Chapter 1: Mine. Finally, Mine.
Festival Square.
Irala huddled in the farthest corner of the crowd, fingers digging into the hem of her dress, head bowed low. The air was thick with evening primrose sweetness mixed with the heated musk of werewolf pheromones, making her chest tight and breathing difficult.
Her eyes drifted unwillingly toward the platform.
Cade.
He stood bathed in moonlight, silver beams outlining broad shoulders and narrow waist, muscles straining against his ceremonial robes. Golden eyes cut like ice as they swept over his frenzied pack below.
A pure-blooded Alpha like him—born to lead—deserved the noblest Omega as his Luna. What was she? Half-breed, with pheromones so faint they were barely detectable. The possibility of bearing children was likely just a fantasy.
She wasn't worthy. She didn't even deserve to look at him.
Forcing her gaze down, she stared at her worn shoes. Yet her senses betrayed her, catching his scent on the breeze.
Cedar. Hard. Cold. Charged with the restlessness of a coming storm.
Just the smell made her knees weak.
"Moon Goddess above, grant us our strongest leader!"
The Elder's voice suddenly exploded, piercing and loud, making her ears ring.
Every werewolf in the square instantly dropped to their knees, heads bowed in reverence. Irala knelt too, forehead pressed against the cold stone, heart pounding painfully in her chest.
The moonlight suddenly intensified, blinding, as a beam shot down from the heavens to engulf the platform.
Cade slowly raised his head, standing in the column of light. His golden gaze, sharp as a blade, methodically scanned the crowd.
Irala trembled, instinctively burying her head deeper.
Don't look at me. Please, don't see me.
But his gaze locked onto her with deadly precision.
BOOM!
High-voltage electricity crashed through her body from head to toe. A foreign, dominating presence flooded her senses. Numbness and exquisite pleasure exploded simultaneously, shooting straight into her brain.
"Ah..."
A moan escaped her lips despite her efforts to contain it. Her legs gave out, her body collapsing forward, nearly face-planting.
Cedar and storm pheromones instantly descended, aggressively invading her nostrils, enveloping her completely.
Dead silence fell over the crowd.
Irala trembled uncontrollably, her vision narrowed to those golden eyes. They burned with naked, wild possession.
In the next second, the figure on the platform moved.
He leaped!
"THUD!"
The heavy landing shook everyone's heartbeat. Irala's breath caught. The crowd gasped, parting around her.
Cade approached step by step, each footfall making Irala's breathing more labored. His gaze pinned her down, raw with predatory hunger and desire.
Irala melted against the ground, mind blank, mouth open in shallow pants.
He was coming. He was coming for her.
Moon Goddess... was this real?
A scorching hand seized her arm with bone-crushing force. She was yanked up roughly, crashing into his rock-hard chest. Cedar and storm pheromones wrapped around her, dominating every inch of her skin.
"She is my Luna."
Cade's voice wasn't loud, but it exploded in everyone's ears. Holding her tight, he announced it to the world.
Her mind went blank, joy and disbelief hitting her so hard she couldn't breathe.
He chose me?He chose ME!
He lowered his head, hot breath fanning her ear as his growl vibrated against her eardrum.
"Mine. Finally, mine, my mate."
His voice was hoarse, trembling with barely contained emotion.
"You're finally mine."
Irala shuddered violently, terrified by the intensity of his possession.
"Alpha..." Her voice was unrecognizable, shaking with tears. "I'm... I'm not worthy of you..."
"Shut up."
Cade gritted his teeth, arms tightening, veins standing out. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply, drawing in her essence.
"You are my Luna, my only one," his raspy voice branded against her skin, each word a burning imprint. "Anyone who says you're unworthy, I'll tear them apart."
Without hesitation, he lowered his head, fangs piercing the softest skin of her neck.
"Mmph!"
Slight pain mixed with spreading heat, her heart pounding wildly, nearly bursting through her throat.
Pain. But accompanied by exquisite, trembling pleasure radiating throughout her body.
His mark. On her skin.
Irala clutched his sleeve, melting in his embrace.
Whispers from the crowd reached her ears.
"How can it be her? A mixed-blood..."" Has he lost his mind? Why would the Alpha choose her as Luna?""I heard she has a defect... she can never give the Alpha an heir."
Unable to bear children...
The four words crashed into her heart. Her body, burning hot moments ago, had now turned cold.
"Alpha!"
The Elder rushed over, face ashen with suppressed fury. He grabbed Cade's arm, trying to pull him away.
"Do you understand what you're doing?!"
Cade slowly raised his head, golden eyes swirling with terrifying red light as he licked the remnants of blood from his lips.
"I understand perfectly."
The Elder's gaze cut across Irala, his disgust and coldness turning her limbs to ice. He yanked Cade aside, lowering his voice, yet every word reached Irala's ears clearly.
"Her bloodline... has a fatal flaw."
Fatal flaw...
Irala's heart stopped. Those rumors... were true.
"Alpha, have you lost your mind? Will you destroy our pack's future with a defective Omega?"" Have you forgotten how her mother died?"" The medical report arrives tomorrow. The evidence will be irrefutable. Are you prepared to banish her yourself, or will you simply kill her?"
Destroy her...
Darkness clouded Irala's vision, her wild joy and sweetness instantly vanishing, her heart too painful to breathe.
Cade stood with his back to her, shoulders rigid, motionless.
"Medical report?"
Irala grabbed Cade's arm, nails digging into his skin, her voice trembling with desperate force:
"Tell me... is this true?"
Cade's back remained stiff, unmoving.
Silence.
Her breath stopped.
