan on keeping you. I was going to adopt you out to a nice family, in case your father figured it out that you were alive. Erikson found out, what I had done and how I saved a child from the home and he came after me. But I was long gone..and I had taken you with me because I couldn't live in a world not knowing you were safe. Its what I would've wanted for my daughter. I'm sorry Katherine..I mean Kiana." I said pain stricken.

"So explain to me why you trained me?" Kiana says

"I went on the run, I trained you so if Erikson ever caught up to us. I knew he'd kill me and attempt to kill you but your one of them. Your a wolf and much stronger. I knew you might be able to stop him."

"Your telling me your weren't running from her family?" Chris asked with a furrowed brow.

"Of course not. I was going to take her back once I knew she would be safe but when I heard Erikson was looking for me I had to assume he'd found out. I didn't wish the loss of a child on anyone. But I want to make things right." I looked to Kiana, "I'm so sorry I hurt you, that I didn't care for you the way I should've. I was just so focused on you being ready for a fight I didn't realize you had your own fight within yourself. I don't know how to care for a wolf or the process of your change that's why I called Leila. She's the one whose been helping us move around, who knows and befriended some wolves so she knew more than me." I look at my sister who was quiet the whole time.

"What did you mean when you said 'He'll come for her'?" Mason asked

"Erikson never stopped looking for me. He wants her, I don't know why. But I've heard that he's been k********g werewolves to turn them..against their own kind. Experimenting on them at a facility and changing their genetics so that they go savage."

Chris and Mason looked at each other wide eyed. "We have to tell my father. Where is this facility?"

"It's here in Portland."
